A death march is essentially a long walk in nothing but rags and bare feet. They must have lived through history. Many infamous people today can still do bad things while those that are dead cannot. This allows for a more standard nomination rather than hearing about his latest tenures and saying "Oh wait look what he just did!"

Expansionism is bad, because it kills people. Interventionism isn't expansionism. Imperialism is. Genghis Khan was a marauding psychopath. Justifying his actions is like writing Ted Bundy's eulogy.
