The National Day of Silence

So, on the National Day of Silence, hundreds of thousands of students nationwide take a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in their schools or communities.

This year, it's on Friday, April 15th, 2011.

It's my first year attempting to do this, and what makes it hard is the fact that I have to go to school. However, I'm getting a lot of my friends into it, so we'll all be silent together in an attempt to make others realize how many voices they'll loose of the LGBT community, along with our straight supporters. I'm actually really excited, due to being the icon of my school for Bisexuality (therefore, I have a great responsibility in having to do this), and I hope that maybe, we'll somehow be an impact on that day.

Anyone else know of it and/or are participating? What are you doing to end the silence?

It really shouldn't be hard for most of you, [s]since a lot of you don't even leave your house[/s], but think about the reasons behind the silence.

It's really okay. No worries. xD

Same reason you gave, I have to go to school too! ;D
It's going to be really hard to shut up while all my friends are talking, lol. And I have to somehow lead the clarinet section in band class without speaking a word. I think I can do it. ^^

Clair; Yes, and at the end of the day we'll feel so accomplished :3
And I actually just found out what the LAMBDA Papers were today, so it's all good~ xD

^They're basically a printable copy of rights, if you need to show them to administrators, etc.

Slash; What matters is that you at least try~

Sorry I wont be participating for 3 reasons...
1. If I saw a girl get murdered on the street I would call for help...
2. Silence doesn't help anything in my view to speak out is what really helps...
3. I believe if we stop paying attention to this problem it will stop...
4. My beliefs uphold freedom of speech to the highest extent...
5. I am an A-Hole...

You are a sad, rude, ignorant little man. I pity you and hope that some day you will learn the severity of your actions whilst paying for your mistakes.

I highly recommend you read the text "First they came..." so you can get a better understanding of issues like this one.

I would disagree but hey everybody has an opinion...
No, really, you're an idiot. I can tell, just by the "3" reasons you posted (when in reality, there were actually 5, but hey, idiots cannot count).

1. If I saw a girl get murdered on the street I would call for help...
Not really a valid reason to not do this, "challenge". ANY person would call for help, unless there are other people around. Then the bystander effect may kick in, so in actuality, you might not actually call for help.

3. I believe if we stop paying attention to this problem it will stop...
Yeah, because ignoring people getting beat up, harassed pretty much every day and all that will just magically disappear if we ignore it. Really now? How would you feel if somebody beats you up every day and you try to get help, but nobody will help you, because they're all ignoring the problem.

4. My beliefs uphold freedom of speech to the highest extent...
Beliefs this and beliefs that. None of it matter. Freedom of speech doesn't really even exist. It never has. The so called "freedom of speech" really isn't anything but an illusion. We can't talk about anything. People are controlled by the Government, even when it comes to speech. Everything nowadays is filtrated/censored, and we, the people can't do anything about it.

Yes, yes you are.

Actually I have experienced that thank you very much but I learned that words are useless...
So in your (crappy) opinion, it's better to ignore getting abused and let said person who is abusing you do it as long as they want than actually dealing with the problem? No wonder this world is such a crappy place, it's full with idiots like you.

If I was still in school I'd participate

First off though, don't flame me for what I'm about to say cause I'm on your side.

I myself am a 100% bisexual man (say man cause I'm 21 & lets not go into the issue of a 21 year old on a site for kids) and was harassed by people that are against it.

The thing is though, as much as I wanted them to stop. I couldn't stop them. We all have different ways of thinking & so we won't ever fully see eye to eye with one another. To take away that would be well, wrong in my eyes. I'm not saying that i don't hate them. I'm just saying that mentally I wouldn't be able to stop them.

If any of you know, a month or 2 ago, a court (not sure which but you could look it up) said that the people that go to gay funerals for veterans and bash there homosexuality with words such as "Your rotting in hell now for your Sins" was there right to do so in free speech . This at the very start repulsed me to no end but even so I had to agree. It is indeed a part of free speech. In conclusion, neither side is bad, it's just that are views are different. Just as we are trying to change there views, they try to change ares.

If they are beating you up... Kick their A**... If they are making fun of you ignore it their words mean nothing what you feel about yourself is what matters...
Typical response. Do you even think before you post? Maybe you physically can't stop them from kicking your ass? Ever thought of that? Well, by the response you gave me, obviously not. And now, let's tackle the "ignore the verbal/mental" abuse argument:

Every person has their own limits on how much verbal/mental abuse they can take. Ignoring it will last you for only so long. After you've hit you're limit, you're in trouble, you will break down and you actually might start believeing what is being said against you.

Well I feel sorry for those that do have limits but no matter what type of "event" I participate in it wont help I am a blimp on the radar nothing more... Nothing I do will ever make a serious change in this world... All I can do is make a change in myself... I see where you are coming from and I apologize for the "Apparant" trolling(so says a certain user)... My opinions wont change but you have enlightened me today... So thanx and I bid you adieu...
Yet you think that just ignoring the issue will be of any help? Wow, aren't you useless. You can make an impact if you truly put your mind to things, for example, organizing an event. You think my school just randomly found out about this day and decided to announce it? Hell no. I had to put fliers for this day together, design shirts to sell, talk to all these administrators - all these things just so my school would be aware of the National Day of Silence. We're all hoping to ban together and stand up for the bullying going on through the silence. We're ready to take on anything tomorrow. We're making an impact.

Your reasons listed are so ridiculous, I'd just duct tape your mouth shut the whole day.

You forget it's not just about goddamn words.

There are people who are driven to the point of suicide due to abuse and psychical bullying.

You'd ignore someone punching you in the stomach everyday? I don't think so. Yet, we don't act out. We just simply have to put a stop to this under campaigns and organized protests, in the most human way possible. The LGBT community is outstanding in the way they coordinate things and try their hardest to make a difference in society.

To not be bullied or degraded for the way they love.
