The Dark Knight
So my laptop, after suffering through numerous overheatings and even a blue screen at one point, all without ever losing data, is finally beginning to show signs that it's dying. I've had it for a few years now and recently it has started overheating more frequently than ever before. I have a cooling platform for it and even that isn't enough. And so, I have decided to build a desktop! With the help and guidance of many GTZ'ers I was able to come up with a list of what I will be getting with prices and links. I'll put it all in a spoiler so you guys and gals can take a look. [spoiler=Warning! I've had two throughout my life. The first was a terrible desktop that is now so outdated it doesn't even value for scrap. The second was this laptop that I'm on right now. Getting this new desktop might actually help extend my laptop's life span, since I won't be using it as much and I can probably clear ALOT of the files on it after the desktop is finished and ready to go. So anyway, I'm curious if there are any PC buffs on this site that know a thing or two about this, maybe even built a computer or two in their time. My extremely limited knowledge comes only very recently from other people so I'm open to recommendations. The desktop is going to be used for gaming purposes primarily, as you may have been able to deduce, but I also am planning on using it for graphic designing and casual use as well. That's about all I have to say. If you have any questions ask! Also, if you have knowledge in the subject, please recommend stuff or make some comments or something. Either point me in the right direction or confirm that I'm already headed there. It'd mean alot to me.

Cin
So you're building a desktop with Windows 7 in a month before Windows 8? Nice size on the harddrive since the standards are still between 500GB and 1TB (well for laptops anyway). Nice RAM I'm happy to settle for 6GB though, I don't play many games so I wouldn't need so much RAM.

Plus, Windows 7 will still support most games for a while.

As in, just put the disc in your DVD drive and play. Just a rumor, but that might affect your decision if it somehow ends up being true.

It would mean people would skip the console and just go for a strong PC to play 360 titles on as well as PC titles. If it does happen I'd be very interested, obviously, but it probably won't. Which is kind of disappointing, now that I think about it, but understandable. EDIT: Considering getting something to help cool the processor based on recommendations from GTZ. Thoughts? Chaotix®
Windows 8 can't play xbox games, and your parts are decent, so your visuals and framerates will sh*t all over xbox games anyway. You've got a pretty good cpu so you don't need an aftermarket cooler unless you want to overclock it heaps for the bragging rights. Only thing is if you want to be playing the latest PC games on max settings I'd consider forking out a bit extra on a 500 series gpu instead of the 480. EDIT: don't buy windows 7, use : http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/release-preview until it expires (will expire around january I think) and just buy windows 8 when it's out. Cin
End of October around the 26th I believe I have no idea of the cost, since I'm going to buy a laptop with it preinstalled. Which is why I'm nursing my laptop through it's last month and a half, by barely playing anything on it.
Chaotix®
That's awesome yin, the upgrade takes a while to get used to but windows 8 is really much better than the previous ones.
