Like, if you've played Wind Waker, how once Link draws the Master Sword, it lifts the restraint on Ganons powers, it could be like that. Somepony does something to some artifact or something, and that releases him. Or, maybe, he could have been sleeping for 1000+ Years, and somepony accidentally awakens him.
