Yes Soul Taker is better in a lot of situations...but Smashing still has its place in the game IMO Discuss this oldie but goodie YCM.
ihop
Soul Taker is just better because you can choose and it also makes stuff miss timing. I'd always run 3 Soul Taker before I even consider this.

ihop
The Shining, Lightpulsar, a handful more obscure ones like Dupe Frog.
Not-so-Radiant Arin
Both Soul Taker and Smashing Ground have unique pros and cons as far as one-for-one removal. In some situations, if you don't mind giving your opponent the extra LP, then Soul Taker works wonders because, as said before, it causes cards to miss timing, and you can choose which monster to destroy. Smashing Ground, while not as versatile, can still bring down a majority of monsters with very high ATK and high DEF (D-HERO Defender, anybody?). For my one-for-one removal, I always use Raigeki Break for some reason. It's good to fill up your Graveyard, so I guess that's why I run it over Soul Taker and Smashing Ground. -Griffin
Smashing Ground doesn't target, which is nice.
Zowayix
@Devil's Advocate: Raigeki Break isn't 1-for-1, it's a -1 because of the discard.
