The Madolce Archetype Discussion

Recommended Posts

I did a discussion about Magicals a lil while back, thought I'd let us discuss these. We haven't done a full discussion about them since their release, have we?

So here's the few main problems with Madolces at the moment:

By continuously returning monsters from their Graveyard to the Deck, they essentially create a state where the deck is basically over 40 cards, making it tougher to draw the cards you need when you want to draw them. This is alleviated somewhat by a reusable searcher in Madolce Majoleine and in a way, Madolce Buttlerusk, but the amount of searching is limited by both's need to be Normal Summoned, unlike its comparable searcher, Elemental HERO Stratos.

There are not enough cards to fully take advantage of the monster-less Graveyard that Madolce monsters naturally create. They have Guardian Eatos, which is basically a Normal Monster after being summoned, and they have Madolce Tea Break, which is absolutely horrendous. The only card that really makes up for the lack of non-Graveyard support is Madolce Puddingcess, and even she is prone to being destroyed fairly easily.
Konami was at least smart enough to make a card meant to clean up the Graveyard. Madolce Manners is a very good follow up to Tributing a monster for Puddingcess, allowing for the player to clear their Graveyard, essentially boosting Puddingcess's ATK by 1600. And with Madolce Chateau, you even get the monster you returned back to your hand and increase that boost by 500 more, putting Puddingcess's ATK on par with XX-Saber Gottoms.

Still, the two problems remain. Because of the nature of their effects, they're inconsistent, and there are no cards that do well to get around that save the easily destroyed Madolce Chateau. Because of the lack of support based around what they do well, they are neither fast, nor strong enough to keep up with any deck in today's meta.

But, that being said, those two problems are easily alleviated, and I think Konami could easily do it in the next booster without completely breaking them. And let's face it, who doesn't want Royal cupcakes to rule the meta?

Essentially, the entire point of Madolces is having Chateau on the field at all times. With Chateau, Madolces become quite powerful, but without it, they become very mediocre VERY fast. I've noticed that Majoleine is very important in this Deck, and it's rather hard to start up without it. Mouple is fun, Puddingcess is pretty cool despite the fact she's Lv.5, Chouxvalier is extremely awesome with Mouple, Butlerusk would be a lot better if he didn't need another Madolce, and Mille-Feuille is meh. Chateau needs to be on the field AT ALL TIMES. Manners looks good on paper, but often turns out to be a dead draw. Therefore, I tend to go with things that don't hit the Grave at all. Waltz is pretty pointless. Tea Break is good in certain situations, despite its many nerfs. I actually won a game because of it. .-.

Overall, I find Madolces a very promising archetype.

A few extremely important cards for Madolces:

Ultimate Offering: Every Madolce Deck should max these out. This is what makes Madolces OTK. Also, during your opponent's turn, you can Majoleine loop for infinite searches each time they attack. :D
Battle Fader: Amazing in Madolces. Negate an attack, SS for a Puddingcess tribute next turn. Also, it doesn't go to the Graveyard.
Pot of Duality: Sort of obvious, but the fact that Madolces don't really SS a whole lot is what makes this gold.

I was debating about adding things like Bottomless and such, almost making it like a Gadget Deck, as the hand advantage concept is there. But I haven't tested it yet. Also, I don't use Eatos, and I think Madolces do better without it. Eatos just clogs up the Graveyard and a lot of times interferes with Duality.

IMO, if Madolces were to get ANY good support, they would need: 1) Like Arm said, some monster that SS's itself and is removed/shuffled when Tributed, and/or 2) a monster that allows for a second NS when NS'd. Either one would help out Madolces a lot. As far as S/Ts go... Hell, they just need good cards. Draw power is a HUGE problem in Madolces, so a card that shuffled a Madolce into the Deck to draw 2 would be divine.
