There are very few cards that let you attack the opponent directly (Bar the Watt archtype) so this cards effect is virtually useless.

Okay I think I get what you are trying to say with this card. If this card is on the field and your opponent attacks it, the attack is change to a direct attack instead, right? Going on with the assumption that I am correct, here is how the card's effect should be worded.

If this monster is Targeted for an attack, the attack becomes a direct attack, instead. When your opponent deals damage to your Life Points by a Direct Attack: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Increase this monster's ATK equal to the amount of Life Points lost, then gain Life Points equal to half that amount.

Why would your opponent attack this monster then? There are plenty of easier ways to get rid of it, whether that is to stop its summoning through solemn or destroy with Dark Hole or Torrential, it would be a whole lot better than attacking it 3 times and each time being foiled while only doing half damage and powering this monster. I like the idea but it needs work.

It's quite true. Also this card is not unlike Fiend Sanctuary your opponent wouldn't attack it they would destroy it with a card effect instead. If you need help revising the card you may want to look at the effects of those 2 monsters mentioned (Golden Apple and Fiend Sanctuary).
