Kyng's Old Account
So, because of Examinations, I've lost both of my potential Snow Days. Yay.I'm sure my British comrades are very well aware our Exams often occur (currently) after the Christmas holiday, but the A-Level students will now have our exams only in June.I find the idea of Exams, though the concept necessary, as ridiculous. They act as a permanent marker of our intelligence, however what people (and often employers) often forget is that Exams only portray your knowledge of what was on that particular paper in that stage of your life.Surely, there's a better way of determining our intelligence in a more consistent mannerism? The future has infinite possibilities.[hr]Discuss Examination Dates, and exams in general.
ListenToLife
Yeah, timings are a bit terrible. I'm supposed to have a Chemistry Exam for about half the total Chemistry grade tomorrow. Hmmm, I wonder how that'll work out, with nearly a foot of snow outside my front door. :/ I guess there is a lot to be improved with things such as Exams and the like, but there really isn't that much of an other option. IQ tests could be possible - they are more accurate than people think, and are actually pretty useful for employability; people with higher IQs tend to be more successful and lower IQs tend to be less - but people dont trust them, and even the mere mention of a high IQ tends to anger people. It's also at a bad time really - Teens dont really think like adults, and the little things become priorities in teenage years. We dont realise how important these things are for our future, and what happens when we f*ck them up, like most of us end up doing. (However, if we did them as an Adult, we'd be less successful, because we learn better as a child. So basically, life doesn't like us. )
LeguBrit
Surely, there's a better way of determining our intelligence in a more consistent mannerism? There is two: CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT COURSEWORK OT: last Friday I had 3 exams and a termly assessment. Discuss THAT.
ihop
My only January exam was last Thursday so I'm making the most of my snow day, but I have pretty much all my GCSEs crammed into May and June. But personally I see nothing wrong with them and there's not really a better way to easily judge people's ability.
ListenToLife
There is two: CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT COURSEWORK OT: last Friday I had 3 exams and a termly assessment. Discuss THAT It's debatable. Some people prefer Exams over Coursework, some prefer coursework over exams. I've always done better in exams than Coursework, I know people who have always done better in coursework than exams. It's not necessarily fair. Because a lot of the time, people need the pressure of an exams to show how they work under stress, coursework/controlled assessment dont recreate that as much. It's also been said that Girls seem to do better with Courseworks than exams, while Guys do better with exams, on average. So to only do one would be rather unfair to one of the sexes. Which is why most courses have a balance of both.
LeguBrit
Then their teacher should make a well thought out decision with the student about if they want to do Coursework or Exams and then tell management.
ListenToLife
That's hard to do when there's about 150-200 hundred people per school year group per school. >.> But yeah, I see your point. But really, it's probably best that they do both, for it allows future employers to see if they work well in both situations, and doesn't hand them an easy route. Great Unclean One: VK
I hate tests, quizzes, and exams. I could do well in class or in such topics, but when I get tested on it, oh boy. My palms get sweaty, hands shaky, legs jumpy, and my mind comes to a blank even if I studied for weeks.
ListenToLife
^^See, I'm the opposite. I hate classes, and I hate listening. Because I prefer to learn through the stress of testing, of using information I am given. If, during a lesson, I am not given some sort of test or set of questions, what I learnt will generally drift away. Hence why, during exam times, I make a note of all the stuff that I've been taught that I wasn't quizzed on, then quiz myself or get someone else to quiz me later on.
