FROM LONDON, ROME AND PARISTO BERLIN AND TOKYOWINTER NEVER REALLY STARTSUNTIL IT'S GIVEN ITS FIRST SNOW AS HE FLEW OVER THE URALSHE CAME UPON A LITTLE TOWNSHINING IN THE ARCTIC DARKNESSSO THE ANGEL HE SET DOWN THEN HE WALKED AMONG THE PEOPLEIN A FITTING EARTH DISGUISESO NO ONE RECOGNIZED HIMTHOUGH THEY WONDERED AT HIS EYES THEN HE ASKED A VILLAGE PEASANTWHAT DO RUSSIAN HEARTS DESIREHE ANSWERED PEACE ON EARTH, OF COURSEAND A LITTLE, "STOLICHNAYA" In the middle of a forestThere's a clearing by a streamWhere a mother holds her newbornAnd the child begins to dream And he dreams of hopes unspokenWhen the tears of man will ceaseAnd his mother holds him closerFor he is the Prince of peace Let the bells ring out these tidingsLet it echo across the landThat a king is born in BethlehemAnd his kingdom is at hand Let the world rejoice togetherAs it looks upon the starsKnowing every man's our brotherAnd that every child is ours Hark, the herald angels singGlory to the newborn kingPeace on earth and mercy mildGod and sinners reconciledGlory all ye nations riseJoin the triumph of the skies With the heavenly host proclaimChrist is born in BethlehemHark, the herald angels singGlory to the newborn king In the middle of a forestThere's a clearing by a streamWhere a mother holds her newbornAnd the child begins to dream AS HE FLEW O'ER SARAJEVOTHERE WERE SCARS UPON THE LANDTHERE WERE SCARS UPON THE PEOPLEIT WAS HARD TO UNDERSTAND AND THE DEEPEST SCARS OF ALLWHICH TO HUMANS ARE UNSEENBUT THE ANGEL COULD SEE CLEARLYWERE THE SCARS UPON THE DREAMS LIKE BELFAST AND BURUNDIRWANDA, PALESTINETHE ONLY DECORATIONS HEREHAD BEEN AWARDED FOR THEIR CRIMES AND IN THE GARDENS WHERE THE CHILDREN PLAYEDNOW SOLDIERS ONLY TRODAND STRANGER STILL, HE HEARD SOME SAYTHAT THEY WERE KILLING FOR THEIR GOD NOW THE ANGEL HEARD GOD SPEAK MANY TIMESAND HE HAD ALWAYS PAID ATTENTIONBUT THIS KILLING OF ONES NEIGHBORWAS SOMETHING THE LORD HAD NEVER MENTIONED BUT AS HE NEARED THE EARTHOF A RECENT BATTLEGROUNDFROM AMONG THE RUINSHE ONCE MORE HEARD THE SOUND IT WAS A SINGLE CELLO PLAYINGA FORGOTTEN CHRISTMAS SONGAND EVEN ON THAT BATTLEFIELDTHE SONG SOMEHOW BELONGED AND AS HE FLEW AWAYTHE ANGEL DID TAKE NOTETHAT WHERE HE FOUND MUSIC PLAYEDONE ALWAYS COULD FIND HOPE AS HE FLEW OVER THE COUNTRYSIDEHE WAS STILL LISTENINGWHEN FROM A LITTLE CHURCH BELOWHE HEARD A VOICE BEGIN TO SING Joy to the worldThe Lord has comeLet earthReceive her king Now it was long agoWhen it all beganBack in BethlehemIn the promised land When a single starAppeared in the skyAnd three kings sawAnd they each asked whyAsked why... And they checked the booksFull of prophecyAnd the one king saidWhy it's plain to me You see it meansThat a king is bornWho will save mankindOn this blessed mornBlessed morn... So they packed some goldMyrrh and frankincenseOn some old camelWith some fancy tents Closed down the houseSet the servants freeAnd three kings rodeInto historyHistory... It was long agoIn a foreign landWhen the Lord looked downSaid to make a standSo He sent His sonAnd said, 'through him you'll know me!'You'll know me Then the angels cameAnd when they start to singAll at once the past It doesn't mean a thingAnd the star comes outAnd the wise men say, Hey show me!Oh, show me And they followed itOver hills and sandTil' they found the childLike it all was plannedAnd as they knelt beforeThe newborn king The angel's were singingIn their angel styleHow all of our hopesHad come down to this child THEN HE REACHED FOR THE SONGAND HE HELD IT IN HIS HAND(IT WAS SOMETHING THAT HE DIDBECAUSE ANGELS CAN) AND HE WONDERED TO HIMSELF"IT THIS THE ANSWER THAT I SOUGHT"BUT SOMETHING WAS STILL MISSINGOR AT LEAST SO HE STILL THOUGHT AND SO HE JOURNEYED ONTHROUGH THE MIDNIGHT WINTER AIRWHEN ALL AT ONCE OUR ANGELFELT THE TOUCH OF A MAN'S PRAYER AND LOOKING ONCE MORE TO THE EARTHTO DETERMINE WHENCE IT CAMEHE FELT A MILLION SOULS BELOWBUT ONE WAS NOT THE SAME FOR THERE HE SAW A MAN ALONETHOUGH HE WAS WALKING IN A CROWDAND THOUGH THIS MAN HAD RARELY PRAYEDTONIGHT HIS HEAD WAS BOWED FOR EVEN IN A CROWD, YOU SEEA HEART CAN FEEL ALONEWHEN THE NIGHT IS CHRISTMAS EVEA CHILD IS NOT AT HOME SO FROM A FATHER TO THE LORDA PRAYER DID SWIFTLY RACEBUT THE ANGEL SAW IT FIRSTAND HE LISTENED TO ITS CASE There is an ornamentLost inside the nightThere on a Christmas treeWith a thousand lights No one can see herShe's standing all alone Somewhere she glistens where no one can see I don't believe I can say what had happenedAll of those words that we put into playNo longer matter, I should have known that thenI just know you're far away On this Christmas dayOn this Christmas dayOn this Christmas... Somewhere the windCarves moments in the snow And if he sees herHe never lets it showHe just drifts behind herErasing every step Tinsel and garland are whispered through trees I don't believe I can say what had happenedAll of those words that we put into playNo longer matter, I should have known that thenI just know you're far away On this Christmas dayOn this Christmas dayOn this Christmas... Come, ChristmasStay, ChristmasWatch over her this dayKeep herProtect herFrom harm now in every way Shelter herGentlyThere in your arms she'll beUntil the dayWhen youBring her back home to me There is an ornament lost inside the night AFTER HE HAD HEARD THE PRAYERTHE ANGEL GENTLY SET IT FREEAND FOLLOWED IT TO THE FATHER'S CHILDIN A FAR AWAY CITY AND THERE THE GIRL IN DESPERATIONWAS SEARCHING THROUGH THE SKYFOR A STAR THAT SHE COULD WISH UPONBUT STARS WERE IN SHORT SUPPLY AND THE ONLY LIGHT THAT SHE COULD SEETHERE SHINING ALL ALONEWAS A NEON SIGN ON AN OLD BARAND SO ON THIS, SHE WISHED SHE WAS HOME EVERY LIGHT CAN BE A STARJUST DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU AREAND THE DISTANCE THAT YOU'RE LOOKINGPAST THE PLACES YOU HAVE BEEN In an old city barThat is never too farFrom the places that gatherThe dreams that have been In the safety of nightWith its old neon lightIt beckons to strangersAnd they always come in And the snow it was fallingThe neon was callingThe music was lowAnd the nightChristmas Eve And here was the dangerThat even with strangersInside of this nightIt's easier to believe Then the door opened wideAnd a child came insideThat no one in the barHad seen there before And he asked did we knowThat outside in the snowThat someone was lostStanding outside our door Then the bartender gazedThrough the smoke and the hazeThrough the window and iceTo a corner streetlight Where standing aloneBy a broken pay phoneWas a girl the child saidCould no longer get home And the snow it was fallingThe neon was callingThe bartender turnedAnd said, not that I careBut how would you know this? The child said I've noticedIf one could be homeThey'd be all ready there Then the bartender came out from behind the barAnd in all of his life he was never that farAnd he did something else that he thought no one sawWhen he took all the cash from the register draw Then he followed the child to the girl cross the streetAnd we watched from the bar as they started to speakThen he called for a cab and he said J.F.K.Put the girl in the cab and the cab drove awayAnd we saw in his handThat the cash was all goneFrom the light that she had wished upon If you want to arrange itThis world you can change itIf we could somehow make thisChristmas thing last By helping a neighborOr even a strangerAnd to know who needs helpYou need only just ask Then he looked for the childBut the child wasn't thereJust the wind and the snowWaltzing dreams through the air So he walked back insideSomehow different I thinkFor the rest of the nightNo one paid for a drink And the cynics will sayThat some neighborhood kidWandered in on some bumsIn the world where they hid But they weren't thereSo they couldn't seeBy an old neon starOn that night, Christmas Eve When the snow it was fallingThe neon was callingAnd in case you should wonderIn case you should care Why we're on our ownNever went homeOn that night of all nightsWe were already there THEN ALL AT ONCE INSIDE THAT NIGHTHE SAW IT ALL SO CLEARTHE ANSWER THAT HE SOUGHT SO LONGHAD ALWAYS BEEN SO NEAR IT'S EVERY GIFT THAT SOMEONE GIVESEXPECTING NOTHING BACKIT'S EVERY KINDNESS THAT WE DOEACH SIMPLE LITTLE ACT Christmas timeOn a cold December morningAll is calmAnd the world is still asleepChristmas lightsThat have been caught without warningGently glitter onStars to wish uponAll the world is at peace Christmas time and the year will soon be leavingCloaked in time till it's just a memoryChristmas stays if we don't forget its meaningDays go quickly byYears they multiplyAnd we go searching for thee And the dream is still aliveFrom that first December morningAnd it always will surviveAs long as we can seeThat the dreams we find in lifeAre the dreams we tend to seekAnd Christmas has its promises to keep Christmas timeAnd the moments just beginningFrom last nightWhen we'd wished upon a star If our kindnessThis day is just pretendingIf we pretend long enoughNever giving upIt just might be who we are AND SO IT'S GOOD THAT WE REMEMBERJUST AS SOON AS WE'VE DISCOVEREDTHAT THE THINGS WE DO IN LIFEWILL ALWAYS END UP TOUCHING OTHERS SO FROM A FADING NEON STARSOMEWHERE SHINING IN THE NIGHTWE FIND A FATHER FAR AWAYNOW REFLECTING IN ITS LIGHT So, tell me ChristmasAre we wiseTo believe in things we never seeAre prayers just wishes in disguiseAnd are these wishes being granted meFor now I seeThe answeringTo every prayer I've prayed She's coming home thisChristmas Day So tell me ChristmasAre we kindMore this day than any other dayOr is it only in our mindAnd must it leave when you have gone awayIt's different nowIt's changed somehowAnd now you're here to stay She's coming home thisChristmas Day All at once the worldIt doesn't seem the sameAnd in a single nightYou know it all has changedAnd everything is now as it should be I have the ornamentI have the perfect treeI have a string of lightsI have a chance to seeEverything that my heart thought could be For of all the dreamsYou were the first I knewAnd every other oneWas a charade of youYou stayed close when I was far away In the darkest nightYou always were the starYou always took us inNo matter who we areAnd so she's coming home thisChristmas Day [1.]Merry ChristmasMerry, merry ChristmasMerry ChristmasMerry, merry ChristmasMerry ChristmasMerry, merry ChristmasNight (add the second stanza in the third time) [2.]She's coming homeShe's coming homeShe's coming homeThis Christmas Day [All together]She's coming home thisChristmas Day... SO THE GIRL HAD REACHED HER HOMEAND THE BAR WAS CLOSING DOWNAS THE ANGEL STARTED BACKTO BRING HIS LORD WHAT HE HAD FOUND An angel returnedThat night through the skyBut time it was shortHe had to decide And so as he flewBack over the landA gift for his LordWas there in his hand It was the glow of a lightIt was the heart of a songIt was the tear of a childWhere they never belongedIt was the wish of a soulOn an old neon lightAnd the Lord smiled at himOn that cold winter night Hear as they ring through the nightKyrie among nationsKyrie among nationsKyrie among nationsHere the bells ring through the night Kyrie among nationsKyrie among nationsKyrie among nationsHear as they ring through the night Kyrie among nationsKyrie among nationsKyrie among nationsHear as they ring through the night Listen to the bells as they ringListen to the message they bringListen to the soundAs they sing as one voice in the night Hoping that we'll all understandEvery dream we have's in our handsAnd for every bellMay they ring all through the night Kyrie among nationsKyrie among nationsKyrie among nationsHear as they ring through the night Kyrie among nationsKyrie among nationsKyrie among nationsHere as they ring through the night Listen to the bells as they ringListen to the message they bringListen to the sound as they singAs one voice in the night Hoping that we'll all understandEvery dream we have's in our handsAnd for every bellMay they ring all through your life AND SO WITH HIS STORY OVERAND OUR BOTTLE NEARLY THROUGHI ASKED, DID THIS REALLY HAPPEN?HE SWORE EVERY WORD WAS TRUE THEN HE SAID I SEE YOU'RE PUZZLEDFOR YOUR MIND TELLS YOU TO DOUBT METHAT MY STORY CAN'T BE TRUEBUT YOUR HEART TELLS YOU, IT MIGHT BE HE THEN ASKED, DID IT ENTERTAIN MEAND I ADMITTED IT HAD CHARMTHEN HE SAID PERHAPS YOU HEAVE LEARNED SOMETHINGOR AT WORST I'VE DONE NO HARM THEN HE ROSE UP FROM HIS CHAIRAND HE SAID IT'S TIME THAT HE SHOULD LEAVEBYT MAY GOD KEEP AND PROTECT YOUTHIS AND EVERY CHRISTMAS EVE THEN HE LEFT THROUGH THE FRONT DOORAND I RAN OUT TO ASK HIM BACKBUT HE WAS ALREADY GONEAND STRANGER STILL HE LEFT NO TRACKS SO I WALKED BACK TO MY HOMERECALLING ALL I'VE HEARD AND SEENAND FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE MY CHILDHOODTHAT NIGHT I DREAMED A CHRISTMAS DREAM MERRY CHRISTMAS!
