1 On 1 Championships Round 1:

Xander draws first blood.

[spoiler= Match 3, Round 1- sephiran1 vs Xander Royce]

sephiran1:

When your opponent Normal Summons a monster, you can Special Summon this card from your hand and equip it to the Summoned monster. Your opponent cannot Normal Summon any monsters as long as this card remains on the field. When the monster this card is equipped to attacks, it loses 800 ATK at the end of the Damage Step. If this card is removed from the field, destroy the equipped monster and Special Summon this card. If a monster equipped with this card is destroyed by battle and your opponent controls another face-up monster, you can equip it with this card.

Xander Royce:

When this card is Tribute Summoned, decrease the ATK of all face-up monsters on your opponent's side of the field by 500 for every card in your hand OR increase the ATK of this card by 500 for every card in your hand. When this card destroys a monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard, add 1 Spellcaster-Type monster from your Deck to your hand.

Result: Xander Royce : 4, sephiran1 : 2.

My analysis (A compilation of what a lot of judges said):

A good showing from sephiran1, to take two points from Xander Royce, a well known, and well respected card maker. Of course, Xander is a bit rusty. The OCG is fairly old, in both cards, there are a few errors, but that is of little importance.

Sephiran1's is a lockdown on Monster Summons, where as Xander's is a self mill (really it's not, but I was generous there).

However, this breaks down into balance of the card. I'm a good contest host, and here is the key. Lockdown usually wants IGNITION, and Mill usually wants TRIGGER. Because a trigger effect usually balances the mill, and an ignition effect will balance the lockdown. (But this point is debatable.)

Sephiran1's card bears resemblance to Necrofear, but it used the TRIGGER requirement effect to Special Summon itself, because of the trigger, and a very crippling effect, coupled with the fact it is difficult to get rid of, spelt disaster.

Xander's card is much easier to get rid of, and thus brought a good victory to him. His picture was also slightly better, which may have been the deciding factor in some cases. Of course his card was very situational, which may have discouraged some judges to vote him.
