I wonder if it would be possible for the monster to attack itself, as silly as that sounds.

No, it can't attack itself. I recall this was used in the first series' Ceremonial Duel. Green Gadget was to attack directly, but was countered with Stronghold the Moving Fortress. Oddly, this still caused Yugi to take the damage.

I didn't think it would, but when you think of what the written restrictions for attacking are, I don't think there's expressly a rule against a monster attacking itself, just that you have to be attacking an opponent's monster. Which at that time, it would be. There might be some ruling somewhere, but the only cards I can think of that allow for redirections of attacks related to this are Ancient Lamp and Magical Arm Shield.

No monster or effect has ever been allowed to declare an attack against itself. I think the English dub once implied Attack Guidance Armor could choose the attacking monster, but didn't actually try to do it, so it probably was just a dub thing.
