A democracy is when people vote.

Demo is latin for people.

Cracy is latin for... government.

The people's government.

People rule it. Thus, people vote.

So, if I went to a democratic country, and I said "Let's take a vote on whether we should take a vote on healthcare issues.", I'd be a dictator in their democracy.

They'd have to take a vote to take the vote. But they'd need to vote for that too. And that too. And that too. Oh, they need to vote for that. And that too. As well as this. Ad infinitum.

Yeah.

Simply what I was saying is that a democracy cannot be what its meaning is, as a dictator must dictate to the people that a vote is in order.

Ah okay I see. Brief confusion on my part, sorry. Of course a democracy isn't what it's meaning leads us to believe. It's all twisted by the government.

I assume this has something to do with the board and the staff. If this is not the case, skip the spoiler below.

This board is far far too massive in size to ever properly do anything with a "poll" and with "voting". If every voice mattered, not only would we see a crapton of multis, but we'd see all the 9 year olds with -12 reps who've made hundreds of elemental hero cards show up to vote to elect for some ridiculous sheet. Yeah, no thanks.

Uhh... so like, yeah.

Nothing' date=' really.

I guess I'm trying to prove that democracies don't exactly exist?

The last true democracy was in Athens, wasn't it? ^^

So democracies haven't existed since at least then :P

No, we use a representative democracy because with are large population it would be chaotic and overly time consuming. So, we elect representatives to vote on/create laws and all the other gov. duties.

@The First Post: In a democracy anyone can propose a vote in congress. You view of the concept is misunderstood and slightly uneducated. Proposing a vote isn't dictatorship. Despotism (Dictatorship) occurs when someone has all the power. By proposing a vote or a bill you are still equal to the other congress members because they have the same right. Also, the horrid spelling in the title does nothing for your credibility.

Your from Greece too? We're family :D

And she is half correct. Athens is credited for the invention of Democracy, but that was 3000 years ago.

There is one major flaw in our government. (US)

Legistlative = Good

Judicial = Good

Executive = Flawed.

What if the person we vote to power is not capable of his duties.

Impeach? America is too lazy for that.

Instead of one; three.

One democrat.

One republican.

One... all the rest.

It makes everyone happy.

Every one of three has equal power than the other.

I solvded sum problmz.

Why democracy is good...because its not! In a Democracy, EVERYONE has to vote on EVERYTHING! which makes it FAIL! two famous quotes on Democracy:

"Democracy is two wolves and a sheep trying to figure out whats for dinner"

-Denjamin Franklin (I think)

"Democracy is little more than a chaotic mob of 100 people in which 51 of those people can easily and legally take away all rights of the other 49"

-Thomas Jefferson (I think...)

Now think about it, to defend themselves, everyone has to cast a vote to go to war or not. I'm Joe the Farmer, do I have time to read every bill that needs a vote? no. In a monarchy, of any kind, except Britain's fail Slowly-becoming-Fascist Parliamentary Monarchy, all the ruler has to do is say "Attack them" and it happens. how much time does that save?

to sum it up:

Democracy=Fail

Monarchy=Win

in that same logic with monarchy, one person can legally take away the rights of the other million or so

yeah, the one-person-going-power-mad kind of monarchy was tried at one point: it ended in the Magna Carta. However, in a Democracy, since its the 51-49 thing, that wouldn't happen, because the 51 people would say "I vote 'no'" then thats that. nothing. pointless. waste of time.

William the Conquerer, Louis XIV, oh, who was the first absolute Monarch of France, the one who took the flawed non-monarchy France DID have before him, gain more and more power, and then made it an effective government? can't remember his name, I took, and passed, US History after that...

so a cruel ruler who killed everything who opposed him is better than getting nothing accomplished? -.-

At the very least it's not a complete waste of time.

PS: The only reason the French Ab. Mon. failed is because Louis XVI was a weak ruler who didn't know what he was doing, if Louis XVI had selected someone who was competent as a ruler, France would probably still have the Ab. Mon. government. The same with every Ab. Mon. the has failed: the only reason it failed was because the succession from father-son puts an incompetent on the throne.

democracy makes no sense. We should all be under a dictatorship [/topic]

The first post did not ask for your view on democracy' date=' nor did it ask for an alternative. So why have a [/topic'] tag when you aren't even referring to the topic at hand?

Maybe I am misunderstanding what a democracy is, but I think that it is when everyone in a body votes to pass a law, give a right, loan money, et cetera.

When you are telling one to take a vote, you are telling them. You are not asking if they want to vote for a vote, or if they want to vote for a vote for a vote. You are simply stating that a vote is in order, and no one can change that decision. So how is a democracy when votes are set in stone? Shouldn't we vote to take a vote? And shouldn't we vote to take that vote?

Well your topic makes no sense whatsoever, so anyone can make it what they want.
