I'd like to get some feedback (or advice) on a deck I've been working on for a while. It's essentially a blue/black mill deck.

CREATURES (16)

4x Hedron Crab

4x Halimar Excavator

4x Jwari Shapeshifter

4x Umara Raptor

INSTANT/SORCERY (24)

4x Tome Scour

4x Spell Pierce

4x Memory Sluice

4x Mind Funeral

4x Counterspell

4x Glimpse the Unthinkable

LAND (20)

4x Watery Grave

4x Drowned Catacomb

2x Halimar Depths

2x Jwar Island Refuge

8x Island

Right now' date=' I have an idea to take out the [b']Umara Raptor[/b] for Agadeem Occultists - so I can take things out of their graveyard to add to my limited defenses. Also, I'm considering putting in Leyline of the Void in there to counteract the new Eldrazi monsters that shuffle the graveyard back into the library (and to make sure my opponent cannot recycle their resources).

Whatcha think?

The deck looks good. I'd say try to work Agadeem Occultist in with out taking out all the Umara Raptor since that work work as a good beatstick should you need one.

A lot of the Eldrazi monsters that return the grave to the deck cost A LOT to summon. And even then if they are summoned odds are they'll beat you before you get them to deck out since they have REALLY high attack. Also they only return the grave when they are destroyed.

Well, I got to play my deck today - and it won all 3 games (even one against an Eldrazi deck). I put in the one Leyline of the Void I own in there. It came in handy. The guy was PISSED when he saw it hit the field. He could no longer hide behind his large Eldrazi. What made the guy frustrated further was when I robbed his graveyard of the lower Eldrazi with the Agadeem Occultist.

Just trying to figure out if I should try and use the Bloodchief Ascension tactic for this Deck for a secondary kill condition - in case I cannot get the Leyline out on the field. The ony thing I am having troube with is inflicting damage to activate the Ascension's effect. I could put in Countersquall or some kind of cheap damage spell - as the deck isn't meant to attack. Any suggestions?

I have a mill deck of my own and I don't take the Ally approach; I rely on Traumatize + Haunting Echoes and Nemesis of Reason.

I'll post my deck in case you want to take some ideas, but keep in mind I don't purchase singles so I used what I got from boosters - it's not optimal, but it wins.

Lands:

1x Drowned Catacomb

2x Halimar Depths

2x Jwar Island Refuge

11x Island

8x Swamp

Creatures:

4x Hedron Crab

3x Kraken Hatchling

1x Drowner Initiate

2x Extractor Demon

2x Nemesis of Reason

Other Spells:

1x Jace Beleren

2x Sanity Grinding

2x Broken Ambitions

1x Dream Fracture

2x Twincast

4x Sign in Blood

1x Telemin Performance

1x Archive Trap

1x Mind Funeral

4x Tome Scour

1x Haunting Echoes

2x Traumatize

2x Sadistic Sacrament

Yes, it's a mess and ideally I'd have more than one copy of some cards (Mind Funeral, for one). It's another approach at milling, and it lacks counterspells, but admittedly, that's because I have around 40 budget decks and my few copies are all scattered around.

Also, don't worry too much about the Eldrazi if you're not playing Limited. I don't think they'll be terribly widespread, but don't quote me on this.

It's an interesting deck. I like how you use Nemesis of Reason and Haunting Echoes (Both of which I have in my sideboard). Good use of Drowner Initiate as well. Have you considered using Allies for milling - like the Jwari Shapeshifter and Halimar Excavator? They are relatively inexpensive and work surprisingly well.

You have a few too many lands, I believe. I keep hearing from the guys at the local card shop that 22 lands should be more than enough. I would suggest more split lands.

Like I said, never tried the Ally approach, but I might if I find a few. ;)

I tend to keep my lands at 24 when I have no mana abilities elsewhere, it's how I was taught, but if I start mana flooding I'll fix it. M10duals are out of my budget, and the uncommon ones usually don't compensate coming in tapped with their second effect, so I don't use them that often.

What I do think I need is fewer 1-of's, more Mind Funerals and Haunting Echoes, but they're high in demand at my card shop so I can't get them...

You can always order them online. I know a site that has just about any card you're looking for - and some are rather inexpensive.

I know there is an artifact that makes sure that permanents that you play come out untapped - which helps for permanents that come out tapped (like the dual and special lands)
