Mechanics and Balance I've played Yugioh, Magic, L5R, World of warcraft TCG, and Shadowfist as well as stand alone card games. how the cards work by themselves and in conjunction with others is the most important thing in design... nothing else matters. To hell with card art

all yuo moaning about grammar, i have most of the first series of cards and their grammer is much diffrent to the newer ones, there ae so many examples theres no point even poutting one up, also the picture and how blanced it is makes the card.

acctually forget the grammer it isnt really anything as long as it makes sence looks good and someone somewhere can use it and it fits a strategy then its a 10/10 in most peoples books.

Okay so there are a lot of Things to Consider when trying to create a Good Card. I am now going to tell them from the most Important going to the less Important:

1-Balance:

balance must be considered when Creating a Card. It is the most Important Part of making a Good Card. When someone tells you that your Card is not balanced they mean the Card is either Overpowered, which means that your card has Powerful Effects but at the same time has no Drawbacks, Underpowered, which means that your Card does not have any Effects that could be considered Powerful and at the same time has Drawbacks which is not Good because it could not help you in any way when you Use it in a Duel. And finally your Card can belong to the 3rd and most Unbalanced Group, Broken. a Broken Card is a Card that can cause a Specific Situation in which you can either Stop most of your opponent's Actions or it could win you the Duel and at the same time it has no Drawbacks. That is what most of those Cards in the Game are Forbidden.

2-Usability:

Usability also needs to be Considered when Creating a Card. You can see if your Card Packs Usability by imagining that the card is Real and then seeing how it would be Used in the Game. Better said you need to see if it was real how would Duelists Use it in their Duels. Would it be able to Stop your opponent's Actions, would it help your Actions and so on but at the same time you need to Consider if it is not powerful enough no one would use it.

3-Originality

A Card to be Good it has to be original. Originality Counts a lot when creating a Card because if a Card is original, more People notice it and find it Interesting. So when Creating a card, make sure it's Original. You can see if a card is Original depending on the Type of Card can be like this. If it is a Vanilla Monster card, then it needs to have an Interesting Description and Picture. If it is an Effect Monster the effect has to include something no Other Real cards Includes and that makes it Interesting. And when making a Spell or Trap Cards just like Effect Monsters it needs to have an interesting Effect and Of Course a Picture that Fits with the Name of the Card.

4-OCG-Official Card Grammar:

A very Important Part of a Good Card is OCG.OCG stands for Official Card Grammar and is how well the Effect or Description on the Card is written. By that i mean does it have any Word Errors and is it written with the proper Yu-Gi-Oh Terms. So whatever you do when making a Card watch the OCG very closely.

5-Picture

The Picture is as well an Important part of the card although it is not as Important as the Other Things i have stated before. The Picture most Importantly has to go with the Name which really is Important but not as much as the above things.

So i put them from most Important to less Important. I hope you like them.:)

Heh, opinion on card making? Mine has changed overtime. Nowadays I value originality more than grammar, playability or balance even. I can't expect a card to have it all, especially since most of the people posting cards nowadays are relative newcomers. So I'm always pleased when I see a genuinely new idea pop up - the official TCG is completely stale, card effects have no flavour, the monster being a dragon or a brick means exactly the same when you read the lore. There's no originality, everything is carefully sanitized, if you will, so it won't break the meta but people will still care enough to invest in the cards.

In a card-making site, I think originality should take first place. As you improve, work on your grammar, look up some cards by experienced card-makers, but above all, be creative.

Don't make cards out of pictures, just build the card and look up an image later. That way you can focus entirely on the effect first, with no restraints. I know a lot of older card makers who do the exact opposite, and sometimes it's the picture itself that gives you inspiration, but personally I prefer thinking up the effect first.

Of course, if you've been around long enough to know better, then writing the card properly and using decent pictures is expected, but one thing at a time. ;)

It depends. Origionaity is great, as is balance and creativity. But, there is no generaly ultimate tips. All you need is an idea sparked off by a mind set. It realy depends on who you are. If you like cards that are vanillas with awsome stories, and you are good at it, or you like machines that are also spirits with massive effects, my tip is stick with it for as long as posible. But, you should also let your mind and knowledge of other card types expand. This is how I think cards should be made and the philosophy behind it.

*AHEM*

My question about this new 'Card Grammar' rule. Why must you not call it OCG?

Who said it was a rule? I merely asked so you arent so formal and express that something is Official. When it is not. And this request applies to this thread only.

I was thinking about it, but what about people who just post their cards assuming you can see it. I would love it if they put the lore their, but most people do. But some people do not or post 1 lore and not the others. I think that would be helpful if they all posted their lores, b/c I have dial up and some times I can't see them. So IMO, I think it would be helpful.

Well' date=' I;m not saying that I don't want just text written cards, I'm just saying that ets say they have an Awesome card and you can't view it or rate it, then what? Not rate or comment. To me, that is cruel and mean.

[/quote']

That happens in maybe 8% of the YCM population? Not enough to make such a drastic change.

. I feel as if the card needs to have a focus, and without one it just kind of drifts off. I don't like the current meta-game much, so most of my cards focus on trying to stop various aspects of it. Right now, it's anything Synchro related. Anyway, originality comes next, and that's always one of my problems. And lastly, Card Grammar. As long as I can understand the card, I don't worry too much about it.

I personaly think the cards need to be well thought out, and go well togethor, cards need to flow with the pic, as said above, but I cant seem to get any good pics to work, it keeps saying that I cant use em, cause there not images, and that ruins the whole flow of my cards
