Dark
Haven't made a thread in a while. Feels... weird. Just a question me and my friends were "debating", so I wanted to pose it to the forum. How do you (subjectively) define "cute", "pretty", and "hot", and how do you differentiate between the three? So if me and you were sitting on a park bench watching girls walk by, what is your logic by which you determine someone as "cute", "pretty", or "hot"? For me, it's really more of an unconscious thing, and I can't really pinpoint it. I just feel like I am more prone to associate "cute" with girls of an Asian descent and "hot" with girls of a European or American descent. Legend Zero
It's all in the face for me. Her voice also has to be within tolerable range. There are some races that I prefer over others, but humans always judge so I don't really feel bad.

Let's say you see a girl and call her cute. Why is she not "pretty" or "hot"? What makes you say "cute" over the other two?
Legend Zero
Oh. Well cute would be more childish in looks and actions, imo.
evilfusion
That's difficult to say, actually. "Cute" to me is the most desirable quality of the three. Girls don't necessarily strive to be cute, however, as the latter two sound "better". Cuteness is defined by their smile, by their face, and primarily by qualities that aren't typically represented among "sex objects". It has nothing to do with their chest size or legs, but more by how they present themselves. Cute girls can often be viewed as somewhat shy. They may not even be fully aware of their attractiveness, or they're humbler about it. This attitude comes across when you interact with them, and it's this attitude that makes them cute. Pretty refers to more basic attraction factors. A pretty girl is not necessarily a girl you'd gawk over, or see in fashion magazines. A pretty girl's looks are more superficial, such as hair style and clothing that accentuate their features, such as legs and curves. Pretty girls also tend to be much more self-aware, and their attitude is more confident than a cute girl's, or they make more effort in displaying their attractiveness. Hot is defined more or less as "pretty x 10". You take second looks on instinct, your attention is drawn to them. More or less everything about them is attractive, but whereas some people say "hot", some may also have more derogatory ideas. You rarely consider someone hot unless they are very well displayed. Hair is huge. Clothing is huge. Other things are huge.

I don't really think cute should be correlated with the face. It just seems awkward to say that, since I can think of more than five or six examples, in my school at least, where someone with a "nice" (had to use quotes otherwise it'd sound awkward...) face doesn't click as "cute" to me. I agree that attitude plays a part in cuteness, and maybe shy is an attribute of cuteness, but I disagree with Legend Zero when he says that cute defines someone who is cartoony or silly in their actions. It just seems a bit... off. Pretty is really the gray area in this debate because one can't really say what pretty is. I was reading over your example and thinking of my school in particular, and there are many cases where you interpretation is correct and incorrect. So I can't really say that works for me, but it's a damn good explanation. Also, well put for hot. Just... well put.
WTFauKorean
it's all about attitude, look only have to be a 6 and up for the first two which is cute and hot, pretty requires a 8 and up cute is all about attitude for me clumsy and dependant and a bit clueless, but kind at heart and compassionate, pretty much brains = heart hot is all about the b****es, they got the make up, the body, the money and their spoiled and there not afraid to sock a babe in the face, they can really tell you to stfu the right way. this attacts all the boy's because dudes have a sense of accomplishment when they pick up an chick that has really picky standards pretty is just a generality no personality specifications but really good looking face wise hotties got the body the pretties got the face btw you gave me genious idea thx
evilfusion
It's subjective. I tend to look towards the face before considering other details, which is why I mentioned it specifically for cute. Look, if you classify as "pretty" or "hot", we can safely assume you have a great face. Cute doesn't require perfection, and in fact, cuteness is brought out by imperfections. A small blemish disqualifies most as "hot" off the bat. Attitude is key. When your friends ask you "hey, what do you think of that girl?", you will never say "pretty". The word "pretty" is awkward, and "beautiful" is often sappy. You are only permitted to show disgust, mild attraction ("cute") or say "hot". In most cases, cute is also used when you don't know them well, because it's inoffensive. You can't flirt with a girl and say "hot", unless they're either genuinely attractive or confident. Because "hot" classifies them as sexually desirable, which may be the wrong approach based on your intentions.
Gospel.
Just basing a relationship on common ground apparently works (herherherrrrr) Good looks ae a 'bonus' I suppose. But then again, I don't really care (I'm probably lying.) As long as she likes good music, isnt reclusive on a creepy level (reclusive emo girls are a no-no,) and if she has respectable family and friends. (once again, I'm probably lying.) Yang Xiao-Long
Cute people are really kawaii. Just saying. Asians tend to be cute, usually. Most of the time it's Asians, but in other people they might need to be quite skinny with not a lot on their body frame. Pretty people have their face arranged in a way that allows it to be called so. Pretty people (girls obviously) are also the people that look good in anything they wear on a daily basis. Hot people are called that because they're FAPFAP material. Qualities that make the opposite gender want them to be in the same bed. Yeah... Beautiful is usually personality + pretty Then again, what may be cute may be hot to someone else, and what may be pretty to someone may be cute to a different person. It's all completely subjective. Anbu-of-Sand
I find someone cute normally a tad shorter then me (not saying I'm short), along with being shy at times as well. Pretty much girls who say "Awwe!!" here and there, but don't overdo it. Eye color as well is a big deal (for me, and for some odd reason) when it comes to saying if a girl is cute. Pretty I don't use much. Beautifal is something I would use for a girl I'm in love with / in a relationship with. Hot is well, what Smesh said. ~/Coolio Prime\~
Cute- Love of something ranging from soft to platonic. Pretty- Usually to do with something's presentation. A nice appearance. Hot- Directly sexually appealing. I'm sure there are exceptions. Cute girls have an air of innocence and bliss about them or are generally happy, someone pretty is usually dressed up nicely, and someone hot is usually treated well by puberty and confident. Mehmani
Discussing stuff like this on YCM will result in the weeaboos crawling out of the woodwork, so it's mainly a no-no. "Cute", "Pretty" and "Hot" are subjective, though only to a certain extent. Most people have superficially similar ideas regarding them but they often vary from person to person. "Cute" is normally used to define someone with a nice face. I would say that as the vast majority of straight males take body into account, "cute" is specific enough to be classified as a minor fetish (if someone has a thing for "cute" girls). However, girls use the word "cute" in a different way. When a girl says a male is "cute", that is the equivalent of a guy saying a girl is "hot". When a male says "pretty" it is normally not used as a connotation of being aroused by the target. "Pretty" tends to mean that the target is attractive and you can see why others would find them attractive, but you personally don't find them particularly attractive. I could say that Queen Elizabeth II was very pretty when she was a young woman - I am saying that she is good looking and I can see why people found her attractive. However, I personally am not very attracted to her. "Pretty" also rarely takes body into account. "Hot" or "Sexy" is an assessment of the person's entire being as a whole (at least I take personality into account, but I know that many others don't). "Hot/Sexy" normally means that they have a desirable body and can invoke *ahem* (I'm trying to make this as PG as possible) sexual feelings in a person. "Hot/Sexy" are normally associated with girls that have large breasts and men with large muscles (this includes the other muscle).
Tentacruel
Like you said in your first post Dark, it's kind of an unconscious thing for me as well. I don't know why I would consider certain girls "cute" or "hot," just as I don't know why I love the taste of sushi. (You could get into the biological science of it, but let's not. .Starrk
I personally love the shy type. It's just...I'm more attracted to shy girls because that classifies them as cute and pretty.
Kelp'
Well in my case, "pretty" isn't a word I use often. But with "cute" and "hot" it's sorta a degree thing. Cute is kinda a word that's used more loosely than hot. Normally cute only refers to the face, as guys can't really have cute bodies. Well I guess they could, but I don't really associate the word with the entire body. Hot can describe the whole body, face, physique, etc. So hot seems to represent a stronger attraction, at least from my perspective.
J-Max
Cute = A really nice backside and gorgeous eyes. Oh and glasses is a MUST! I find glasses is a Turn on and makes girls look really Cute. Pretty = See above. Hot = Am I allowed to talk about that here? If the Mods are fine with it then I can Spoiler it. I have a lot of things to say and may not be suitable to the Little ones.
Catman25
Cute - Pretty much reserved for the shy types. Hot - 95% of the time, a slut, but they're attractive. Pretty is like a mix between the two. Not very detailed, but that's how my brain works.
Marisa Kirisame-ze
I have no idea. I'm just gonna try out how I feel with it. Cute - Someone that you really, really want to squish and hug. It might be in the way they act, look, or say things, but these people always come off as pleasing and adorable. It can be a small person to someone who's tall but shy, etc etc. To me, when I see someone who's cute, they'd be a shy glasses type who messes up from time to time, but still manages to smile and blush it through.
She's tall, wears glasses, but she's extremely shy. She blushes like there's no tomorrow and doesn't always know what to say since she considers herself as "not talkative". She loves reading, but also has a fascination for drawing and video games and will be doing those things more than being occupied with friends. However, she does love hanging out and she goes to parties, but due to the fact that she's shy, it's hard for her to be completely herself, but she tries. Oh, and did I mention blushing? Because really, she blushes A LOT. Her smile is gorgeous and she tends to get nervous. Her style is absolutely adorable too. She dresses in jackets and shirts, while occasionally wearing a skirt when she feels comfortable. SHE'S JUST SO MAJORLY CUTE. I'D POST A PICTURE IF A COULD.
Pretty - A girl who always looks happy and is absolutely charming. She knows what to say and dresses with a mature nature (no, not mature like a slut, but mature like a classy female) and might style her hair here and there. Also, confidence. Not arrogance, but a girl who stands for what she believes in without putting others down. Inner beauty has to be a factor when calling a girl pretty too. Hot - WHO CARES ABOUT HER PERSONALITY, SHE JUST LOOKS STUNNING. The type who was born sexy and will no doubt keep being sexy.

Bahamut - Envoy of the End
This thread kinda reminds me of marry, date, and avoid (and all variations thereof). Its not that hard to work out for me, given a moment. Hot people are those who my gut reaction on sight is I just want to jump straight into bed with.. until it becomes apparent that, 9 times out of 10, they are really nasty fake people who make me sick and think no way. Cute girls are great friends and are terribly lovely, but hard to see as anything more than that. Pretty/Beautiful are just too lovely (what it's a good word) to describe other than just pure goodness in every way, and obviously my prefered option.
