Prologue

The story is set in Dominopolis , located somewhere in America, probably in the east. The year, also vague, is 100 years after the Battle City tournament held in Old Domino City. 28 years before the story’s time, Kaiba Corp, one of the largest gaming companies, was inherited to Seto Kaiba II from his father, Ryo Kaiba, grandson of Seto Kaida. Seto, like his great grandfather, was a very self-righteous man and would do anything to suit his own interest. Kaiba Corp’s greatest competitor was Industrial Illusions. The grandson of Maximillion Pegasus, Franz Pegasus, was its president. Franz had a daughter named Cecelia.

Seto set out to create a secret relationship with Cecelia in hopes of getting information about Industrial Illusions and attempting to create an advantage between the two rivaling companies. Cecelia fell in love with Seto soon after, ignorant to his true intentions about the relationship. Seto, without even realizing it, fell in love with Cecelia as well, despite his unnatural ambitions. The two decided to get married. Franz found out about the relationship and was extremely angered, demanding that Cecelia break off the relationship immediately. Cecelia, blind by her love for Seto, denied her father’s request and ran away. Franz chased after her in his car. Being an extremely wealthy man, Franz was accustomed to being driven everywhere by paid drivers. However, because of his rage, Franz drove himself trying to stop the relationship. Because of his lack of experience, Franz had trouble controlling the car and crashed. He was found dead. Franz had created no will and his only living heir was Cecelia. She inherited Industrial Illusions and became the president. After grieving her father’s death, Cecelia and Seto were married. Seto, astonished at how well things turned out, declared it was fate that brought these two powerful billionaires together. The two decided to merge their companies and created Kaiba Illusions, which became the largest and most successful gaming company ever, and second largest company in the world (second only to Wal-Mart).

Kaiba Illusions revolutionized the gaming world. Gaming became something much more than just games, but something of honor and respect, something that took hold of the world and became one of the essentials to life. Duel Monsters became the most popular game to ever exist in history, and became one of the largest elements of American and world culture. Kaiba Illusions had invested a lot of money in a project they labeled the Shadow Duels project, in which they sought to unite the living world with a mythical world called the Spirit World. Seto and his wife were well aware of the existence of the monster world and knew that their great grandfathers, Seto Kaiba and Maximillion Pegasus, had seen and visited it. Seto wanted to make Duel Monsters more interactive than ever before by creating real, rather than holographic, monsters. The Shadow Duels project was successful and the shadow games had finally been resurrected after being dead for millennia. Kaiba Illusions stretched its powerful hands toward the government, of which they lobbied tirelessly in an effort to legalize this new type of dueling, despite the dangers that it exhibits. They succeeded, and thus the age of the Shadow Games had become a reality. A person who engaged in duels was considered a hero and was respected by his fellow kinsmen. To become a duelist was what children fantasized about. Many companies around the world would invest in Duel Monsters players and one who would be successful in the game would become extremely wealthy through different companies investing in that person.

After 8 years of marriage, Seto had a secret intermarital affair with a woman named Julia Youngblood. The affair was kept a secret and soon after, Seto broke off the affair. Unbeknownst to Seto, Julia was pregnant with his child. She was not able to contact him after he broke off the affair. Julia died giving birth to her child, a boy in which she named him Elias, whom became an orphan. Elias was taken in by his grandparents, who had only recently found out of the child, and did not know of the affair or of Seto. Elias lived with them for his young years. His grandfather was an old Duel Monsters champion and taught him much about the game. Elias felt like Duel Monsters was in his blood and he wanted to become the King of Games.

Chapter One

“ You beat me again! Drat, I must be getting really old, I’ve lost my touch. Good job, boy,” said Elias’ grandfather.
“Hah! You got greedy on the field, that’s why! That was a complete waste of Monster Reborn, if you ask me,” Elias replied.
“My deck is old, that’s why. You kids and your fancy new Xyzs. I remember when all we had were just Synchros. Ah, those were the days.”
“Oh please, granddad, I’m playing Plants! How can a Deck be more Synchro-oriented?!”
“Oh, Elias, that reminds me. I got a call yesterday while you were out from your friend Aspin. He says he wants to talk to you immediately,” Elias’ grandmother tells him as she’s bringing them some lunch.
“Yesterday? Why didn’t you tell me earlier?!”
“Oh, I guess I forgot. Hehehe, I’m old you know!” said Elias’ grandmother.
Elias took his deck and his food and went to his room upstairs. He went to his phone and dialed Aspin’s number. The phone rang and someone picked it up.
“Hello?” said someone on the other line
“Aspin? It’s me Elias. Sorry, my grandma forgot to tell me you called. Did you get the cards? What about the tournament information? Please tell me you got the duel disks! Aspin, please tell me you got the blue one! If it’s that crappy red one, I swear to God!” Elias screamed.
“Calm down, Elias. Geez, you know I’m doing this as a favor, a please and thank you wouldn’t kill you. Anyway, I couldn’t get the cards, but I did however get the duel disks and info. And yes, it’s blue, hehehe” said Aspin.
“(I did say please, though). Yes! Thanks, Aspin, you’re my savior..! Phew, I’m so glad it wasn’t that crappy red one. Slifer Red, why would anyone want that?”
“Hey, that’s not nice. I got Slifer Red…”
“Oh... Well I guess they’re not that bad. It doesn’t matter, I’ll come over as soon as possible,” Elias said. He then looked at his plate of rice and heard his stomach gargle. “On second thought, maybe after lunch hehehe!”
Elias departed to his friend’s house running. On his way there, he met Berney Reynolds, a friend from his college, running the opposite way.
“Oh hey, Berney, what’s up?” Elias greeted.
“Elias!” Berney nearly tripped “I, uh, I was just headin’ home. I entered the locals for Kaiba Illusions’ new tournament, but lost to my first opponent. I lost to a friggin Rabbit! Like seriously! Dino rabbits, how is that even a thing?! I swear if I ever see a man play Bunny again, bam! Right in the kisser! Oh boy I’m really riled up! BERNEY MAD!” said Berney.
“Calm down there Berney, you’re turning into the Hulk”
Berney stared at Elias. He squinted at him, as if trying to fathom what he was saying. “Thank you, you too” he said after a minute had passed.
“Ok… Anyway, I was gonna join the tournament too. In fact, I’m heading to Aspin’s now to talk to him about it, wanna come with?” Elias offered.
Berney started squinting again. “Hold on, just hold on! Since when did you play Duel Monsters?”
“Since ever? Berney, we used to play together all the time. I basically taught YOU how to play!”
“Oh… Oh ya, I forgot! Hahaha, those were fun times! You’re pretty good; I think you almost beat me once. Yep, you were my favorite student.”
“Berney, I think you’re confused. You’ve NEVER beat me. Ever. Anyway, let’s go.” And they both headed to Aspin’s house.
Elias and Berney reached Aspin’s house. Elias knocked on the door.
“Who is it?” said someone behind the door.
“It’s me, Elias. I’m with Berney,” replied Elias.
The door opened and a woman dressed in a red dress came out. “Why hello there, Elias! It’s been quite a while hasn’t it! How is your grandmother?
“Hello Mrs. Magnus, my grandma is fine. Can I see Aspin?”
“Sure! Come in, I’ll get you some tea. Oh! Berney! I forgot you were here. How are you?”
“Mrs. Magnus, ma’am, I am in amazingly fit shape. Thank you for asking” replied Berney, somewhat confused of the question.
“Ok… come in, boys!” She led them inside. “Aspin! Your friends are here!”
“Ah, Elias, you finally arrive!” Aspin says as he comes to greet the visitors. “Come to my room, I’ll show you the goods.”
Aspin led them to his room and showed Elias the duel disk.
“Oh. My. God. I finally have it! Yes! Finally, I can enter tournaments and prove myself! Yes! You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this moment, my dear Aspin! Rejoice!” Elias jumped up and down.
“Well, you’re welcome. It’s not the best duel disk, but it’s definitely one of the better models. I spent a lot of time trying to get that, so be grateful. You’re lucky I have so many connections,” said Aspin. “Oh, Berney, you’re here too. How did the locals go?”
“I’m scared of rabbits…” said Berney.
“He lost first round to Dino Rabbits,” said Elias.
“It’s the ears. They just scare me,” Berney, continuing, not listening.
“Hahaha, ya, the son of the legendary Rescue Cat strikes hard, doesn’t he?” laughed Aspin.
“Speaking of which, show me the tournament details.” Elias said.
“Oh right. Here,” Aspin gave Elias the tournament rules. Elias read:

“Kaiba Illusions’ Battle City Cup Rules

Waning: The dueling taken place will use Shadow Duel technology, which can be very dangerous. If you do not seek to take the risk of being injured, please do not sign up for the tournament. Kaiba Illusions takes no responsibility for any injury or death that occurs in the tournament.
You must be 18+ to enter. To qualify, you need an official Kaiba Illusions Duel Disk of at least version 5.0. Your deck must consist of at least 40 legal cards. The tournament will be a single elimination tournament. During the tournament, if you lose the match, like the classic Battle City tournament, you will forfeit your rarest card to your opponent. To register, you must go online and create an account.
The duels will be administered by top Duel Monsters judges. Each player will start with 8000 Life Points. The first to meet create a win condition or reduce the Life Points of the opposing player to 0 wins the duel. During this tournament, Extra Deck monsters may attack the turn they are Summoned. All spell cards except Quick-Play will be Speed Spell 1 and thus must only be activated during your turn. All official rules apply.
The winner of the tournament will receive $350,000 and a very rare card. He will also meet with Kaiba Illusions’ president Seto Kaiba…”

Elias didn’t read anymore. “That’s it? Psh, this’ll be a piece of cake. Did you register me?”
“Yes, and myself as well. So you really ready? If you are, let’s have a duel in my backyard. I wanna see your new deck.” Said Aspin.
“Let’s do it!” and they went outside and started the duel.
“I’ll start things off,” said Aspin. “I Summon Gladiator Beast Lanista in Attack Position!” As Aspin placed his card on his duel disk, a light began to manifest. The light suddenly began to take a shape. The light changed colors and shaped itself to a human-like being with a bird-like face. The creature manifested itself and roared, shaking the trees behind Elias. Its stench could be smelled miles away. A bright white chain also manifested itself and attached to Aspin’s heart and the creature. Elias was amazed. “I then set two card face-down and end my turn.” As Aspin placed two cards on the side of his duel disk, two large card-like materials manifested themselves on the field.
“Man, that’s awesome. Heh, it’s my turn now! Hmm, okay I’ll set this card and one monster,” Elias said as 2 cards manifested on the field. “I end my turn.”
“I draw!” Aspin looked at his hand. “Heh, I guess you’re not that smart, are you, to Set a monster against Glads!” Aspin began to think ‘hmm, that set backrow might be a trap. I better not Summon anything in case it’s Torrential Tribute. I’ll bait it out whatever it is with Lanista, she’s not important.’ Aspin smiled, “alright Lanista, attack!” Lanista lifted her giant spear and flung it at the face-down monster. A white dog revealed itself from the face-down card and was struck by Lanista’s spear. “Oh no! Ryko!”
“Yes! Ryko’s effect activates and I’m able to destroy one of your cards! I choose your left face-down!” Shouted Elias. Ryko, bleeding to death, granted his master one last wish and turned into a beam of light, destroying the set Solemn Warning with himself. A small explosion occurred that pushed Aspin to the ground. Elias then sent Dark Hole, Spore, and Effect Veiler to the Graveyard from the top of his Deck.
“Fool! You should’ve destroyed my Lanista! Now she gets her effect!” Aspin laughed “Hmm, clearly his face-down is nothing or else he would’ve activated it. I don’t think I need to destroy it with Bestiari. What did he mill?” Aspin looked at his log. He was astonished. “Spore! He’s playing Plants! Ahahaha! Plants, I haven’t seen that deck in years, does he really hope to win the tournament with this deck? Well, I’m sorry, Elias, but that Spore must go…” Aspin looked at Lanista. “Time to tag out, Lanista, return to the Deck!” Lanista nodded and dematerialized. “I Summon Retiari!” Retiari materialized on the field. “Retiari’s effect, I banish your Spore!”
“Noo! My Spore! You heartless monster, it never even got a chance to show itself!” Elias remarked.
“Spore? You’re really playing that lame Plants deck, Elias? Hahaha!” laughed Berney.
“Yes. I love plants, and you’ll see why they’re good. Just because Xyzs exist doesn’t make them any less viable. You’ll see!” Elias declared
“I end my turn,” Aspin said.
“My turn!” Elias drew a card. “Damn you, Aspin. Banishing poor Spore. Oh well, I still got this play.” “I Summon Junk Synchron! Now I activate his effect to bring back my Effect Veiler! This activates my Doppelwarrior’s effect which lets me Special Summon him. Now I Synchro with Doppel and Junk!” Bright lights filled the sky and blue circle began to surround Doppelwarrior as he was ready to become part of the Synchro Summon “I Summon T.G. Hyper Librarian! Now, my Doppel’s effect activates and I get 2 Doppel Tokens! I again Synchro, using one of the Doppel tokens and my Veiler, to Synchro Summon for Formula Synchron! Now the effects of both Formula and Librarian activate, allowing me to draw 2 cards! Librarian, it’s time to avenge your fallen comrades, Ryko and Spore, destroy his Retiari!”
T.G. Librarian grew a nasty smirk. He began to walk casually toward Retiari. Retiari was scared and turned to Aspin and got on his knees, “please master, save me.” Aspin could do nothing but watch helplessly as the Librarian arrived and pointed his finger at Retiari. “Time to die” Librarian said and created a white laser from his finger which shot deep into Retiari’s heart. Retiari gushed with blood and fell to the ground, dead. The white chain then shook and Aspin felt a tremendous pain. It was his penalty for letting his servant die. Aspin fell to the floor and screamed in pain. His Life Points were reduced by 1200. Retiari’s corpse dematerialized and was sent to the Graveyard.
“Retiari…” Aspin thought as he was on the ground in pain. “Mark my words, Elias, I will have revenge for Retiari’s death!”
