Hi!

I had an idea once, so I decided to act on it. This is what I came up with:

Memories

This card cannot attack unless there is a card named "Memory's Path" banished. At the beginning of your Standby Phase, you can put a time counter of a banished card named "Memory's Path" If you do not, this card is destroyed. If this card deals battle damage to your opponent, you can look at their hand and choose a card from it. If you do, your opponent discards that card. If this card would be put into a graveyard from play, banish it instead.

Once per turn, during your Standby Phase, you can tribute this card. If you do, you can remove all "Time Counters" from a banished card named "Memory's Path" and you and your opponent switched Banished Zones

This card can attack your opponent directly. At the beginning of your Battle Phase, you can put 4 time counters on a banished card with the name "Memory's Path." If you do not, this card is destroyed. If this card is destroyed and sent to the graveyard, banish it instead.

This card cannot be Special Summoned. This card is returned to your hand during the End Phase of the turn that this card is Normal Summoned or flipped face up. When this card is Summoned or flipped face up, you can put three time counters on a banished card named "Memory's Path." If you do not, this card is destroyed. When this card is Summoned or flipped face up, your opponent skips their next draw phase.

Fairy of Memory + 1 or more other non-tuner monsters
This card can only be Summoned via Synchro Summon. When this card comes into play, unless there is a card named "Memory's Path" currently banished, destroy this card. When this card comes into play, put ten time counters on a banished card named "Memory's Path." This card can attack once for each monster on the battlefield. At the beginning of your End Step, you can banish this card, your hand, and the top ten cards of your library. If you do not, you lose the game.

If this card would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, banish it instead. During your Draw Phase, if this card is banished, put a time counter on it. You can skip your draw to negate this effect. If you do, cannot draw any cards this turn. If this card would ever have 10 time counters on it, you lose the game. Once per turn, during your End Phase, you can search your deck for a card, banish it, send the top four cards from your deck to your graveyard, and put the banished card on top.

If there is not a card currently banished named "Memory's Path," this card does nothing. During your Draw phase, you do not put a Time Counter on a banished card named "Memory's Path" If you or your opponent would draw a card, instead reveal the top card of your deck. If it is a Monster, Special Summon it. If it is a Spell Card, play it without paying additional costs. If it is a trap card banish it. Each player can only set one card per turn. Each player can play banished cards as if they were in their hand.

When you activate this card, you can add 2 "Time Counters" to a banished card named "Memory's Path." If you do not, this card does nothing. Banish target monster. You gain life points equal to half the level of target monster x500.

If you would put a time counter on a banished "Memory's Path," put a time counter on this card instead. Monsters you control gain ATK for each time counter on this card x100. If this card would be destroyed and sent to the Graveyard from the battlefield, banish it and put a number of time counters on a banished "Memory's Path" equal to the number of time counters that were on this card when it was destroyed.

If this card is put into your graveyard from your deck, banish this card. Then shuffle your hand and graveyard into your deck and draw six cards. If a card named "Memory's Path" is currently banished, you can remove a time counter from it.

Remove up to three time counters from a banished card named "Memory's Path."

When you activate this card, you can add 1 "Time" counter to a banished card named "Memory's Path." If you do not, this card does nothing. Negate the activation of a Spell or Trap card and destroy it. When this card it put into the graveyard from the battlefield, banish it instead.

If there is not a card named "Memory's Path" currently banished, this card does nothing. If you would take damage, instead negate that damage and put a number of time counters on this card for each 500 damage taken, rounded up. If this card is destroyed and sent to the graveyard, banish it instead and put a number of time counters on a banished "Memory's Path" equal to the number of time counters on this card when it was destroyed.

Fun Facts:
That image for "Memory of Tomorrow?" Magic: the Gathering players will recognize that as Bitterblossom. If either WotC or Rebecca Guay calls, let me know and I will change the image.

That flower in "Forgive and Forget?" A Forget-me-not. Yuk-yuk-yuk

the problem with the effect monsters is that all the counters seem to do is prevent it from being destroyed right on the spot

doesn't it do anything more?
It could. To paraphrase Mark Rosewater though, "Always start with the simplest form of a mechanic. When players get used to that, scale the complexity upwards."
