Dwarven King
I'm surprised nobody here has mentioned anything about this. So I will. Below is a link to an update on the situation. Below that is my brief explanation. http://shine.yahoo.com/love-sex/police-ex-teacher-arrested-sex-abuse-minor-222800199.html In February, a 41 year old male who taught at a High School left his job, his wife, and his kids (one of them a 17 year old daughter who went to the school he taught at). Why? To be with one of his students that turned 18. They claim it is REAL love and that there was no sexual relationship between them until she turned 18. Naturally, her mother is furious and is trying to find proof of otherwise. There are calls and text messages between them from before she was 18. They claim there were teacher/student related. They are claiming with full confidence that NO law was broken. Currently, he is looking for a new career and she has abandoned her studies. They live in an apartment. tl;dr - A 41 year old male teacher threw his whole life away to be with an 18 year old student of his. Now, YCM, do discuss this situation and express your opinions. Is what he doing show true love? Is he breaking every line dealing with morality? Is he just a plain idiot? To be honest with you, I wanna hurt him. <_< Also, just to throw this out there, he is currently under arrest for sexually abusing a 17 year old girl in 1998. The investigation is still taking place. Miror B
When you're legal, you're legal. What else is there? Not comment on the last bit as there is nothing there to go off of.
Guest Kanade Otonashi
Until they have proof that he did it, he can't be convicted, and from the sound of that article there wasn't any proof. Is what he did to his family wrong? Sure, but... Families are destroyed all the time. It's sad, but true...
Dwarven King
I have no idea if he broke the law. So until I see proof that he did, I won't be mad at him for it. But I am pissed that he has shown lack of morales and did this to his family! D:<

Dwarven King
Seems I missed the part where he left his current family. Dick. Left his wife, kids, and teaching career. He has a daughter BARELY a year younger than the student he is in a relationship with.

Zeal Ascendant
This just feels like there's something off about it... I guess it's perfectly legal but it's certainly awkward. And that last line of the OP makes me even more uneasy :S
Frunk
Not much one can say without first-hand knowledge in situations like this, but it does seem a bit off. No question that abandoning your family is about as low as you can go without breaking the law, but that's his choice, and as for the girl, if it is real, completely mutual love honestly, then good luck to them. Insoletic
People find true love hard to believe nowadays due to our corrupt legal system. I say bravo for the both of them, and buzz off to the rest. They are legal adults and can live their lives however they want.
Βyakuya
Well, since there is no law regarding it, if he knows what he is doing, then it's okay on my terms. But if he doesn't he's gonna crack I bet.
Tentacruel
On a personal level, I wouldn't really say this is a good idea, but since I don't know him and probably never will... Have fun teacher man.
Guest Lujan Solo
They're both of legal age, so even though I find it weird, I really don't care about it. But leaving his family behind isn't right.
Dwarven King
The thing is, they went STRAIGHT into a relationship the within like days (if not the day of) her 18th birthday. That tells me that there had to be SOMETHING between them beforehand.

Vairocana
Good luck finding another teaching position, is all I'm saying. But as two consenting adults, they can do whatever they want. I would like to know the exact terms on the last bit as well. "Sexual abuse" covers consentual activities as well, when she's underage.

That is the question. Whatever the case, waiting 'till she was 18 was a good thing to do. Leaving his family...debatable...
TheComposer
He has since been arrested for a relationship with another girl he had years back. She was 17. The 18 year-old (Jordan Powers) has moved back with her mom. It was in my newspaper today, since this happened in the city I LIVE IN. ~ P O L A R I S ~
Some jurisdictions have laws which explicitly allow minors under the age of consent to engage in sexual acts with partners who are close to their age by enacting legal close in age exemptions: for instance in Canada the age of consent is 16, but there are two close-in-age exemptions: minors 14–15 may have sex with a partner who is less than five years older, and minors aged 12–13 may have sex with a partner who is less than two years older.[16] Personally, I feel as though educated 17-year-olds should be considered old enough to consent and that the only difference an extra few months will make is the difference between knowing that they're breaking the law as it is. It seems like in the initial case the girl had come out of the shower naked knowing he was there and was trying to seduce him. As for the second wave, sometimes in long-term relationships it's better for a clean break-off than for the spouses to continuously harbor festering resentment and hatred with each other. Obviously immediately taking up with his student afterwards doesn't much help his case, but I do know that some couples are together long after they both feel as though their love has died for the sake of anxiety as to how they appear to their friends, to their relatives, and most critically to their children. They maintain the illusion when they should've had a clean break-off years ago. When such weighted secrets extend throughout midlife, it only stands to reason that an explosion is inevitable. On top of that, the man in question had the initial instance with the 17-year-old 14 years ago to keep quiet about.
.Spock
Lol. She's legal, what's more to be said? People leave their families when they are unhappy frequently, albeit, not like this. However, she is now of legal age and they are both happy. If he left his family he obviously wasn't settled. There isn't even anything the Police can officially arrest him for. Correct me if I'm wrong but let's say he did talk to this 18 year old explicitly via text message or w/e when she was 17, if she doesn't want to press charges then what can they do? Yes, his morals are screwed up but it's his choice. I'm not gonna comment on the last part as there is nothing to go off.

And the 17 year old was a different situation.
