Music Videos = Art [Discuss Here!!!!] [Playlist Added]

lets be honest, music videos are nothing but commercials to promote bands, songs or anything of that nature. But ever so rarely, I've seen music videos that struck me as wonderfully crafted and well executed, to the point that it makes me believe that the artist actually cares for what he/she/they are putting out there. I want to list some music videos that, to me, were visually creative and just plain mesmerizing to watch.

to read my personal comments, click on the "Spoiler".

Nine Inch Nails - Closer
Dir: Mark Romanek
[posting clean version, but its still very unsettling.]
this video is creepy, disturbing, explicit, controversial, and wonderful. Trent Reznor was very right, it is one of the few videos were the song sounded better. the sight of a monkey on a cross, Reznor tied up doing...God knows what, the grotesque spinning pig, and lots of other weird images.

Mark Romanek, the director of the video, couldn't have said it better.
"you know what, lets go all out with it, and if MTV wont play it, then f**k MTV".
Placebo - Pure Morning
Dir: Nick Gordon
visually, the whole video is amazing. the protagonist (Brian Molko) looks like he's high as a kite (more ways than one, cosidering he's about to jump from a very tall building). Two things that strucked me in the video is the dull blue-ish lighting, and everybody's expression in the video, they portray suspense for the viewer.
Beck - Where It's At
Dir: Steven Hanft
Weird Video. Is one of those videos that keep you watching, because you don't know whats going to happen next. Beck's has always been creative and this is my favorite video by him, no matter how many times you watch it, the song and the video never get boring.

You guys have to watch it yourself, I can't really discribe it.

"That song doesn't normally last 2 hours, but we had a serious thing going. Then I forgot how it ended."
Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box
Dir: Anton Corbijn
by far my all time favorite video. the images, colors and the intensity captured both, the beauty and the ugliness of the song. its a shame that Kurt and the band had to go before they could reach their creative peak. this video just shows how much ambition the band had.
OutKast - B.O.B.
Director: Dave Meyers
monkeys, ridiculous hydraulics, strippers and funky churches. what more could you want? great song, great video, 'nuff said. you have to watch it yourself, it never gets boring, its a fun and quirky video.
Marilyn Manson - The Dope Show
Dir: Paul Haunter
a tribute to 70's glam rock (David Bowie, T.Rex), Manson's Dope Show takes it the "androgynous rock star alien" to a whole new level. The thing that mainly attracts me to this vid (besides Manson's rubber t**s) is the dull, vintage looking colors through out the whole thing.
is a very surrealistic type of video, and shows what marketers are willing to promote. this video is an eye opener for sure.
Metallica - The Memory Remains
Dir: Paul Anderson
one of Metallica's more elaborate vids. it is a very impressive video too, if you consider that no GCI was used.
Minutemen - This Ain't No Picnic
you want a video with a message? this one's it (and sticks it far up your a**). to think that MTV played this back in the day. nowdays, videos like this would never fly. this probably one of my favorite music video of all time, and my one my favorite songs by the Minutemen.

its simple, yet effective.
Jack's Mannequin - Swim
Dir: Emilio Martinez
the music in this video, is the kind that saves you. a beautiful video as well
Kid Cudi - Make Her Say
Dir: Nez Khammal

Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings
Dir: Samuel Bayer
by far, the most impressive Smashing Pumpkins video. really defines the 90's very well.
so, discuss your favorite music video here. (if you want, post a link)
and please give a short description of why you like it!

I made a playlist with you guy's suggestions. the playlist can be found right here!

if you guys wanna add anything, please let me know. also, if you guys can come up with a discription or better title, that would be great too!
(because I'm really bad at that)

rules? only one video per artist, because I want to give it more variety. the only one that gets passed this is Michael Jackson, because he was just that awesome (and because he was the pioneer of the elaborate music video. that should be reason enough).

enjoy :D (I urge you to watch the playlist in "Random Mode", to get a unique broadcasting experience)

We made a better music channel than MTV.

The music section of the forums should really get more attention.

The best music video I have ever seen is Micheal Jackson's "Thriller". Plays out more like a short film than a music video. I was really impressed.

*high fives*

that video totally re-defined what a music video had to be. that it can be something more than a "commercial"

Try LEECH by the GazettE. It's well crafted/artsy and stuff. Good song too.

Just watched it' date=' that was awsome. the video was very creative as well.

Putting links up for the videos you guys suggested, so other people can watch them.

Michael Jackson - Thriller

LEECH - the GazettE

I'm a big fan of Kanye West, but to me, thats one of my least favorite videos by him. Hype Williams is one of my favorite directors, and the visuals are great, but they are not anything "fantastic". My favorite video by him is the Chris Milk-Directed "Jesus Walks".

as you can tell by the post, I do like Marilyn Manson, but between "DTeens" and "Beautiful People", the one that sticks out is "The Beautiful People"...great f***ing video.

^ well. Technically it was a music vid right? =\
yea, I see your point, but it wasn't created to promote something.
I wish it was though, because then, they wouldn't had to do...this.

"the horror, the horror!"

I'm sorry, I'm a horrible, horrible person. :(

Coma White - Marilyn Manson

Lets see you hate that video. God like video is God like.

I don't hate it at all! I think I mentioned to you that Mechanical Animals is my favorite Manson album.

its kind of hard to choose, The Dope Show vs Coma White. visually I think The Dope Show is great, but Coma White has a very powerful message you rarely see in videos.

Manson videos are usually sending a message. Coma White' date=' Dispoasable teens are two good examples.

[/quote']

I've seen vids by him that I love, and some vids by him that I don't care for, Like "(s)AINT", I don't really like the video, and I'm not too crazy about the song either.
