What do you think about Linux in the big three.

Now please, allow me to explain myself. I believe linux has grown exceptionally among people in the past 3-4 years, for those of you that know of linux, it is probably because of the popularity increase due to the face of linux "ubuntu" Becoming so simple to use. More people then ever are using it for its obvious benefits. Being stable, Easy to use,Virus free [to a great extent], and best of all Everything having to do with the operating system is free, software, the OS itself, ETC. Because of the WIN-Emulator, better known as the WINE binary layer compatibility, it has support of alot of windows applications, mind you not all of them. But a very good bit. With all of these great things, in the crashing economy, larger companies [such as the one im working at at the moment..just got the job :3] are moving over to linux, Its free, so they save a good bit of money not having to update windows to often, ubuntu comes with all of the software they need built in already or available for download. And the fact they dont have to invest money in anti virus deals is great as well. I think linux is benefiting from people becoming cheap lol So within the next 3 years i see linux becoming a serious threat in Microsofts eyes, and within that time the amount of linux users doubling atleast.

The reason its mainly virus free is because so few people have Linix that its not worth the time to infect their computers.

Well' date=' theres is also the fact that it doesn't have binary dos executables running. Far more secure...

Its linux btw >_>. Not linix.

And really there isn't much a virus could do to lock up a Linux kernel, seeing as though its open source the community will always be updating security exploits...and it being open source also gives you full control over your system, including kernel builds..etc, so alas, anything that did "infect" your linux couldnt do much as you could easily remove it with an $SU killall -virus location here- --purge [that being a rough explanation mind you']

@Kizzi, Hey, good to know that this thread helped you. What are these windows programs you speak of, list them :)

WINE Is Not an Emulator! ._.

Anyway' date=' this thread has reminded me to update my copy to Jaunty Jackalope (ie. 9.04).

My problem with Linux is the massive number of Windows programs I completely rely upon. D=

Story of my life.

I can't get Warcraft to run on Linux because of the lack of Direct-X (and I put in like 2 hours messing with Config.wtf and it still never worked), and youtube is god awfully slow on Linux.

I have 4/5 of my HD partitioned to Linux but I never use it because it's inconvenient. :(

For what it can do though, it's really good, and the layout is nice once you get used to it.

Open GL was what I was trying to work with. I open WoW and I get the sound just fine, but the background for the login page doesn't toggle. It's either black or it doesn't change from whatever was there before. I tried inserting the codes that some guide described to me in every which possible combination and it was all to no avail.

env WINEPREFIX="/home/-name here-/.wine" wine "C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Wow.exe" --opengl

Make that a launcher assuming wow is found in its normal directory then while in wow enable hardware. thats all it takes.

Adobe PS/Illustrator/Flash/etc CS4

HL2, The Sims 3, etc

Google Chrome and Opera

MS Paint (why can't WINE even get this to work? >_>)

Probably some other things that I can't think of right now.

WOW OK here

There is a linux version of google chrome and a linux version of opera.

Screenshot-27.png

GOOGLE CHROME: http://tinyurl.com/mhkwgq

HL2 works on wine no problem. Actually most steam games to, and recently steam has been adding unix based libs to there games for compatibility in linux.

Here is a pic, of me playing death match...same base system really. i've played the full halflife 2 series on linux...good game @_@;

HL2: http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l274/XxSydenxX/wwwwwwwwwww.png

I have sims3 working on linux with minimal issues...

Hell i even play Devil may cry 4 on linux XD

Sims 3: http://x43.xanga.com/8c9f441618235245938911/b194988804.png

If you are looking for games on linux, I suggest using playonlinux....they have really nice install scripts that allow you to play high end games..like the new prince of Persia...dead space...the goodies :D

PLAYONLINUX: http://www.playonlinux.com/en/

I use Adobe photoshop on linux, through wine, since gimp is really basic in comparison. illustrator has been known to work with some DLL's placed in system32..

As for flash i honestly dont know that one..

Proof that cs4 works on linux: http://appdb.winehq.org/appimage.php?iId=21074

As for illustrator, its not all there yet on wine...-shrugs- but there are really great alternatives.

Alternatives To Illustrator:

http://www.xaraxtreme.org/

http://www.inkscape.org/ [the one i use personally]

http://www.skencil.org/

CS3 Flash works bro!

CS3 FLASH HERE: http://appdb.winehq.org/appimage.php?iId=16487

These are all the alternatives to MS paint....they have the same functions and more...mspaint has some very sketchy dos code running through it that wine cant seem to comprehend. But its been known to work on certain systems.

I have WoW on my Windows in the normal directory but I don't want it there since my Windows Partition is small (I made it that way so I could switch over, but I never figured out WoW)

Maybe if I change the directory in that to run the Directory from the Linux partition that will work.

But first i need to ask a stupid question. Is a Launcher basically an Icon?

Yes basically....you could additionally run it through terminal if i am not mistaken.

Make sure you have the proper GPU driver for linux etc...and do as i said..it works for 99% of these bugs for wow.

This is going to make me look like an idiot: I'm running a dodgy 64-bit version of Ubuntu, which was the root of half my compatibility problems, and the main reason for me wanting to upgrade. >_____>

Google Chrome & Opera I'd never looked into, because while I used Ubuntu I was half content with Firefox, despite the 64-bit add-on compatibility.

Regardless, I'm pretty shocked that you could actually get HL2 and PS working well. In PS were all the functions working right, and in HL2 what sort of settings and framerate can you get it on?

Anyway, with regards to Illustrator and the rest of CS4, I can see them being pretty important in the long run. Since I don't think there's any alternatives to Flash and similar, I think I'm gonna be screwed there.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge though.

PS. It's quarter past 4 in the morning. If I've posted something stupid like "Under Linux XP switching to Windows is would be great" then just ignore me.

Kizzi, you aren't stupid. Ypu're what we like to call in the linux community a "Beginner User" Who didn't really educate himself on it well, i was that way once to.

Now in regards to all of this.

Ubuntu 64 bit, a while back had lack of compatibility for alot. To be honest The kernel ubuntu uses, utilizes a swap ram and channel system which really eliminates the "need" for 64 bit computing. You can install ubuntu x86 on your 64 bit processor, be it AMD, or INTEL. Half life two got 56 frames per second on all low settings, but you have to remember. I am using a Equivalent to a pentium 3 processor, with VERY little ram, and terrible integrated graphics. And im still able to play wow at full speed...and hell even left 4 dead. I haven't ran into a features on photo shop that made wine stall up..id say it works about 100%

In my experience I will say that Illustrator is something that is COMPLETELY over rated, its like an application i could script in visual basic 6 4 years go.

With Inkscape i get all of illustrators compatibility and more. All in All, Illustrator is lacking in comparison...you should try it out, the windows version first of course. it's free after all ^.^

And i do have a little update, though CS4 flash doesn't work on wine yet because of some raw wine incompatibilities...

CS3 flash works JUUUUUUST fine.

CS3 FLASH HERE: http://appdb.winehq.org/appimage.php?iId=16487

^^^^^^^^^Mind you, it will look alot better on your computer, as you wont be running it on a wine desktop. Simply on x11. And it works well with the latest version of wine...tested it just this morning for yah.

Can you get Wubi working on WINE?

In other words:

Yo dawg I herd you like Linux dawg so I put Linux on your Linux so you can fully customize your OS while you fully customize your OS

Yes actually' date=' but its kind of fail because, while booting from grub the first time..you see windows..you boot windows...which boots grub..which boots wubi, which complicates things and makes wubi look like...

well...
