Modern-Day Yu-Gi-Oh! Story?

Recommended Posts

So, YCM, I just had an idea for a story that takes place roughly in the same universe as the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga from Yugi's solving of the Millennium Puzzle through the Ceremonial Battle against Atem.

What I've got in mind is to write a story about a group of young adults (go figure) who are caught up in the American craze that surely would've swept the world over after Yugi won the Duelist Kingdom and Battle City tournaments, and who want to join the Professional Duelists' Association (or something).

What basically happens is that twetnysomething Desmond and his band of slackers who are living in Oakland, California get interested in Duel Monsters after Industrial Illusions started a branch of their company in San Francisco, immediately following Yugi's win over Pegasus. Things really took off when-- upon the conclusion of the Battle City Tournament, which was broadcast live all over the world-- Desmond was with his best friend of many years, Francis, at the local pub. Desmond and Francis were both fascinated with Duel Monsters as it was, and decided that they would join the PDA and live the life of champions.

Desmond, Francis and their friends all tag along on the cross-country adventure which involves stumbling upon a terrible evil, discovering themselves and each other all the while (even making new friends along the way.

I don't claim to be doing anything super-special or novel, but I like it! I'd appreciate feedback on the idea and suggestions to improve it, if you've got any. Thanks!

So what you're saying is you want to write a generic Yu-Gi-Oh! Fan-Fiction using ideas that have been implemented, created, and re-hashed so many times that it would almost feel like a re-run of every Fan-Fic written on this site mashed and jumbled into one big block full of Mary Sue's?

Alright, sorry, it's great to see an aspiring writer in this section and I'm definitely willing to help if you want some ideas, but if you post something that generic you're going to get torn to shreds and I'd like to be able to prevent that.

Try and re-invent your idea somehow so that it doesn't feel like such a bland one.

I say that, as a twist, you should make it so that Desmond and co. lose more duels than they win, and they only stop the bad guys because they end up punching them in the face.

That would be anti-climactic, honestly.

There really isn't much to go about with this story unless you can think so far outside the box that you can make the story interesting enough for people to keep reading.

However, I can help you out somewhat. Here's a few suggestions you can consider:

  1. Create a new type of Monster card (Much like Synchros, Exceeds, etc.)
  2. Have Desmond hear voices in his head that creates slapstick-style plot convenience on occasion (Such as getting a headache from the voices and accidentally coming across something plot-related)
  3. Involve other dimensions with this "new evil" (Be creative though. Don't just include the Shadow Realm and hope for the best)
  4. Involve custom created cards (Made by you, of course) that either advance the plot or are a necessity to the plot
  5. Include a specific Set (Like Arcana Force and what not) that acts as a catalyst for the plot (Leading back to the previous idea)

Hope these ideas help you out. PM me if you want more help. From what you proposed and what ideas I brought up, I sort of have an idea of my own (But I won't think about it yet).
