AcediaJC
So, here's an idea I had recently... From what I can tell with my limited knowledge of Yugioh, most Zombie type monsters and decks are based around the graveyard, which makes sense right? Zombies being undead and all. But isn't there more to zombies than just coming back from the dead? What about the way they turn their victims into zombies as well? And so that's where the theme of this deck lies, turning your opponent's monsters into Zombies or "Z-pocalypse Biter"s to exploit for various effects, as well as a few "Survivor" monsters that function both as one of the deck's greatest weapons, as well as a very effective counter to use if you're the one facing this set rather than using it.
ZPOC-000 Z-pocalypse Patient Zero This card cannot be normal summoned or set. This card can only be special summoned when your life points would otherwise reach 0. Remove from play all cards in your hand and graveyard, and increase your life points by 100 for each "Z-pocalypse" monster removed from play. Card art by ashivils on deviantart ZPOC-001 Zombie Apocalypse Once per turn, you may select one face-up monster on either side of the field and change its type to Zombie. If all face-up monsters on the field are Zombie type, this card cannot be destroyed by spell, trap, or monster effects. Card art by Ironshod on deviantart ZPOC-002 Z-pocalypse Biter When this card destroys another monster as a result of battle, the destroyed monster is special summoned back to your opponent's side of the field and its name is treated as "Z-pocalypse Biter". Any monster special summoned by this effect cannot attack or be attacked by Zombie type monsters. Card art by CptFurt on deviantart ZPOC-003 Z-pocalypse Shamblers This monster's ATK and DEF are equal to the number of Zombie type monsters on your side of the field x 400. If this is the only Zombie type monster on your side of the field, you may special summon one level 4 or lower Zombie from your hand. Card art by Vegas Mike on deviantart ZPOC-004 Z-pocalypse Brute If none of the monsters on your opponent's side of the field are Zombie type, this card can attack twice during your battle phase. Card art by francis001 on deviantart ZPOC-005 Z-pocalypse Blind Hunter When this monster attacks a face-down monster, flip it face up before damage calculation. If the monster's DEF is higher than this card's ATK, the target monster's name becomes treated as "Z-pocalypse Biter". Card art by DavidRapozaArt on deviantart ZPOC-006 Z-pocalypse Lurker FLIP: Take control of one "Z-pocalypse Biter" on your opponent's side of the field for 3 of your turns and halve its ATK and DEF as long as it is on your side of the field. This card's ATK and DEF are equal to half that of the destroyed monster. Card art by Brain-Damaged on deviantart ZPOC-010 Z-pocalypse Hound If your opponent declares an attack against a Zombie monster on your side of the field, you may send this card from your side of the field to the graveyard to negate the attack and change the attacking monster's name to "Z-pocalypse Biter". Card art by Zasalamell on deviantart ZPOC-011 Z-pocalypse Devourer Once per turn during your first main phase you may remove from play one "Z-pocalypse Biter" on either side of the field. This monster cannot attack on the turn its effect is activated. Card art by Davesrightmind on deviantart ZPOC-012 Zombies at the Door When your opponent sets a monster on the field, discard one "Z-pocalypse" monster from your hand to activate one of the following effects: - Destroy the face-down monster. - Flip the monster face-up and change its name to "Z-pocalypse Biter" and type to Zombie. Card art by Nith47 on deviantart ZPOC-019 Z-Virus Outbreak Discard 1 card and search your deck for one "Zombie Apocalypse" field spell, then add it to your hand. If the card sent to the graveyard was "Z-pocalypse Patient Zero", you may also search your deck for one level 3 or lower zombie type monster and add it to your hand. Card art by themeatgrinder on deviantart ZPOC-020 Growing Horde Send one level 5 or higher Zombie type monster on your side of the field to the graveyard to special summon up to two level 4 or lower "Z-pocalypse" monsters from your hand. This card cannot be activated on the same time a monster was tribute summoned. Card art by thomasthorne on deviantart ZPOC-021 Zombie Bait Activate this card when your opponent declares an attack against a "Z-pocalypse" monster on your side of the field while they control 2 or more monsters. Your opponent must choose one monster on their side of the field other than the attacking monster and send it to the graveyard, otherwise the attack is negated. Card art by AlbertoArribas on deviantart
This set is nowhere near finished yet of course, I'm just posting what I've made for it so far to get some feedback on the basic idea, so suggestions for ways to build on it are very welcome. As I said above, my knowledge of Yugioh is pretty limited so I'm not sure if this set would be over powered, under powered, or completely useless, so any advice on how to make this a balanced and worthwhile deck would also be greatly appreciated! EDIT: This set is now mostly finished. I'm still looking for feedback on any balance issues there may be and am still open to suggestions for more cards to add, but I think this is a good amount for it to be considered a full set now :)
AcediaJC
Just made a large-ish update to this set. Added 7 new cards: 3 more Z-pocalypse monsters, 3 more Survivors, and a trap. Feedback and suggestions are still hugely appreciated!
patient99
I had an idea kind of like this but it as more about infecting monsters with a zombie virus.
bosteroforever
Its quite impressive, i like this archetype a lot!
AcediaJC
Thanks for the feedback! :) I've also just added another 7 cards to the set. 4 new monsters, 2 spells, and another trap. Though one card in particular I'd really like to hear some thoughts on is the new first card in the set, Patient Zero. I'm not really sure what sort of impact a card that activates when you hit 0 lifepoints would have... I imagine with its particular effect it would only really delay your defeat by one turn in most cases, which could potentially lead to a spectacular comeback with the right amount of luck. So is my thought process on that mostly accurate, or could Patient Zero just potentially become an instant game changer any time it's used? I want it to be a last ditch effort to save yourself just long enough to claw your way back into the game, rather than something that would just be the same as turning around a chess board when your opponent checkmates you and declaring yourself the winner. Dr. Cakey
In a word, this archetype is weak. Very weak. For instance, take "Zombie Apocalypse". It's essentially an inferior version of the already-existing "Zombie World", which turns every monster on the field (and in the Graveyard) into Zombies just by being there, and also locks your opponent's Tribute Summons unless they're summoning a Zombie. Now is it very likely they're going to be tribute summoning? No, it's not, but it is something, however small - although I suppose Apocalypse's self-protection is helpful, even if it's very easily circumvented. There are a bunch of other cards that are essentially more powerful versions of what you already have. Zombie Master can revive zombies from either player's graveyard (again, works with Zombie World). Paladin of Cursed Dragon steals zombies from the opponent's graveyard. Red-Eyes Zombie Dragon takes control of zombies it destroys in battle. Natural Bone Saurus takes control of any monster it destroys and turns it into a zombie. Trap of the Imperial Tomb destroys 2 of your opponent's cards when a zombie goes from their graveyard to your field. And so on. Now these cards aren't exactly on the powerful side, either, but they're still more effective by far than what you've made. You specifically asked about Patient Zero. Patient Zero is unplayable. It has a weak effect for a staggeringly massive cost. Compare it to Battle Fader which, when you're attacked directly, ends the battle phase and special summons itself from your hand, to be used either as a resource on your turn or to soak up an attack next turn. In general, you seem to be a good five or ten years out of date on what is considered powerful, useful, or even usable in the game at the moment. AcediaJC
Hm,.. I wasn't aware most of those cards existed that accomplished the goal of this set better. I am very out of date in this stuff as you guessed. Used to be into the game during my childhood and wasn't very knowledgeable about everything in it back then either, then recently came back to it. I've been gradually trying to bring myself up to speed on the current state of the game though (Finally starting to understand Synchros/Tuners!), but seems I've still got a lot of catching up to do :p Any suggestions on how to fix the set's many problems? From the sound of it most of the cards will need a complete overhaul, so it might take awhile to get these up to current standards... Thanks for letting me know that the set's got some major flaws though. Can't learn from mistakes I didn't know I was making, after all :p
Kito
I suggest Making all your cards revolve around putting "z-counters" on enemy cards to turn them into zombie monsters, lower their defense to zero, and can't change their battle position. I suggest you read up on "alien" archetype to see how counter play can be used, just note that you have to put what the counters do on every card you have put counters on cards. Then you can make your survivors target cards with counters as opposed to these "Z-pocalypse" cards. As for some specific card changes, I suggest you make patient 0 give you 200 life points for every card removed this way, and 200 damage and place "z-counters" on all opponents monsters. Then he is litearally your last ditch effort, traps could still destroy him, spells, etc so he not that OP. And perhaps even giving him another effect that when he kills a card with a counter he can attack again. ZPOC-001 Zombie Apocalypse Once per turn, you may select one face-up monster on either side of the field and place one "Z-Counter" on it (monsters with z counters can not change their battle postion have 0 defence and are zombie type). If all face-up monsters on the field are Zombie type, this card cannot be destroyed by spell, trap, or monster effects. This way seems easier to help explain changes to card effect. This lets you set up counters, and when you have max counters your field is invunerable ZPOC-002 Z-pocalypse Biter When this card destroys another monster with a "Z-Counter" as a result of battle, search your deck for a "Z-apocalypse biter" and special summon it to the field, when this card is destroyed as a result of battle and sent to the graveyard place one "z-counter" on the monster that destroyed it (monsters with z counters can not change their battle postion have 0 defense and are zombie type). This lets this card swarm, and set up counter control, you may want to increase this cards ATK to 1600 like a better Hydrogeddon, the only reason I have Z-Counters not change battle postion and change defense to 0 is so your unusually weak monsters have a chance of killing anything, and originally "zombie" monsters had 0 defense so why not go back to basics? These are some examples as to how better reformat this deck so it's accually competitive, I don't like sycnros or XYZ cards, so I would not suggest adding those cards, but hey thats my personal preference
AcediaJC
I considered using a counter system initially for the set, but was worried that might lead to it becoming just a zombie version of the Alien archetype (Which now that I think about it, would be kinda amusing, since that uses "A-counters" and this would use "Z-counters"). Basing it around counters might be a good idea after all though... So I may do a little research on other sets that use counters (So it doesn't just end up identical to an existing archetype) and post a revised version of the set using that instead of the name changes. Thanks for the suggestion!
