Sure, you could tap out, then use the mana, or use a lot of nonbasics as well, but it would probably cause more harm than good. If that's how it will stay, fine. But I would suggest replacing his second ability with something along the lines of -2 Scry 4, so you don't exile all your lands and get nothing out of the deal. Of course, you could change it so you could choose the number of basics you exile. That would actually be a pretty nice solution, come to think of it.
