Static
Let me tell you what it isn't, and then I show you why it's wrong. Then we debate. The American dream is to own a house with an acre of green grass and scattered trees, have a loving and loyal spouse, and raise your kids to have character, to be decent, drug-free human beings so that they can succeed and be well liked. It involves working hard, you have to earn it by working a job that probably doesn't pay enough because you think you deserve more for your work. It involves spending family time together, on vacation, holiday, and at the dinner table, and going to Church or Cynagogue or Mosque or Temple or wherever your faith is represented. This is not what it is anymore. What is the American dream? The American dream is playing out Darwinism. It is trying to get as much as you can, so that you feel you amount to something, so that you feel you are successful and important. It is working for your company rather than living for your own enjoyment, just so that you can amount to that little bit more. It is being stubborn on issues of ethic so that people think you have strong opinion's and a strong will. It is a facade we have to put over other people to say "I am something, and I am something more when compared to him, or her, or any of those people there simply because of what I have done or accomplished and how much I was payed for it." A dream is the desire to become something, in innocence. A dream of greed is no longer a dream, but a lust. As far as I'm concerned, The American "Dream" is long dead, along with civil decency and living for the sake of living and just being chill with what is, rather than what can be. Now, we debate. 「tea.leaf」
Actually... Here's my dream: I want to own a condo in some dense city (preferably New York, or Tokyo, Beijing might work too, maybe Rome), with an extended porch that faces north or south, so that I can enjoy sunrise AND sunset when I eat. I'd like to have pleasant neighbors, the good kind that cook food for each other, watch each others' kids, have barbecues, that sort of thing. Of course, I want a decent job, with a hefty pay (financial welfare first, above all else, that's what I say). I hope my wife (or husband, if that's what ends up happening; I'll keep my options open) will be loyal, dedicated, beautiful and just as logical as I am. At some point I will adopt a daughter (regardless of my spouse's gender, and like hell I'm going to go through labor), and I raise her to be absolutely wonderful; beautiful, smart and deadly, just in case anyone tries to feel her up or something. There, not very American, but I could care less; I'm not American.

CrabHelmet
The American Dream is to be overvalued: to be seen (and paid) as being worth more than one truly is. That is why the American Dream conflicts directly with fairness or morality or whatever you wish to call it.
