How to Make Animations Out Of Sprite Sheets GIMP User's Only!

Recommended Posts

Hello, I've found that there are very few tutorials showing you how to make animations out of spread sheets. So today I'm going to be showing you. Sorry PS User's but I'm not sure if this works for you guys, but feel free to try :)

Lets get started!

Step One

First off, start by making a new image 80 x 80, filled with transparency.

Step1.png

Step Two

Next you need to obtain a sprite sheet. Go ahead and get one from this site http://spriters-resource.com/ anyone is fine, even the ones with a colored background.

Step Three

Open the sprite sheet up. (Not on you 80 x 80)

Step3.png

Step Four

Select the Rectangle Select Tool.

Step4.png

Step Five

Make a rectangle over the sprite you want to be the beginning of your animation.

Step5.png

Step Six

Now either press ctrl + x, or right click inside the square/edit/cut

Step6.png

Step Seven

Now go back to your original 80 x 80 and paste it in, then click new layer.

Step7.png

Step Seven and a Half

(Only preform this step if your sprite has a background color)

Select the fuzzy tool, and click outside of the sprite, then hit delete.

Step71.png

Step Eight

Repeat until you have the whole animation sequence.

Step Nine

Easily the most important, and easiest to screw up.

After you have clicked save as... you must change it to "GIF image (*.gif)"

Step9.png

Now you have to add .gif at the end of whatever you are calling the animation.

Step9con1.png

Step Ten

Click save, make sure that it is set to save as animation.

Step101.png

Now click export and make sure your settings match mine.

Step10done.png

Step Eleven

Now upload it to www.photobucket.com or whichever site you prefer, and WALA! Your animation is complete.

Leave any comments about any trouble you are having, and please post your results, I want to see how they come out! Here is mine.

Good Luck!

pretty good tut, the only problem i have with making myn on GIMP is the positioning (since i last time i tried went for a one of like naruto and that, therefore larger background area..) since on GIMP i cant position right i usually use flash.. but if your using characters that dont need to run around much positionings not much of a problem on GIMP ^^
