The InB4mat

Recommended Posts

This is a strange idea inspired by duels with my friend. It stemmed from the fact that you can always tell when your opponent is about to sync for Brio, or drop an Honest. It's just this sinking feeling in your stomach, where you realize you already used both of your Bottomless Trap Holes/only have 1800 Life Points left.

Enter the InB4mat. When your opponent takes an action, you can 'inb4' them and stop them. Here's how it works:
Players must declare they are about to activate a Spell or Trap before they actually do so. At that time, you can declare 'inb4 (cardname)'. If you call the card correctly, it is negated and destroyed. Otherwise, you lose 1000 Life Points.

When your opponent Tributes monsters for a Tribute Summon or sends monster to the Graveyard for a Synchro Summon OR activates a card with an effect to Summon a monster(s), you can declare 'inb4 (cardname)'. If you're correct, the summon of the monster(s) with that name is negated and it is destroyed. If you're wrong, you lose 1000 Life Points.

When you declare an attack (or are attacked), you can declare 'inb4 (cardname)'. If a card is activated from your opponent's hand or Graveyard with that name (Honest, Battle Fader, Necro Gardna, etc.), it is negated and destroyed. Otherwise, you lose 1000 Life Points.

When you attack a face-down monster that was NOT flipped face-down, you can declare 'inb4 (cardname)'. If the attacked monster has that name, you take no Battle Damage during this battle, and that monster's effects are negated during the Battle Phase, and when it is sent to the Graveyard. And, if you're wrong, you lose 1000 Life Points.

inb4ing is treated as chaining to the action in question (even if it is done BEFORE as in #3), so doing so means you forfeit the ability to chain to that action. You can only inb4 the card in Chain Link 1. You are NEVER required to inb4.

BONUS RULES:
The following cards are extra-affected when inb4'd:
Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier: If this card is inb4'd successfully, the player who summoned it discards 1 random card.
Honest: If this card is inb4'd successfully, the player whose LIGHT monster was battle has that monster's ATK become 0.
Judgment Dragon: If this card is inb4'd successfully, the player who summoned it removes from play 4 "Lightsworn" monsters from their Graveyard. The monsters must have different names, if possible.
Stardust Dragon: If this card is inb4'd successfully, the player who summoned it destroys 1 card they control.
Any monsters Special Summoned by Infernity Launcher: The player sends 2 Synchro Monsters from their Extra Deck to the Graveyard.
Caius the Shadow Monarch: The player who summoned it takes 1000 damage.
Cyber Dragon: The player who summoned it cannot Normal Summon or Set for the rest of the turn.
Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter: The player who controlled it removes from play the top 3 cards of their deck.
Dark Hole: The player who inb4'd destroys 1 monster controlled by the player who activated it.
Mirror Force: The player who activated it cannot Set Spells and Traps until their next End Phase.

Increase the cost ... lol

Something like: If you call it wrong, discard 1 card. You cannot inb4 if you do not have a card in your hand.

It seems most appropriate to me that a game mechanic has Life Points as a cost, though it seems appropriate to increase the cost, perhaps to 2000. I suppose people could choose costs based on their own preferences and experiences.

Force the players to show the back of the card and then flip it.

That sounds good.

EDIT: One of the things I like about this sort of idea is that it encourages players to use unexpected cards to avoid being inb4'd. It increases the use of Archetype-only cards outclassed by generic cards - like Wall of Thorns, for example.
