Responding will only invite them to continue anyhow, and ignoring them altogether is a more effective message of sending the "You're not worth my time" message to them without actually having to say it. Other responses include: "Charming.", "Splendid.", "Uh-huh, that's nice.", and "Lovely." And then resume the conversation from wherever it left off after that. If someone is being a particular pain the ass, I might make some snide remark, but I can't really say what that remark is, since it's always situational. And if all else fails, only then do you punch them in the face. Of course, they have to be quite the problematic repeat offender to merit this. I've personally never had to do it myself, but I did threaten to once. Oh, and be sure never to get angry. "IF YOU DON'T SHUT UP I'M GONNA FREAKING PUNCH YOU!!!!' is not the way to go. If you're going to threaten physical blows, keep it calm, keep it uncaring. A simple: "I'm going to punch you." will suffice. Dead pan. That will typically get them to shut up.
