The Makings of a Good Leader

Not about YCM anymore; taking this to a grand scale.

The question: What makes a good leader?

That's what we will be discussing here today.

I have some ideas to put forth:

  • 1. Intelligent: Knowledge is power.
    2. Levelheaded: Calm and sensible.
    3. Logical: Acts with the mind rather than the heart.
    4. Resilient: Takes a beating and bounces right back.
    5. Critical: Not only of others, but also of themselves, to be self-correcting.
    6. Responsible: Deliver upon promises and resolutions.
    7. Receptive: Take criticism in a positive light and communicates with the people.
    8. Decisive: Must be able to make sound decisions in a prompt manner.
    9. Selfless: Put the needs of the people ahead of the needs of their own.
    10. Charismatic: Image is just as important as skill.
    11. Confident: Show no uncertainty and weakness.
    12. Secretive: Let known only what must be known.

Please don't just use generic terms like "responsible"; use specific adjectives, and state why it's a valuable attribute.

And if your society chooses heart over logic? You must understand that to a deep degree as well. But know when to shut it down...

#4 is something I will agree with till the day I die.

You cannot list the characteristics of a good leader, without setting the group that person leads to a certain default.

Meaning, what make one person a good leader for one group, does not mean that he/she would be a good leader for another group.

So ask yourself, what group do you belong in?

^: I believe that she was going for a good base on Generality.

It is true that different groups need a specific sort of leader. But there is at least a skeleton to start from...

Both have the same characteristics if you think about it.

Political and military leaders have very different traits necessary. Political leaders need to be diplomatic and convince both the people and other political leaders to support them. Military leaders need to bark orders loudly. >_> There are several traits in common, like intelligence, but others, like charisma, aren't always so universal.

Basically, picture a presidential candidate speaking like a drill sergeant.

To know and better ones-self.

To be responsible.

Give credit where credit is due.

Know those who work under you and what they are capable of, then have them do what they are capable of and just enough more to give them a challenge.

good with time-management.

and there's a bunch others, I'm just drawing a complete blank right now because my mind is in 8 different places right now.

You need one more thing, Wisdom. Without wisdom, everything is useless. Wisdom teaches to be careful, try your best, always be friendly to one another, and all those things. Without wisdom, what would life be like? You should think about it. And all leaders have at least a little wisdom.
