Great Unclean One: VK
No need to introduce the man, we all know why he's so amazing and awesome. Anyhow, as I was being my usual angry self, I was asked by someone why is this guy so important. I looked at this person and was nearly about to laugh. I mean, who hasn't heard of Carl Sagan? Well turns out some chicks hate science, knowledge, and awesome scientists. I quickly told her to leave my workshop and never return. Sadly my workshop is also my living room so it didn't work. That and apparently Cosmos is getting a second season with DeGrasse hosting it and Seth McFarlene, yes the guy who made Family Guy and American Dad is help producing it. Anyhow, let's discuss how this generation seems to be forgetting about science.
Tentacruel
Maybe people are forgetting about science because the people that are into science go apeshit whenever someone shows any apathy towards it? Just sayin' But yeah man, stars, they're like, cool and stuff. Smart guy with a kewl TV-show. Not sure what Seth McFarlene has to do with astronomy, but whatevs.

Bahamut - Envoy of the End
Reads the ongoing conversation between Tentasparkle and Mr A and wonders how the hell they managed to get on that tangent. Anyway, actually going to comment on topic. Never heard of this guy in Britain, assume he's something like our Proffessor Brian Cox or something. Major science breakthroughs still make the news and stuff, it's just not high in the minds of people in their everyday lives. Quality (or lack of) schooling in the subject and it's percieved uncoolness may also be offputting (although I like messing around with chemicals and weights and things)

FTW (For The Wynn)
I actually hadn't heard of Carl Sagan until relatively recently. He is certainly a man of great accomplishment. However, before this degenerates into yet another Science vs Religion debate, I think that people should recall that Sagan was just as prone to bash atheism as he was religion. IIRC, his views on both subjects are that neither should claim that they are right, because neither knows for sure what is right, and that both are usually ignorant. From Wikipedia: "The idea that God is an oversized white male with a flowing beard who sits in the sky and tallies the fall of every sparrow is ludicrous. But if by God one means the set of physical laws that govern the universe, then clearly there is such a God. This God is emotionally unsatisfying... it does not make much sense to pray to the law of gravity." On atheism, Sagan commented in 1981: "An atheist is someone who is certain that God does not exist, someone who has compelling evidence against the existence of God. I know of no such compelling evidence. Because God can be relegated to remote times and places and to ultimate causes, we would have to know a great deal more about the universe than we do now to be sure that no such God exists. To be certain of the existence of God and to be certain of the nonexistence of God seem to me to be the confident extremes in a subject so riddled with doubt and uncertainty as to inspire very little confidence indeed" There are probably a great many well respected and intelligent people I could list that most people here would not know. That doesn't necessarily mean that you are stupid, it merely means that you just haven't received education in that area before.

Mehmani
Sagan was an agnostic because he felt there was no compelling evidence for either side. Science believes in the Occam's Razor principle - i.e. we go for the theory that is the most convincing and has the most evidence. The theory that the Universe was created by an interstellar explosion billions of years ago has more credence than the theory of creationism, therefore, as a scientist, you are inclined towards the former explanation. Sagan said what he said to be telegenic, I think.

~ P O L A R I S ~
Agnosticism lacks testosterone. What's truly "ludicrous" is for one to suppose that they could scientifically prove the existence OR the inexistence of God. They should spare themselves the angst and make an unscientific commitment to whatever side they feel is the most practical given their context. ?someone?
So, I was talking to this chick, and I was like "Hey, you know David Hasselhoff?" and she was like "No." so I told her to get out of my house. I guess some people just don't appreciate cool cars, ridiculous hair and terrible acting. Seriously, though, Carl Sagan is cool. I'm not that into science though, so I don't know much about him. CMRenji
Wait, Seth MacFarlane is producing it? I always loved watching Cosmos and learning new things. And I myself plan to become an astrophysicist.
