The books are amazing. My favorite would be The Final Problem.

As for Guy Richie's movies no, their just based loosely on the books. The first one is based on several books and also the young sherlock adventure tv series while the second was based on The Final Problem. Also, do check out the bbc's tv series. Their as good as the Guy's movies but was update to a modern day setting.

To be perfectly honest, many people don't know that:
Sherlock Holmes dies. Moriarty and he get into the fight seen at the end of the second movie, and they both are meant to perish at the bottom of the waterfall. Technically, it is not known if Moriarty dies, but Holmes was supposed to have. Moriarty was "infinitely more devious." He was Holmes match, and was supposed to beat him. The outcry from fans that Doyle received caused him to bring the detective back from the dead to write more adventures. Moriarty never reappears, but he is never confirmed as deceased.
I love Holmes. The books, the movies... they are both particularly entertaining to me. :D
Even if he was supposed to die, seeing the oxygen thing and then having Holmes come out of the chair in the 2nd movie was so freaking hilarious.

You misinterpreted what he said. He was saying that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle actually planed to end Sherlock's story in The Final Problem with him and Moriarty fight to the death. Ritchie's sequel was an independent movie that was based mostly on The Final problem.
No, I understood what he said, I was just bringing up a different matter.
