Tournament report. First tourny of the new format!

Recommended Posts

OK so this is probably going to be quite a large chunk of writing, so inb4tl;dr, but I went to a tournament today and it was obviously the first of the new format since it is September 1st. It was a thing called a Summer Cup that you have to qualify for by basically winning a qualifier out of the many that had been held through the Summer. There were some good players there, including the 2011 UK Nats winner, so it wasn't just like a locals. It has been really informative about what decks will and will not be good next format, which is why I thought YCM might find it interesting. The results are kind of strange. This is a link to the deck I was using:
Against Dark Wold.
Game 1: I lose because I have no outs to Grapha. Can't remember too much about this game apart from that I reached for the Side Deck quite desperately.
Game 2: Debunk is the best side-deck card ever. 2 Debunk on 2 Grapha gets me game.
Game 3: I drew a pretty bad hand, and ended up having to Creature Swap (I sided 2) a Tour Bus for a Beige and kept beating down with 1900 ATK. This actually got me game along with Debunk-ing Grapha because it went to time.
Oh, and I did all this against Skill Drain all 3 games.
1-0
Me vs. Six Sams
Game 1: He opens up an explosive field which I do not have Dark Hole to stop. Agents set up too slowly to get round first turn explosion.
Game 2: More of the same. I didn't draw any of the cards I sided or any outs really to an explosive field.
1-1
Me vs. Machina Gadget
This guy was one of two Machina Gadget players there, and he was just some random kid, but I was still worried because first turn Fortress + Gearframe is too hard to get past.
Game 1: He goes Gearframe into Fortress. Does the same thing next turn and does 8k damage.
Game 2: I can't remember much, but it had something to do with Gachi Gachi and Zenmaines.
Game 3: I won this game with BLS and Kristya basically. It went to time and I got him down to 0 on the last turn of the game.
2-1
Me vs. Gravekeepers
This was probably the easiest game of the day, somehow.
Game 1: Can't remember much apart from that he Starlighted my Heavy. Then I got round Stardust with BTH and won with Hyperion.
Game 2: He went first and set 4 backrows and a Recruiter with Necrovalley. He was then forced to Dark Bribe a Mind Control which was his only out to Heavy. I activate Heavy and Summon Hyperion and he scoop phases.
3-1
Me vs. Wind-up
I was surprised to see this deck being so present and so potent with only 1 Zenmaity. I guess the OTK is still good and it can loop 3 cards, but it did take me by surprise.
Game 1: I won this one. This is all I can remember. TT had a lot to do with it.
Game 2: This was such a bad game, but everyone else found it hilarious. I was sitting on an awesome hand but then he goes D Fissure and I'm like o0. I also epic misplayed by misreading Temtempo. Twice. Yeah... Didn't realize it was permanent. Also didn't realize it was chainable. I'm such a bad player XD I still managed to just about win with Hyperion and stuff. I had card advantage for most of the game and was in a strong position a lot of the time.
4-1
Me vs. Rabbit
I don't like Rabbit, but I was mildly surprised to see it doing well with only 2 TGU and 2 Rabbit.
Game 1: I lost this game because Dolkka. Negating Venuses all around. Also Rai-oh stopping Gachi Gachi.
Game 2: Don't quite remember how I won this, but I did so it's all good.
Game 3: Basically won this by sacking BLS and Kristya and attacking over an attack position Zenmaines and a set Kabasaurus. I had card advantage for most of the game but that is what won me it in the end.
5-1

Me vs. Six Sams
This is the same guy (and only guy) who beat me in Swiss, so when I found out I was playing him I just sighed.
Game 1: We did the die roll and everything (and he won) and when he drew his opening hand there was side-deck stuff from his last game. We started again and I somehow managed to convince him to redo the die roll as well, and I won it :) So I managed to win this game by making him lose all his advantage trying to get rid of Zenmaines, then just attacking with things and stuff.
Game 2: He didn't get a crazy hand this time and I drew outs to stuff. He lost all his advantage on first turn plays and I managed to push for game fairly easily.

Me vs. Six Sams (again ffs...)
Game 1: He didn't know what deck I was playing and didn't even after this game had finished. The only monster I drew was Gorz which saved me from getting OTK'd. But I made a small misplay which cost me the game basically. I wasted all my advantage trying to get rid of Shi En and then he just made Enishi and bounced back the Shi En that I Reborned and I couldn't get past Enishi or anything.
Game 2: All I could really do was make stall out and make him use cards to get get rid of my wall cards. He basically just swarmed the field and got rid of everything I had. The game got to a point where if he had LSS Enishi he would win and if he didn't I would win. He had 1 left in his deck and he either drew it or had it in his hand. Yay. I saw it and just scoop phased.
So I didn't make top 2, but I got a Tour Guide and a Miracle Contact from prize support so not bad. It also told me a lot about this format and the decks that will be good. Top 8 was as follows:
3 Wind-up
2 Six Samurai
1 Rabbit
1 T.G. Skill Drain
1 T.G. Agent (Me!)

There were a fair amount of Dark World players there and none of them topped, so all the Dark World players and myself have concluded that the deck sucks. Wind-up was probably there because it was what people had left over from last format. Six Sams are just an amazing deck and I think they will do very well this format. Rabbit was slightly rogue as was T.G. Skill Drain, but they might be underdog decks that might top some big events. Agents are a really awesome deck that only has the one problem of slow set-up, which is why the Samurai match-up is so bad. If you main-deck a Veiler or two and make a Samurai-focused Side-Deck though, then that shouldn't be a problem.

The top 2 was Wind-up vs. Samurai, but I didn't stay to see who won.

I know this is only 1 tournament so we can't make assumptions, but what does YCM think of these results? Dark World are over-hyped too much is what me thinks.

I totally expected wind ups to stay/be the best deck.

They still have amazing shark magician, tour guide, and rat plays.

Yeah, and with less and less main-decked Veilers around these days, they have a lot less to worry about in game 1. Still, in the game I played against them, I did notice they are definitely not what they were. If you haven't been looped, you can stop their plays a lot more easily, just with TT or something. The deck dies to TT so easily.

No Hero players? Odd. Interesting report, I can't wait for Sunday when I go to locals. Also regionals Sept 8.
