Forbidden Arts of the Gishki

This card actually managed to save me. How, you ask?

Here's how it happened:

Opponent was Spamurais, his field at one point was Shi En, Grandmaster and Naturia Barkion. My side had Gishki Chain + three face-down S/T

I activate Forbidden Arts, Tributing my Chain and his Barkion. Shi En negates.

Proves to be his undoing when I activated Gishki Mirror (which was also one of my face-downs), tributing Gishki Shadow from hand for Zeal Gigas. Used Gigas's effect, drew Ariel, bounced Shi En. Gigas would then kill Grandmaster.

Opponent's next turn, he sets a face-down, then ends his turn. Before I officially started my turn, I MST'd his face-down (Double-Edged Sword Technique).

He quits soon after

Does the tributes total level need to be the same as the ritual level or can it be higher?

Apparently, Gishki Ritual Spells require that the total Tributes be exactly equal to the Level of the monster you're attempting to Ritual Summon. In most other cases (with the exception of "End of the World") a Ritual Spell does not have a maximum limit to the Level. They just require just enough Tributes so that the total Levels equal at least the Level of the Ritual Monster.

Which is why the self-tribute Gishkis are so good. They don't care about the limitations.

^This!

It's too bad that there's only two such monsters, but even so, those two make up for it by Searching Evigishkis and Ritual Spells, and by being Salvage targets.

You do realize that you misplayed, right (tributing happens during resolution, not a cost. When Shi En negated, you couldn't tribute).

Well, I guess me and my opponent were incorrect about that. So, I should have kept my Chain while he kept his Barkion.

... still, I did manage to bait his Shi En into using its once-per-turn effect, which was my actual goal in activating this card in the first place. Had he not, I would have been uber-boned.
