"The twelve birth stones, yes," said Chancellor Sheppard, nodding slightly. "Each student took one stone for themself, and immediately felt a change. As it happened, the stones were twinned with a Chinese Zodiac which varied according to the person in question. Each student discovered he or she could perform a power related to their Zodiac.

"With the twelve stones, they researched more and found there were originally thirteen. They figured out somebody must have taken the thirteenth gem, and guessed it was within the possession of the evil student. The group left mid-way through the term and set off to put an end to the evil one.

"With the protection of the gems, the students duelled the evil one and finally managed to defeat him. Rather than be sent to the Shadow Realm, the thirteenth gem protected him and he became nothing more than a spirit to be trapped inside the thirteenth gem, an onyx. Now that their enemy was defeated, the students tried to return all thirteen gems to the temple. The temple, however, rejected the gems. It turned out all thirteen gems had to be clensed of any evil before they could be returned.

"Left with no choice the students hid all thirteen gems through any means possible. Peace lasted for a very long time. I don't know whether any of you have been reading the news lately but countless duellists have been sent to the Shadow Realm. This means the thirteenth gem has been found - and indeed unleashed - by someone. The other twelve gems are still securely hidden; however, now we reach the snag.

"Only the selected twelve can find and unleash their gem's power. You see these duel disks you have? Miss Jade, may I borrow yours?" Jade nodded and handed her disk over. Chancellor Sheppard pushed down with his thumb near the Life Points counter. At once a small surface collapsed in to reveal a small compartment big enough to hold a gem. It wasn't terribly big. "Once you have your gem, you can place them inside this slot; that way you will never loose it.

"Any questions?"

"I made those entrance exams for a purpose," answered Sheppard. "I wanted to see your skills, and it seems I was right in thinking you twelve can do it. You see, to the untrained eye, you may seem ordinary but if you know where to look you will discover you exceed others.

"As for the gems, I'm afraid no one knows. The students kept their locations a secret. They could be anywhere - the students didn't necessarily just grab a shovel and hide them. And no, you're forbidden to get a digger and dig up the whole grounds. Rest assured, you will find these gems when the time is right. According to reliable sources, the gems will naturally call out for their rightful masters."
