To be fair, it was stated that mathematics is read from left to right, so when you see something such as 6/2(3), the default is to say that the 6/2 must be the first operation done. Again, because we are not sure what the slash encompasses and what it doesn't, we are required to assume that it is read standard left-to-right, and all "MD" in "PEMDAS" is done first from left to right, even if the answer of nine was against the author's intentions.

How is the TC an idiot? Sure, it was a terrible idea for a thread, but he was technically the first person in this thread to get it correct that the expression was worth 9. If anything, the person who posted right after the TC is the idiot for claiming the answer was 1 without addressing any of the ambiguity involved. At least when people said it could be "9 or 1", they addressed the ambiguity, but that doesn't detract from the fact that the answer is 9 regardless.

You don't assume in math....you want the right answer. How come nobody else can see that the problem can be worked 2 ways?
I said assume, but it's a fact set in stone. When there is no priority in the equation, it's worked from left to right.

People. Brackets are not generally there to clarify, they're added to change the meaning.

6/2(1+2) = (6/2)(1+2), that's the correct way to read equations. There is no 'other' way and it's not ambiguous. It might be written incorrectly, and have been intended to mean something else, but that's the person writing it being terrible at maths, not maths being ambiguous. If you want to say 6/(2(1+2)), then say it. I don't know where you got this "PEMDAS" or whatever from, but it's not supposed to separate addition/subtraction or multiplication and division. That's like saying 1-4+5 = -8, because you do the addition first.

Any decent calculator will agree. For that matter, the C++ programming language, and all other languages, agree. Considering most high-level maths is done on a computer, that means that even if you're somehow right, and Multiplication should come before Division, it's impractical to use that since the computer disagrees.

Wait, Math isn't a religion? Dammit, I guess I'll go to Pastafarianism.
Yes, us Pastafarians need more converts. <3

It's a topic about math and you guys start talking about religion.

It doesn't, PEMDAS itself says that MD and AS are done at the same time from left to right. They're just being stupid.
