In the distance future, an interstellar mining ship belonging to Concordance Extraction Corporation (C.E.C.) sends a distress call back to Earth after unearthing an ancient alien artifact while mining for ore on other planets. As a result, C.E.C. sends rescue teams to the ship, which is called the USG Ishimura, and assume its just a mechanical failure in the ship. However, upon arriving at the ship, they find it is more than just some sort of mechanical failure.

 

The ship's crew are horribly mutilated, and a polymorphic alien virus known as 'Corruption' has swept through the ship. This also turned the crew into creatures called 'Necromorphs', which are grotesque alien creatures. They produce more numbers by infecting the crew's mutilated bodies and violently turn them into one of their owns.

 

The rescue teams aboard USG Ishimura scour the ship fighting Corruption and Necromorphs while trying to extract the valuable cargo, ore, and the alien artifact. Tey also conduct searches for any survivors. They don't want to leave without the cargo, ore, or alien artifact, and they want to find a smany survivors as they can.

 

The rescue teams from C.E.C. eventually activate a Distress Beacon, which attracts a military vessel called the USG Valor. Unfortunately, Ishimaru isn't the only ship infected because Valor is to. This means every ship in a certain radius of the alien artifact is infected by Corruption as well.
