Original Egyptian Gods as Normal monsters?

Recommended Posts

I remember back when the original (illegal) Egyptian Gods were released. One of my friends once participated in a (very casual) "tournament" where the tournament head decided to allow them, with the ruling that they were Normal Monsters that required 3 Tributes. (This was like 6 years ago. Looking back, it was probably pretty stupid for him to allow them, but whatever.)

I just remembered this now, and with the three legal Gods now released for some time, I'd like to compare how they would fare against the originals in the current meta.

For reference:

Obelisk (original): Flat 4000 ATK and DEF. 3 Tributes required. No protection effects, no "Tribute 2 monsters to destroy all of opponent's monsters" effect, and (importantly) can be Special Summoned with no drawbacks.

Slifer (original): Has 1000 ATK and DEF x the number of cards in your hand. This is treated as its original ATK/DEF because of the "X000" printed on the card, and is not treated as an effect. Like Obelisk, it needs 3 Tributes, has no protection effects, has no "Opponent's monster loses 2000 ATK" effect, and can be Special Summoned with no drawbacks.

Ra (original): On the field, original ATK and DEF are treated the sum of those of the 3 Tributed monsters. If Special Summoned, original ATK/DEF is treated as 0. When not on the field, original ATK is treated as "?" and so cannot be searched by Sangan, etc. Can be Special Summoned with no drawbacks, and has no other effects or protection.

The purpose of this thread is to compare how each legal God fares against its original (using the above effects). Given that Special Summoning is very prominent in this meta, yet destruction effects seem to be equally prominent, how do they compare?

Let's do something less so, but still very stupid and compare the legal effects to the actual effects.

Here's Ra's effect:

This card cannot be Normal Summoned except by Tributing 3 monsters. The Normal Summon of this card cannot be negated. When this card is Normal Summoned, Spell Cards, Trap Cards, and the effects of other cards cannot be activated. If this card is Tribute Summoned, its original ATK and DEF become the total respective ATK and DEF of the Tributed monsters. If this card is Special Summoned from the Graveyard, it is sent to the Graveyard during the End Phase. While face-up on the field, this card is unaffected by the effects of Spell Cards, Trap Cards, and monster effects, including the effects of Obelisk the Tormentor and Slifer the Sky Dragon; except by the effects of a cards that negates one or more attacks, its control cannot be changed, and it cannot be removed from play. If this card is Special Summoned from the Graveyard:

●This card can attack all monsters your opponent controls once each. If your opponent controls no monsters after this effect resolves, it can attack your opponent directly, even if it has already attacked one or more times this turn.

●If Summoned in face-up Defense Position when a monster your opponent controls declares an attack, you can switch the attack target to this card.

●It is sent to the Graveyard during the End Phase.

The following effects may be activated at any time of the duel:

●Pay all but 1 of your Life Points to increase this card’s ATK and DEF by the total Life Points you paid. You can also Tribute all other monsters you control to increase this card’s ATK by the total ATK of the Tributed monsters. You can only use this effect once per duel.

●By discarding 1 “De-Fusion” during your turn, or sending it face-down to the Graveyard, or removing it face-down from play while there is a face-up card(s) with an effect that removes from play cards sent to the Graveyard, gain Life Points equal to this card’s ATK, then decrease its ATK and DEF by the total Life Points you gained. If you use this effect when this card declares an attack, negate that attack.

●Pay 1000 Life Points to destroy all monsters your opponent controls except during the Battle Phase.

Pretty sure they suck.

i remember back in high school, i had slifer and i used it all the time. it was fun to "use the same effects as in the anime".

compared to the new, real thing, slifer hasn't changed much (except for the immunity thing, but duh...).

obelisk has gotten worse

ra.... ra is not even worth playing. :(

This means people can literally make up effects like Obelisk literally gains infinite attack when you sacrifice 2 monsters or Ra cannot be destroyed by another god card and many more.

Someone actually did that at a local tournament of mine. Thankfully the judge decided against allowing it. Then again, they also let me use Snipe Hunter's effect on my opponent's turn back when I was a complete moron (but at least I no longer used 50-card themeless highlander).
