KNOW YOUR KINGS - A short guide of Monarchs

*BE REMINDED THAT THIS GUIDE IS STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION*

Monarchs. One of the least supported archetypes. But the support is not needed, they are enough for themselves.

This guide will teach about them.

[spoiler=Chapter I: Monarchs? What are monarchs?]

Monarchs are Level 6 monsters with 2400 ATK, 1000 DEF and an effect that ignites when Tribute Summoned. The only exception is Zaborg the Thunder Monarch, which is a Level 5.

There are good monarchs, there are bad monarchs. Here's an analysis for all of them:

CaiustheShadowMonarchGLD2-EN-GUR-LE.jpg

One of the best monarchs, if not the best. It removes a monster, which counters many strategies and also inflicts 1000 damage if it's a DARK. It could even remove something you control just to give the damage to your opponent. A must run.

GranmargtheRockMonarchGLD2-EN-C-LE.jpg

A no-run Monarch. It can destroy a Set spell card, but there is Mobius for that. It could destroy a face-down monster, but that effect is obsolete, due to the aggresive way the game is played.

KuraztheLightMonarchLODT-EN-SR-LE.jpg

A monarch that is good in it's own builds. Could be used as a draw engine, or just a destroyer. Or perhaps a trump in a sick Greed Deck.

MobiustheFrostMonarchGLD2-EN-C-LE.jpg

A nice s/t clearer. Run 1-2, depending on the build. But definetly keep some.

RaizatheStormMonarchGLD2-EN-GUR-LE.jpg

Another must-run monarch, goes good next to Caius. It could be used to clear your opponent's monster card zone for a final attack, it could be used to delay the opponent's strategies, break a combo, etc.

ThestalostheFirestormMonarchGLD2-EN-C-LE.jpg

Another usable monarch, it at least discards, and does slight burn damage. Could be run next to Caius, or something else, according to the build.

ZaborgtheThunderMonarchGLD2-EN-C-LE.jpg

It was a good monarch before, but got quickly obsoleted by Caius. Another no-run.

So, what we learned here is which monarch should be ran, and which should not be run.

A pretty generic Monarch deck should include:

2-3 Caius

1-2 Raiza (or 3, because they're getting unlimited)

1-2 Mobius

1-2 Thestalos

[spoiler=Chapter 2: Obtaining Monarchs]

Building a Monarch deck is pretty easy if you're in Japan, because they have the Structure Deck: Advent of the Emperor, which has a copy of all monarchs except Kuraz. Instead, we have The Dark Emperor, which gives a nice stepping stone to a Macro Monarch deck, and also holds a Caius inside.

Gold Series 2 too, has all monarchs, except Kuraz.

To get Kuraz, get a Light of Destruction Special Edition pack, where you'll have a %50 chance of getting one.

The Dark Emperor also carries a Caius, along with some good material to build a Macro Monarch.

I am not mentioning the older packs, it'll be hard to find them there.

Also, try buying them through internet. That's something I can't do.

[spoiler=Chapter 3: Monarch Support]

Monarchs do not have their own support, which is their only lack, but you can find pretty good support around.

All monarchs usually need for their aggressive playstyle is Tribute Fodder, recycleable at best, and they're done with it.

Here are some support:

D.D. Survivor/Scout Plane + Macro Cosmos: D.D. Survivor and D.D. Scout Plane return to the field when removed from play. D.D. Scout Plane is weaker, must be summoned in Attack Position, but is less restricted, and returns when sent from anyway. D.D. Survivor is more restricted though, and will only return if it was sent from the field, when face-up. Macro Cosmos is the best way to keep removing these cards to make good Tribute Fodder. The con is that this won't work with most other fodder techniques. Because of this, Macro Monarch is a singular decktype, and we'll get to that later.

Treeborn Frog/Samsara Lotus: Both keep coming back over and over again if there are no Spells or Traps, but Samsara Lotus decreases your Life Points. But it is also unlimited, and helps. Treeborn Frog, is limited but is also costless, so it should be ran, if the deck is not Macro Monarch, they will be removed from play, and if not even that, MC is a continuous, and will block their return.

Samsara Kaiser: This one comes quickly with Structure Deck: The Dark Emperor, but the fact that it returns to your hand just wastes your turn. And it most probably won't stand, so, no.

Tokens: Yes, yes, Tokens. It's easier to handle than recycling, and there are more choices. Look for Dandylion, Fiend's Sanctuary, Goka, the Pyre of Malice is a good option, it gives a freebie token at the start of your turn, and can stand for a while. Stray Lambs is an option, Scapegoat is not.

Quick Special Summoning: Cyber Dragon, Vice Dragon, and Gilasaurus are good for a quicky tribute. Gilasaurus doesn't have to revive a monster for your opponent if used right, and perhaps it is a risk you'll have to take for a monarch. Cyber Dragon and Vice Dragon have that same thing that Treeborn/Lotus has, Vice is unlimited, but is weaker, and Cyber Dragon can hold on on it's own even if there are no monarchs, so Vice is a little bit too conditional and might end up clogging up your deck.

Trap Monsters: A bad and obsolete idea. If you will do it, do Metal Reflect Slime.

Indestructables: Spirit Reaper, Marshmallon, Arcana Force 0: The Fool. Marshmallon is a staple in any monarch. Spirit Reaper is easier to get, but can turn it's back on you. The Fool is quite splashable too.

The Spells and Traps: Double Summon, Chain Summoning, etc. is nice, but once again, can clog up your deck. Soul Exchange and Brain Control is also nice and annoying to your opponent. Run a few. Ultimate Offering is also useful.

Other: GET A DRAW ENGINE! Monarchs can get pretty clogged up.

[spoiler=Chapter 4: Monarch Decks]

NOTE: I'm still working on this part, I'd love it if you sent different deck types and decklists. (and perhaps get a rep)

Hope I helped.

That's a lazy cop out. Either have a guide ready and do it right the first time, or don't bother trying to fish for reps like all the other jackasses that try a guide.

Here's an analysis for all of them:

Do you even know what the word "analysis" means? Because all you did was list them, MAYBE regurgitate their effects, and then made a coin flip decision on whether they were "good" or "bad", not based on any of the arguments you posed.

Obtaining Monarchs

You missed the Water Structure Deck and the Fire Structure deck, which have commons of the obvious monarchs.

Monarch Decks

Nowadays, Monarchs work best individually, as tech in other decks, not as one big assault thing. The meta's too fast for monarchs now.

You mentioned Samsara Kaiser, but not Black Ptera?

2 Mobius? You can't be serious >_>

1 Mobius is fine, but Breaker is getting unlimited, why bother?

Mashmallon, Arcana Force 0 - The Fool and Spirit Reaper aren't staples. And Spirit Reaper's self-destruct effect usually helps out.

You need to explain why Trap Monsters are bad in Monarch decks. By simply typing "LOL THERE BAD DONT RUN THEM" isn't giving any explanation why people shouldn't run them. Same goes for "GET A DRAW ENGINE!" part. Explain what kind of Draw engines there are and why you should use these.

And why isn't the GK Spy engine mentioned in this? It makes an excellent Tribute Fodders since it thins the decks, so you can draw into your Monarchs faster.

Goka? Stray Lambs? Double Summon? Chain Summoning? Are you insane?
