Bloodrun
I might as well get some of your guys opinions, if I truely want my paper to be adverse enough to tell both sides of the story. Basically, what part of Speech should "Freedom of Speech" entitle us to? Basically, what would be classified as bad language, and what would be classified as within the context of the law? When I say bad language I mean like, "you dirty jew" stuff like that. Now, right now, people are argueing over the fact that if the Speech specifically targets one person and or puts someone in physical danger, then it is against the law. But, if it doesn't target just one person, but a whole group, then its fine. Now, I partially agree with these two statements, but only on the side that physical danger would only bring uprise to riots. And, on the side that each group of people need to be told what they're doing wrong, so they can see how they can change for the better. Brushfire
I personally believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, including any racist or harmful remarks. If it goes as far as just pure insulting, then I completely disagree. That's just my two cents.

Otherwise, in response to the topic that was brought up, it's because people have had some words ingrown some words into their brains, and have associated them with emotions, both positive and negative. Jericho
Free speech should mean you can say anything any time without being prosecuted for it. It doesn't matter if they offend people. The freaking government needs to stop punnishing people for offending people. If they can't take it, they should move to mexico. Screw them. The Dark One
There's a balance to be struck. I think that people have the right to believe what they want, and to express their views to others. It's wrong to illegalize the KKK or prevent them from being heard. (Although we can prevent them from committing violent acts.) However, there is such a thing as a reasonable restriction on Free Speech. For example, it is illegal to call fire in a theatre, due to the riotous behavior that can ensue.I think this can be linked to hate speech. Perhaps it is a violation of the rights of the individual when taken too far. If most kids in a school take every chance they can get to make fun of a black person who attends that school, they are restricting that person's right to the Pursuit of Happiness. Obviously, the black person can technically move to a different school, but I think that there comes a point where it isn't unreasonable for the government to set down certain regulations on the extent to which Hate Speech can go. Of course, I strongly believe in people's right to express their beliefs, regardless of the ridiculousness of the beliefs that they hold. If any government restriction became strong enough to keep a white person from making it explicitly clear that he thinks blacks aren't human, it's too much. If any restriction prevents the white person from trying to change the law to make slavery legal again, it's too much.
