The Theory of the Custom Format

Recommended Posts

After the vaguely recent Topdeck n' Highlander format emerging, and the fact that I realised the other two major TCGs have their own 'custom formats', I realised that YGO has one of the most interesting engines to work with for custom formats.

They provide a great new way to play YGO, without massively changing the main engine of the game, per say.

Being able to host various tourneys (not to mention that YCMLS still has to do its side events) in completely different formats gives a new creative side.

One type of format is to simply change the banlist, but there are so many ways of basically altering the game. Some sort of compendium of YCM custom formats seems fun too.

And cube formats count. As do all custom banlist formats, so feel free to add those.

I thought I'd just quickly post a custom format so there's some sort of idea to the theory behind this all:
In Or Out

At the start of your Draw Phase, before you draw a card, flip a coin or six-sided die.

Both players agree and assign the following states of game to each side of the coin or six-sided die, in any combination (preferably as a 50/50 chance):

- In: Your turn turns as normal.
- Out: Effects that would affect your opponent or your opponent's cards (in any way) do not affect them at all. Effects that would affect you or your cards (in any way) do not affect you at all. You cannot enter your Battle Phase, and your opponent cannot attack you or monsters you control. You do not take damage from your opponent.

Game states of 'In' or 'Out' last until your next Draw Phase in which the coin/six-sided die determines a new game state for you.

Example Rulings:

- All of your opponent's cards become illegal targets for your cards. Therefore, if you have a card that would only target an opponent's card, you cannot activate it. You can still activate cards that do not need an opponent's card as a target.
- You cannot Special Summon cards like Lava Golem or Grinder Golem while in an 'Out' state.
- Simultaneous Loss only mills from your deck while you are in an 'Out' state.
- Activating Dark Hole while in an 'Out' state would destroy all of your monsters, but would not destroy your opponent's monsters. Heavy Storm works in the same way.
- You cannot activate Solemn Judgment in response to any of your opponent's cards in an 'Out' state.
- Your opponent can play cards that would otherwise be 'blocked' by Psi-Blocker or Prohibition in an 'Out' State. When the 'Out' state ends, the cards used during this period are still not affected by Prohibition when it ends.
- Cyber Dragon-esque cards cannot be Special Summoned in an 'Out' state.
- Cards whose ATK and/or DEF are dependent on an opponent's card become 0 only for the duration of the 'Out' state. External ATK gains and reductions are cancelled out upon returning however. The Wicked Avatar will not count opponent's monsters to its ATK calculation until the 'Out' state ends.
- Cards that equip to opponent's monsters in an 'Out' state are not treated so.

Most other rulings are common sense, or just the best choice in that situation.

And generally stolen from MtG. lol.
Your thoughts behind potential custom formats? Anyone up for a tourney in YCMLS based on a YCM-made custom format?
Senet Format

Cards' positions on the board are final, once placed.

A monster can only attack a monster on the same column. If the opposing monster card zone is empty, they can't attack. Unless the opponent's field is empty, of course.

Example Rulings:

- Cards like Winged Rhyno or other Senet cards can bypass this rule if their effect allows.
- Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning cannot activate its effect to attack once again if the opponent's monster card zone in the same column is unoccupied.
- However, monsters who can attack all monsters, such as Berserk Dragon, can still attack even if their opposing monster card zone is unoccupied.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! Drinking Format

- Take a drink each time you pass a border of 1000 LP.
- The loser of a Duel takes a drink for each 1000 LP the opponent had left. (in case of infinite LP: empty bottle)
- Players must take a drink for each card they side.
- When Synchro or Exceed Summoning, that player takes a drink equal to resp. half the level rounded up or the rank of that monster.
-Players may eat a poptart before their Draw if they control no monsters.
- When either of the following cards hits the field or is activated, that player must take 3 drinks; Tour Guide, Rabbit, Duality, Grapha, Brionac, Tengu, Hornet, Future Fusion.

Additional rules (they get more fun as the game progresses):
- Players must loudly declare the name of a monster they summon in an enthousiastic fashion.
- To attack, a player must stand up, raise their arms and shout like a caveman.
- Players must shout "ORE NO TURN DRAW" during their Draw Phase.
- Players must announce "I'll activate my Trap Card!" when doing this.

Senet Format.

Cards' positions on the board are final, once placed.

A monster can only attack a monster on the same column. If the opposing monster card zone is empty, they can't attack. Unless the opponent's field is empty, of course.

Example Rulings:

* "Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning" cannot activate its effect to attack once again if the opponent's monster card zone in the same column is unoccupied.

**However, monsters who can attack all monsters, such as "Berserk Dragon", can still attack even if their opposing monster card zone is unoccupied.

Unless cards like Winged Rhyno allow its position to be changed, I assume?

I already have a 160 card cube composed for using with my teammates, if you need that. but honestly, I'd scrap the other ideas because the mechanics they bring to the game don't really promote skill or seem to be that fun.
It's hard to make legitimate formats when the only good fun formats are 3+ player formats and the only good way of playing online is with DN.

The 160 card cube sounds cool, since this will be collecting cubes too.
