"Wu's parents decided to withhold news of both the death of her grandparents and of her mother's long battle with breast cancer until after she won the 3-meter springboard in London so as to not interfere with her diving career."

I'm so confused. Winning really means that much now?

Discuss winning.

Inb4 Charlie Sheen.

Wow it depends, I say yes I will/ would have done the same for my self and others for I see it's best because others would not want to hold you back, would they? Like my mother said if its something's you love doing she would not want to be a new wall in life, i agree.

For a competition of that magnitude and for something that is out of her control, I would say it was the right thing to do. I'm sure her parent's would have loved her just as much if she didn't win. She probably wouldn't have wanted to compete at all if she had known about it.

"Now there seems to be a backlash against the win-at-all-costs mentality after the revelations about Wu followed fierce criticism from a national newspaper when a 17-year-old weightlifter failed to medal."

Fail to medal = you're bad. =/

There was an Olympic Article on an Olympian whose mother had died before the competition, yet she managed to persevere and get the gold. It all depends on the relationship, emotional strength, and future outcome predictions. Maybe what their parents did was a scumbag move or a save, but I'd just stick with it and have something to win for; It's when winning is actually worth something.

Also there's another story about how there's a Chinese swimmer who's dominating like a boss and now everyone is accusing him of being on steroids or whatever. Sore losers...

Meh, it's pretty common Eastern culture. I'm not surprised, because that's really just how it works.

I mean, a lot of western athletes hire a psychologist exactly for things like this, but it's much less common with eastern athletes. Pretty much that's your answer, guys.

Sorry. Somebody had to.

Personally, winning is only something that happens if you get first in something. There's no real accomplishment from it; it's just another way to boost your ego.
