Basho Watanabe had been creating the VR systems for years and now it was finally complete. The main game had been released 2 days earlier, but he decided that it would be a nice surprise to gift the players with a special present. The second system was an online, updated daily and fully real time version. He was going to give out the game update in a couple of weeks, but he was more excited about it than the system 2’s Beta testers and he had never been any good at keeping secrets. And so Basho Watanabe made arrangements for the game to go online at 10 o’clock on July 13th, his late wife’s birthday. There was a quarter of an hour left and he was starting to get jittery. So Basho pottered around the game office checking all of the stations: Moderating, Server Status and Virus Checking. He lingered at Virus Checking because of all the attacks they had seen during the development process, and also because the girl who ran the station, Juri Suzuki, was new and she was still a little nervous when it came to running the system.

“Juri how’s everything going?” he asked as kindly as possible.

“Oh Mr. Watanabe. Everything’s going fine thank you.” Juri answered with a smile.

“Good and are you ready for the big switch on?”

“Yes Sir. I just hope that I don’t forget how to work the computer,” Both Juri and Basho laughed, just as a clock symbol started flashing on Juri’s computer screen, “Oh Sir I think it’s time to switch on the system.”

“Yes you’re right. Okay everyone get ready. Server stations, are you ready to send out invites to all active players?” The workers manning the Server Status stations, all called out ‘Yes’, “then send them. And are the invites for all offline players and backup invites ready?” Again they called out ‘Yes’. “Then send them out. Okay people we’re almost ready. Server Station Alpha is the power active; if it is turn it on, if it isn’t turn it on as soon as possible.” The main screen turned blue, then a number of pictures faded onto the screen. A large map of the world stood out in the centre. Soon the map started to glow in certain areas. Japan turned bright blue, very quickly followed by America and Britain. And finally a few spots appeared where towns in the middle of nowhere finally got the invitations. A number in the corner of the screen, indicating the number of online players, kept rising and rising until it was well in the millions. Everything was perfect. The Moderators said that people were exceptionally surprised at the update and all Virus Checking stations were recording very low levels of attack. Nothing was going wrong. At that moment the euphoria of everything finally let go of Basho Watanabe and he felt tired for the first time in a week. He was just about to leave when a siren started going off and a red light began to blink. Which stations is that? Wondered Basho. It was Juri’s.

“Juri… Whats wrong?”
Ikki Takahashi was a normal boy, so normal in fact that you would probably find it hard to believe that the universe had an amazing fate waiting for him. But if you thought that, then you would have been wrong, very wrong. At this particular moment in time though he was doing what any video game obsessed child does when a game he had ordered was arriving two days late. He was sat in his lounge watching the clock.

9:30 am. Tick. 9:35 am. Tock. 9:40 am. Could time go any slower? Thought Ikki. 9:45 am. 9:50 am. 10 minutes to wait. 9:55. 5 minutes. 9:59. 1! 10 o’clock in the morning. The cuckoo clock in the hallway rang out using its ten little bird calls to notify everyone in the apartment of the time. By the end of the first ‘cuckoo call’ Ikki had already ran to and opened the door. He snatched the package from a bewildered postman’s hands and slammed the door, and ran back into the front room shouting “It’s here! It’s here! I can’t believe it’s finally here!” Ikki ripped open the packaging and was just about to place the new disc into the console when his mother came into the room.

“Ikki perhaps you would want to eat something before you play that thing?” His mother asked him.

“No Mom thanks I’m not hungry.”

“Then go get dressed,” Ikki didn’t move, but put on his best puppy dog eyes, “Don’t try that it doesn’t work on me now go get dressed.”

“AAAARRRRGGGGHHH. Fine.” Ikki placed the disc into its groove and pressed ‘ON’, before jogging into his room. He jogged back into the lounge a couple of minutes later wearing what he called his trademarked look. His yellow shirt, on top of a blue t-shirt, hung loosley on his shoulders. And his jeans were ragged and obviously well worn. "Is this okay for you Mom?" He said, not waiting for a reply he dropped to the floor and picked up the games controller. Press Start flashed on the screen.

The screen swirled with images of creatures and eventually stopped on another screen.

Ikki pressed New Game and was sent to a questionarre. He thought that some of the questions were a little odd. Such as:

If you were stuck and forced to choose which would you pick?

-Virus

-Vaccine

-Data

Ikki chose Vaccine.

What do like best?

-Fire

-Water

-Earth

-Wind

-Dark

-Light

This time he chose Light.

The next question asked, Choose 1 of these types

-Demon

-Dragon

-Human

On this question Ikki picked Human.

The screen changed once again this time saying, Thank You for your Time. This is your Partner... Monodramon. A small blue dragon apeared on the screen, waving at Ikki. A pop up on the screen opened automatically.

"I wonder what this could be?" Ikki asked himself out loud. The note read:

Hello gamer this is Basho Watanabe, the creator of your game. The pop-up you have recieved is an update. This update will allow you to play your game with people around the world and connect you to the a

main Digimon: VR server. I hope you enjoy this and Thank You all for playing my game.

Ikki was lost for words and his mouth just hung open loosely. Eventually he regained the ability to speak. "Woah. That. Is. AWESOME!" Ikki started pushing the 'next' button to skip straight into the game. "Come On. I wanna play." In all of his excitement, Ikki didn't realise that the screen had frozen and two glowing eyes had replaced the opening screens.

"Are you sure you don't want anything to eat?" Ikki's mom shouted at him.

"No Mom, I don't..." At that moment his stomach growled, "Okay you know what I will have something." As he got up the screen changed once more and he didn't see it change into a swirling vortex.

The Boy in the Cool Goggles, thats what everyone called him. At least thats what everyone else called him, his friends just called him Dan. And currently he was in the park, he was meeting a couple of his friends. He knew he was late, but he didn't know how much, so Dan checked his watch. He was very late, but hey they kept him waiting all the time. So this time they would be waiting for him. As Dan turned the corner, he realised that they weren't waiting for him.

"OH MY GOD! ARE THEY NEVER ON TIME?" He shouted out to into the park. He had forgotten where he was, and that there were other people around.

"Umm. Hey Dan, why are you screaming?" A girls voice asked him. It was Aiko, and Tosh was with her as usual playing some sort of game. Aiko looked confused, as if she had just seen something quite disturbing. Then it hit Dan, he had walked right past them without knowing it.

"Oh. Hey. Was I screaming, I'm sorry I didn't realise." He joked, but he felt as if he would explode with embaressment. Aiko chuckled at him, she knew how strange he could get at times.

"What this is wierd." Tosh had spoken for the first time since she and Aiko had gotten into the park. Dan and Aiko looked at the screen.

"Whats wrong? They asked in unison. "It looks okay."

"Yeh, but its not." Tosh started to shake her handheld console as if it would help, "That vortexy thing isn't meant to happen. It must be a glitch with that new update."

"Hey Osami, hows your new game coming along?"

"Hey Dad, its coming along good thanks," The young boy said to his father who had just sat on the sofa next to him. "In fact they just released a new update for it. Now I can play against people all over the world."

"Wow that sounds like fun." I bet your granfathers probably playing that somewhere. "Do you know if he is?"

"I looked, but I can't find his name on the online list." Osami looked a little down trodden about this.

"Don't worry if you don't find him, he'll find you." A beep started going off in a different room. "Oh hey, our breakfast is ready. you may wanna do something about that." Osami's father jumped up and trotted out of the room. What was he talking about?, he wondered, but he noticed the swirling purple and black vortex on the tv screen as he turned back towards it.

Chapter 2

"Tell me ShineGreymon, what do you think your brother would do in this situation?" The shadowed creature asked his captive. A black skeletal hand tapped a bony finger on the end of its chair. The shape of a Beelzemon skull, the last digimon to face this evil monster in battle, was the arm rest.

"Actually I don't need to ask you, do I? I could just look deep within myself." The creature smirked and stood towering over all in the chamber. A matter of strides and he was next to his chained prisoner, ShineGreymon. "Though I do like to know how you feel."

ShineGreymon raised his head towards the evil digimon, and spat. This didn't have the effect ShineGreymon wanted. He had been beaten and broken time and again by his captor and now all the energy he had was being used to hold himself together. The gobbit of spit landed just over a foot away from him and all he got in return was a cold chuckle.

"You think Victorygreymon would want you to become a spitting animal, lieing in chains on the floor?" The black hand grabbed ShineGreymon by the throat, it tightened its grip till the dragon could barely breath, and yet still he laughed.

"You know what keeps me going Shadomon? The fact that you can't bring yourself to kill me." The light dragon grabbed Shadomon's arm and pulled himself up higher, "Deep down you still have the feelings of VictoryGreymon and ZeedGarurumon. You are still my brother and my friend." The hand closed around ShineGryemon's neck till his body fell lifeless.

"You were wrong." He dropped the dead body to the floor where it started to dissolve into data. "You." He shouted to a small black digimon in the corner who had scuttled out. "Close the shields so the data cannot escape and then siphon the energy into the citadel."

Stretching his back he took the two steps needed to get back to his throne and sat down heavily. ShineGreymon you fool. All light is gone from me. And now you are gone aswell." With a wave of his hand Shadomon summoned an unbelievably thin screen to his side. He tapped onto it and the screen disappeared as easily as it had come. No more distractions. I will have this world for my own.

In the real world children playing the game Digimon: VR were kicked off of the server. For those of them that weren't, a glowing set of eyes had appeared on the screen. The eyes of Shadomon, being pulled through the screen he had used to close the gap between worlds. And for those unfortunate enough to have seen them, a new adventure was just beginning.

Okay Folks. This isn't really getting off the ground and i will take most of the blame for that. I dont write quickly enough for people to get hooked. But I am going to continue writing it. I would just like your input on how I can make my story better. Anything that can make this more reader friendly, or even if you can think that you can help me improve my style. I will take anything you've got. Thanks.
