Profile Pic Patterns

This might have already been asked, but I'm wondering why so many people have colorful patterns as their profile pics? I hear it has something to do with the fact that if they don't have pics so for some reason they are given an pic... but why are their pics changing?

Well the YCMaker was giving everyone an avatar that looks like a pattern to anyone who had no avatar.
Each person gets a similar pattern with a difference, so everyone doesn't have the same one.
Of course the person might just change their avatar.

... It's not just me is it? I'm not the only one who noticed the ones with the Patterns for Avatars are the worst people on the board (and most likely to be a spambot), right? >_>
