And the chances are noticeably higher than the failure of the LHC. Only emo's would say "Oh yeah, there is about 0.00000000001% chance we're going down, so we're doomed!" 2012 is, in my eyes, a far larger issue. Maybe they thought they knew for sure that the world will be alive until that point, and decided to extend the calender at a later point. Us a a planet will cross to the other side of the galaxy. some people think that this will make the earth rotate in the opposite direction, making the crust shift and causing major changes in temperature that will lead to the extermination of the human race. others, like me, say that it will be just another day, and nothing will happen. if all else fails, i hope that my house gets shoved to where Hawaii is. It's getting smaller (Very unnoticeable, but it is getting smaller) each year. In billions of years, the sun will eventually burn all the way down to it's core, which will then explode. The Earth will then be plagued with massive heat energy from the explosion, and then be cursed with an eternal winter. BTW, I love Jesus and Jesus loves me. Christians RULE!!!!!
