Dark
Just answer the question posed. That's it. Don't ask why I put this thread on YCM, or what it is going to be used for, or anything. Just answer the question, and leave the thread never to look at it again. Before I ask you the question, clear your mind. If you feeling an extreme emotion (sadness, happiness, selflessness, selfishness, anger), don't answer this question yet. Wait till your mood settles, and then answer.
You and your partner-in-crime have just commited a murder. The cops know you are guilty, but don't have enough evidence to be absolutely sure you will be guilty in court. So, they offer you a deal: They split you and your partner into seperate rooms, and tell you the same thing. "We know you did the crime; so you can either rat out your partner or just keep quiet. If you both rat each other out, you each get 10 years in jail. If you rat him out, but he stays quiet, he gets 20 years in jail and you don't go to jail at all. If you stay quiet, but he rats you out, you get 20 years in jail and he doesn't go to jail at all. And if you both stay quiet, you each get 5 years in jail. Would you like to rat him out or stay quiet?" And those are the only two options you have. Note that your partner-in-crime is hearing the exact same thing. Post your answer in a spoiler below, if you can. That way, people aren't tempted to read the responses before they answer.
Brushfire
I'd stay quiet. If this person is my partner-in-crime then I sincerely hope that he'd have enough sense to not rat me out. If I could trust him another to commit a murder with me, then I honestly hope I'd be able to trust him to not rat me out.

Aequitas
I'll rat him out. It is the only chance I'll stay out of jail. If I don't rat him out, I'll either go to jail for 5 years or 20 years. If I rat him out, I'll go to jail for 0 years or 10 years.
Dark
If someone 'took' the words out of your mouth, please quote the post. Makes it easier when I am counting. Also, make sure your answers are clear as to what choice you are taking.
Google 'Prisoner's Dilemma" and read up on the Wiki article about it.

Raylen
Also know as the Prisoner's Paradox. The optimal choice does not achieve the optimal result. If you stay quiet, you get 5 years if your partner stays quiet, versus none, if you rat. So the optimal choice is to rat. However, knowing that they will rat, you'd better rat as it is 20 years staying quiet, versus 10 years ratting, so the optimal choice again is to rat. However, the optimal result is when both people stay quiet, resulting in 5 years each. (I did not read any of the spoilers bar the first). By the way, Dark, why did you give me 1 point?Remember that you are not required to post explanations' date=' as I could care less what sort of fake logicks you tried using to figure out this question.[/quote'] That's not nice. Larxene
Obviously I'd rat him out. Cause I'm a jabroni like that. Besides, if I stay quiet, I'm guaranteed to have at least 5 years of jail time, maybe even 20 years. If I rat him out, I may get off completely, or only go to jail for 10 years as opposed to 20. But if you think about it, my choice has no effect on my partner's choice. If he stays quiet, I either get off completely or go to jail for 5 years. If he rats me out, I go to jail for either 10 or 20 years. Either way, ratting him out automatically gets me the lesser sentence based on his choice. So logically, ratting him out is the best choice without question.
Great Unclean One: VK
I wouldn't rat him out. If he's hearing the same thing, I can hear what he hears then. We'd be both smart to keep quiet, go to jail, break out, and start a new life together.
Luna Lovegood
The logical answer is this:If I stay quiet, I either get 5, or 20 years. 5+20=25If I open my mouth. I either get 10 or 0 years. 10+0=10Therefore, on average, I will be better off ratting him out. But, that is the purely hypothetical way. As we are partners in crime, we must be close. Friends, probably. Therefore, I will like it my my responsibility not to talk. It is a dilemma I hope never to face.

Lemniscate
This is the Prisoner's Dilemma, and while technically it is better for neither person to say anything, it is far more likely that they both say something. Saying something is the Nash Equilibrium for this scenario, which shows that equilibrium does not always mean the best choice available. This is one of the basic games in game theory, and is used to discuss Equilibrium.
My answer is irrelevant, the important stuff is in the spoiler above. Dark
How so? Because you are going with the option that will get you 0/10 yrs in jail. The other option will get you 5/20 yrs. But 10 > 5. Don't attempt to apply fail logicks to this problem. Just answer the damm question. Yes' date=' the above was fail logicks. Godot
Well, I would rat my partner out because there is the chance that I can get 0 years in prison, if we both know this ahead of time though, we are both likely to rat eachother out, and get 10 years in prison. But, if my partner did commit a murder, there is the possibility that he would murder me for ratting him out, but that's aside the point. So, I guess I would rat him out.
