christmas feeling minus the belief

I LOVE Christmas, yet I'm not a Christian and I simply love it because of the atmosphere and the fact of giving and getting presents. It's a way to unite people you maybe haven't seen for a longer time and that's always nice.

If I think about it, most people don't have the Christian myth in mind anymore when they celebrate Christmas, but it has rather become a tradition to celebrate with your family or friends, a chance to get some presents or maybe only an excuse to decorate the house.;) That's what I like about it too, plus the baking. Then of course there is also the commercial aspect.:P

I celebrate christmas for two reasons even though I am atheist:

1- My mom thinks I am christian

2- Gifts

Christmas compared to the other celebrations is okay, but I don't really like it.

To me, Christmas is a holiday where you give and receive presents and unite with your family, no religious connotations what so ever.

The origins of Christmas may have been religious, but we make of it what we will and it was commercialised a long time a go.

half the kids I've seen near my school think the only purpose of christmas is for them to get everything they desire

I for one am Catholic, and I like the religious connotation of Christmas (which is the basis of the holiday to begin with).

Midnight Service is a beautiful celebration, even for myself, who tend to find the common Mass a bit boring.

Then there's having the whole family together, which is a very rare occurrence in ours. I also love buying presents for some friends in particular.

Overall... Christmas is a nice excuse to be happy for a change. ;)

What does this Christian stuff have to do with the Pagan holiday for the birth of the Sun God?:P

But seriously, Christmas isn't even Jesus' real birthday so there really isn't much of a religious connection for most people. Besides, it's basically a commercial holiday nowadays what with Santa being worshipped like God and all.

My family isn't Christian, but we celebrate it anyways just for the togetherness.

Well, now that I find out that my parents are going away for X-Mas this year, (they going to Hawaii to supposedly excape the snow which has not fallen yet) and leaving me behind with my two bros. I'll just say "Screw them" and go hang with my girlfriend, so that then I can be in a giving mood. :) I never once believed in Santa Clause, because my parents told me from the start. :| So I never understood why people really leave cookies out for a something to behold, like a lobster huge and red, when really it's just the people in their lives that act as their guardians. So, if you look up your chimney for a man who carries bulging sacks with big great arms, I'm gonna start asking some question like "WTF are fantisizing about?"

^what group of pagans do u hang with?

It was originally a Pagan holiday to celebrate the birth of the Sun God.

Jesus' birthday, September 19 (Or somewhere around there), at that time usually wasn't celebrated but more often a time for more work. In an attempt to attract more to the Christian faith, the church moved the celebration of Jesus' birthday to December 25 in order to coincide with the Pagan holiday and make it easier and more comfortable for Pagans to convert.

The 25th of December coincides with the conclusion of a Roman Temple built in honour of the Sun's rebirth. I forget which emperor was around back then, we didn't talk much.

Still, yes, the date was hand-picked for convenience. ;)
