Guardians of Aldaria [NS/Always Accepting/16+/Looking for a Co-Host]

Recommended Posts

This is the only world you have, and as far as you know, ever will know. What you know at this point is this: You are about to choose between your own comfort zone and sticking with the known, or leaving your family and friends behind to pick an entirely new life. What ever you've been brought up on, you can change, no matte to the circumstances. You have the opportunity to choose to change your life or let it roll on. Of course, you're not the only one. There are many others around you, most of them you've never seen before, few of them, your companions for probably the most difficult time of your life.
The land that you live in is called Aldaria, where magic flows like water to anywhere and anyone that had access to it. As far as you know, everything outside of your heavily guarded borders has been destroyed by a Great War. You have grown up in one of the many schools of magic, living around it and seeing what it can do, but never being able to learn it. Teaching a child magic is a crime punishable by death. At age 16, you must choose a school of magic to join, leaving everything you know behind for a new life. For some it's an opportunity to escape. In these schools, you will be taught to tap into your magic and use it to master one of the many schools of magic.

There is an initiation process, chosen by the school, that the kids must pass in order to enter under the protection and teaching of the school. If you fail, you will be cast out, weak and powerless. Or so they say. There is rumor that the outcast have found a new form of magic, and are plotting revenge, but the stories are mostly told around fires and under blankets.

The schools govern themselves and there is a top secret council that has representatives from each school that speaks on the welfare of all the schools and their relations. The factions are generally equal and are relatively peaceful. But there have been strange happenings, people going missing..... Some believe to be connected to the Mangiject, a mysterious being thought to be the source of magic and the schools. Whispers in the halls of the initiation dorms and hushed tones among the adults are all that are heard of him, wether it is a legitimate fear or only superstition, one thing is for sure..... Things will not stay as peaceful as they used to be.
Name: Adrienne Ebonheart
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Appearance: http://www.deviantart.com/art/Angel-Girl-II-Tears-Bled-53604058
Personality: Although she grew up with minimal human interaction, Adrienne is not exactly anti-social, more off-putting than anything. She is not so in a snotty way, or a condemns ending way, but more of a "I don't need anyone but myself". Although Adrienne acts very self-dependent, there is something inside her that aches for a friend who can actually speak to her. Something in her knows that she is attractive, and she plans to use her attractiveness to get what she needs, but she still has self respect, so nothing ridiculous. Her love of literature is prominent; she will speak in stanzas or quote novels without even realizing it. During her off time, she, of course, reads.
Growing up, Adrienne never knew her mother. She always assumed that she had died during birth or that she had left her inattentive father shortly after Adrienne was born. There is only one thing hat her father had told her about her mother. She knows that when she was born, her mother found a lone wolf pup in the forest, and left it with Adrienne. The two of them grew up with each other, for in an inseparable bond. On many occasions have they saved each other's lives, in one way or another. Adrienne's father, Cain Ebonheart, was, and still is, the representative for the Ebonial school, and was never home to raise Adrienne. So, left on her own, she raised herself. She learned to read and write at a young age from her stubborn yet careworn nanny, and instantaneously fell in love with it. She quickly began to write poems of her own, covering her walls with the dreary-but-rarely-cheerful poems. When she was about 14, her nanny began telling her stories of an all powerful wizard named Mangiject, and Adrienne became transfixed. Her nanny told her to do so only in secret, and soon after, disappeared. Instead of scaring her off, this only piqued Adrienne's interest in the man. She's assembled one of the largest databases known among the Believers of Mangi, due to her relatively unrestricted learning and access to bounties of information. With her newfound knowledge, Adrienne has begun to see clues turnip all over the place.
School of Magic: Elemental
Name: Canikin
Age: About 15 or so
Gender: Male
Personality: Canikin is relatively untrusting of anyone but Adrienne, and would die for Adrienne. He knows that she would do the same.
Appearance: Canikin is a pretty large wolf, with powerful hind legs and sharp white teeth. He is jet black, with a few large, white steaks from his neck to hind legs.
Powers: No powers besides slightly increased speed. agility, and strength.
Weapons:
Description: Yrasthor is one of weapons that Adrienne found while wondering the forest when she was about 14 years old. It's a sword about 3 feet long, with a curve at the end. It's relatively quick and is made faster by Adrienne's abilities. She can channel electricity through it to unleash powerful blasts of energy. She named it after the Nordic legend of Thor.
Appearance: http://www.deviantart.com/art/short-sword-212081142 It also has a black streak that leaves from the handle to the tip that turns electric blue when Adrienne touches it. The handle functions the same way.

Description: Rangi is a large double-sided war hammer that Adrienne swings to do heavy damage. Previously used as pole for balance practice, Adrienne will be able to user her powers to use it. Directly below the handle, there is a piece of metal that Adrienne can wedge into the ground to use it as a pole to swing around and stand on. When she slams it on the ground, Rangi releases a shockwave of air to know her opponents down. It's handle and pole is wrapped in red rope, and the head is made of a white metal with intricate designs etched into it.
Magic: Adrienne will study air to augment her agility and sneakiness, and electricity for stunning attacks , and an all out attack that chains from enemy to enemy and can kill those with little to no magic resistance. It leaves her almost powerless and defenseless. She drains energy from things around her, making her air powers accessible at all times and giving her the ability to drain arcan energy and convert it to electrical energy.

:
Name: Meredith Pence
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Appearance: Meredith has grown startlingly beautiful, which is always convenient for someone who wants others to do her bidding. She's tall, at 170 cm, and quite curvy, though she tends to downplay that with her outfits. Her hair is wavy and falls to her shoulderblades, though she often keeps it drawn out of her face in a neat ponytail. On the downside, she isn't strong at all, and has no visible muscle to speak of.
As a merchant's daughter, Meredith is on the higher end of the middle class, so she tends to dress very well for a post-calamitous society. She keeps her clothes neat and in order, and she's not incompetent at coordinating an outfit. Her cloak resembles a suit, and if she puts it together right, she's a knockout.
I hesitate to call her clothing masculine, since she tends to wear either a blouse and skirt or a dress under her cloak, but the way she puts it together with her cloak can resemble a dashing tailcoat.
Personality: Because she's one of the Dictial school's star students, and because she's been acutely aware of what people think of the Dictial school, she has an odd combination of strong charisma and horrible self-esteem. The end result is a literate, persuasive, powerful speaker, who rarely speaks except to throw sarcastic quips at people. She knows the power of words, and she's not one to waste them.
Mind you, the old stereotype of the ice queen who just needs love to thaw does hold true for poor Meredith, whose prickliness is more the product of years of rejection than actual introversion. She craves companionship – though she won't admit that even to herself – so if she happens to find the right girl for her, she'll never, ever let go.
On a more mundane level, Meredith is a bit of a neat freak, keeping her notes, her clothes, her room, her hair, etc. organized and in order. She reads and writes in her spare time, and she's always up for a long, hot bath (so long as she's on her own). She likes tea, dislikes alcohol, and has fairly gourmet tastes, disliking uncooked or unadorned foods (though luckily her appetite is small to match).

Biography: Meredith Pence has heard the rumours. She's heard what you were saying about the Dictial school in class yesterday. She's heard the Dictial jokes you were cracking on your way home. She's heard the angry rant your father launched into when you got there, especially the part where he said the whole Dictial school should be hanged.
See, Meredith is the daughter of two traders, Martin and Elizabeth Pence. So ever since her childhood, she, along with her parents, has travelled in and out of the Dictial city limits to sell people books, scrolls, and herbs both magical and culinary. But in the other schools, Dictial gets a rather chilly reception. Their success in politics and finance, combined with a few high-profile cases of corruption, have made the Dictial school a favourite scapegoat of society. “Never trust a Dictial,” they say. “Words are their slaves; they can beat them until they get what they want.” She's seen parents call their children in and scold them for playing with her; she's seen people slam their doors in her parents faces; she's seen people throw rotten fruit – and worse – just seeing her parents' livery.
Her decision to join the Dictial school wasn't really about her passion for magic – her real joy is in literature and linguistics. It wasn't really about her parents pushing her to do it, though they did, or about society pushing her to do it, though it did. It was her way of saying, to all those people who rejected her and her parents because of the colours they wore and the magic they worked, “yes, I'm in Dictial. What are you going to do about it?”
Incidentally, she's heard plenty of stories about the Mangiject in school, but she disdains the rumours. “Anyone that powerful,” she says, “would be able to think of a better name.” It would take some pretty hard evidence to convince her otherwise – for example, meeting the Mangiject in person.
School of Magic: Dictial
Familiar:
Name: Magistra
Age: 8
Gender: Female
Personality: Magistra is even more insufferable than Meredith. She can talk, and she wants everyone to know it: only Meredith's commands can make her shut up. She'll behave when Meredith really wants her to, but for the most part she's excellent at conjuring up snarky lines at the worst possible times.
Appearance: Besides perhaps a particularly wide wingspan, there's nothing to distinguish Magistra from any other corvus corax varius. It's black from head to toe, about 60 cm long, and insufferably proud of herself. Here's a picture, courtesy of Wikimedia.
Weapon: A simple, double-edged dagger. It's purely a self-defence weapon, unsuited to anything more than blocking a light sword or slashing an unarmed assailant.Magic: With an enchanting voice, great magical power, and an intimate acquaintance with the darker sides of human psychology, Meredith's magic will stop just short of mind control. She'll be able to disrupt her opponents' spells and bolster her allies in combat, but out of it is where she'll really shine: with careful diplomacy and carefully applied Dictial magic, she'll make people dance like puppets on her strings.

Name: Adell Lester

Gender: Male

Age: 16
lXEMpJE.jpg?1
Personality:
With darkness being one of the most prevalent and primordial fears amongst men, as per stereotypes, those that can control it are not looked at in a positive light. With manipulation over such an omnipresent force, people tend to try and shy away from those with that kind of power. And so, Adell has learned to cope with the fearful and dejecting glances he's received throughout most of his life. While his parents had learned to accept it and act as though they were catering to those that feared the ebonial, Adell didn't feel as though their sort of magic was anything to be feared more than any other school. But, seeing as these feelings of curiosity had literally been against the law to satiate, he had instead given up and simply sat back. The thought then dawned on him that all secrets of magic, even once you were of age, were most likely concealed. And so his dream ended there. He soon became the lethargic self he is now, and simply started to become apathetic towards everything in order to deal with both the ebonial's and other school's expectations and presumptions of him as a person based on the equivalent of race. However, as he learned of the Mangiject, he figured that if he could learn more about this mysterious being, he could be that much closer to learning the secrets of ebonial magic.
Being born into this world that wasn't interested in him and feared the heritage he belonged to, Adell had been doomed to lethargy from the start. His parents were those that were fine practitioners of their arts, though were always never pleased with the lack of enthusiasm he showed towards anything. As such, if they gave him a task to do on that required him to get up and interact with those within the city, they would kick him out of the house until he had finished his assigned task. Unfortunately, due to his own lethargy, these tasks actually took days longer than they should have to complete, and so he often wandered the streets while homeless. It wasn't until one fateful encounter seemed to change the boy's work ethic.

Walking through the town as he normally had, his ears eventually picked up some kind of whimpering. Following the sound, he found that it belonged to an odd who seemed to be on its last legs and needed immediate attention. While continuing to keep his usual demeanor about him, Adell had successfully and almost instantly assisted the fox in its recovery process. While he had intended to leave the fox alone afterwards, it continued to follow him, and acting as his faithful companion, Adell named the fox Ashe, after its black fur.

With his new found companion by his side, Adell started to become more attentive to the world around him, and while still being lazy, managed to do whatever was required of him in a much faster way. As he became more attentive, though, he started to wonder about people's fear. Not caring so much about how people feared him, but more so interested in whether or not there was a fundamental difference in Ebonial versus every other magic type that made them have this fear. While he realized that studying magic like everyone else would lead nowhere in this pursuit, if he were to find out more about this rumored Mangiject, then perhaps he could unlock the secrets behind magic that had lay hidden from most of the world. And so, from then on, Adell simply had to bide his time until he could pursue his first real goal in life.
School of Magic: Ebonial
Name: Ashe
Species: Black Fox
3uNg8jV.jpg?1
Personality: A loyal companion to Adell, who tries to alert and awaken him when things are actually happening. Though usually acts just as lazy as his master.
Weapon: He's an unarmed fighter, though wears metal shin guards and metal fingerless gloves to help him use his hands to actually block things instead of just being lacerated...also getting hit by metal hurts.

Magic: Shadow Walking. The ability to simply melt into shadows and casually walk within them. Ultimately, the power is going to be at the extent where he can travel through them at near instantaneous speeds, in addition to using shadows to make a double of himself and or someone else.

I am in this. I am in this so hard.

Reserve.

Edit: Well, here it is so far.
Name: Edward St. Louis
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Edward has been known as a strikingly handsome young man. He stands at approximately 188 cm, his skin has been described as "White as the snow" although that is a slight exaggeration. His hair remains short, unstyled and flat on his head and is a dark brown that is commonly mistaken for black. His eyes are a dark hazel colour, they have been described as sharp and to have the ability to "Pierce the soul and see through people" despite not being in any school of magic remotely related to that. His body is well-toned from years of personal training in his spare time. He commonly clothes himself in an old but well-kept black cloak, it's skin-tight on the arms and shows his family's Code of Arms on the left side of the breast. The back falls just above his heels and the front is just above his knees. Underneath the cloak he commonly wears either fine tailored clothes or mesh armour, depending on the situation. (Both, however leave his muscular form unseen and his physical prowess unknown.) While wearing the mesh armour without the cloak, the Code of Arms can be found once again on his back; albeit larger than on the cloak. His family's Code of Arms is a dragon coiling itself around a sword with the base of the hilt holding an orb with the dragon grasping it with its front paws, the back grasping the blade itself. Its wings spread far, covering most of the top half of the symbol.
Personality:
Biography:
School of Magic: Elemental
(Not 100% sure if a dragon is allowed, but I'm going for it anyway)
Name: Novex
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Appearance: Novex is a pitch-black dragon roughly the size of an adult falcon (excluding his tail) with a much larger wingspan. Nothing is remotely special about his appearance, except his blood-red eyes and his wings are bat-like. His tail is approximately 1 m in length and he tends to coil it around the same arm as the shoulder he is perched on. His tail is also spiked, shaped much like a blade. His talons are retractable, much like a feline's. His teeth, claws, and spikes on his tail are all frost-white and razor sharp.
Bio: Novex is part of one of the last families of dragons. This family has had an incredible bond to the St. Louis family, and therefore they have always been familiars to them. Not quite as inferiors, for the most part, but more as friends and equals. Novex was appointed as Edward's familiar at the moment he hatched; which was the same day as Edward was born. The two have been inseparable ever since.
Personality: Novex is an incredibly stubborn creature. The only human beings he can trust are Edward and anyone Edward is close to. He is not one to speak unless spoken to, unless of course it is to Edward (or any other human he's come to trust.) With them, he isn't afraid to speak his mind. The only other case he's known to speak is when he is annoyed; in which case he will, as he says it, "Scare them into oblivion."
Abilities: Elemental breath: Novex has the ability to breathe the same two that Edward studies: Ice and fire. If he is perched on the hilt of Dualité, it gains the same properties as Edward is currently using.

A weapon passed down through his family for generations, Dualité is an exact replica of the sword found in the St. Louis Code of Arms. The orb found at the base of the hilt is made of a rare magical substance. It is capable of amplifying either the range of magic used by 20% or the power by 5% and glows the colour of the type of Elemental Magic being used. While the power amplifier is being used, the orb glows a darker colour, and brighter while using the range amplifier. While not in use, the orb remains a neutral green. Dualité is casually sheathed on Edward's right hip. It can only be used by one person, and the owner must be reinstated once per year. The owner is decided by the first person to allow the orb to absorb the two types of Elemental Magic the owner wishes to use, and for the next year only those two types can be used with the orb. Anyone else who touches the weapon without the owner's permission will suffer an injury based on the orb's current elements. (In this case, fire and ice. Burn or frostbite.) If there is no owner decided, the sword is just a normal weapon.

Edward displays basic control over the elements of fire and ice. He is capable of creating both of these elements just by the thought of it. He also displays the advanced ability to create them from a distance, his limit being approximately 10 m. The weather also affects his abilities. While the sun is out and/or there is a drought, his abilities with fire are noticeably amplified. The same applies to ice while the moon is out and/or while it is snowing. Note that the effects of Dualité and the weather cannot stack. Depending on which he is using, Edward's blood becomes incredibly flammable or freezing to the touch. Note that also he cannot use both at the same time, and must wait approximately 30 seconds before he can switch.
He has shown to have his own unique style with fire, using it more as an offensive magic, but it also has its defensive purposes. There are different strengths of fire, and it can be measured by the colours of the flames. In order from weakest to strongest, orange-red-blue-white-black. The strongest Edward has been shown to use is blue. Black flames can only be extinguished by the user or another, stronger, fire user. The longest time that black flames have ever been used in history at a single time is 30 seconds. The only exception to which is the ability Inferno. Abilities he knows are as follows:
Fireball: Self-explanatory. This is one of the abilities that Edward is capable of using at a distance, and can therefore make it seem as if objects are lighting on fire without being near a source. The largest size of a fireball without the amplifying effects of Dualité or the weather is roughly the size of a baseball. While under the influence of either one, it becomes closer to the size of a larger human hand. Humans cannot be lit on fire from a distance, but the fireball can be launched from a distance.
Flamethrower: Self-explanatory. This ability cannot be used at a distance, but from either the mouth or the use of both hands. From the mouth it is more powerful.
Inferno: Literally a suicide move. Edward ignites his blood while it is still in his body, and the pressure begins to build as his internal organs begin to ignite too. Eventually his whole body explodes, the flames igniting everything that crosses their path for approximately one hour unless put out. The flames are black.
Smoke: A concealing or blinding tactic. This can be used in the form of Fireball or Flamethrower, the Fireball version used more as a blinding tactic and it lasts for a shorter time, as well as being smaller.
Sparks: A blinding tactic, only usable in the form of Fireball. The fireball explodes, creating blinding sparks that makes the affected's field of vision completely white. The blinding lasts for approximately 30 seconds. Edward has to be careful when he does this, as if he's too close he can be blinded too.

Much like fire, Edward has his own unique style of ice. Ice is more of a mixed element, capable of both offense and defense. The offense is more suited for precision, while the defense is solid. The ice can only be melted by a fire user or by the will of the user. Abilities he knows are as follows:
Icicle Shards: Self-explanatory. This is one of the abilities that Edward can use at a distance. While under the influence of either the weather or Dualité the icicles become sharper and more solid.
Ice Armour: Starting at his feet, Edward's body becomes encased in protective ice. This offers protection on par with standard heavy armour and mobility is severely limited.
Ice Sword: In the event that Edward doesn't have Dualité, he can create a sword from pure ice. It offers the same damage and weight as Dualité without the magical effects.
Ice Plates: Self-explanatory. Edward is capable of creating ice plates ranging from the size of a dining plate to a regular-sized door. They have absolutely no offensive purposes.
Ice Age: Much like Inferno, this is a suicide move. Edward freezes the blood in his own body, and it slowly encases his internal organs as well until it rips his body apart, encasing everything else in ice as well. It lasts for about an hour as well.

For some reason it won't let me organize the appearance without putting only the first paragraph into a spoiler alone, so I had to put it all together for now until I figure out why that is.

Ah, what the hell. I'm a sucker for magic school stories, and if I don't roleplay in something soon I think my head will explode. I do have a couple questions, though:

 1. You referenced Thor and Norse legend in your character's app. May I take that to mean that Aldaria is actually a post-calamitous Earth? If so, where on Earth are we? (I assume western Europe, probably England or northern France, based on the language and mythology that's been referenced so far, but...) If not, how do you get mythologies to reference?
 2. How exactly do the schools function as political entities? Are they like separate countries, or is there some unifying government tying them all together? Are they geographically separate, with their own cities, or are they all part of one big city? About how many people are in each school? How much interaction is there among the schools? Do they trade with each other? (I ask because I'd like to know, for example, what my character's parents did for a living.)
 3. What level of education is a character expected to have going into the magic school? (I expect there's some, or it'd be hard to get a literature geek - and the probability that I'll also want to make a literature geek is basically one.) What kind of non-magic education does the magic school provide, and what other educational options would there be besides the magic school? I ask because I want to know why my character would have chosen to go to the magic school and not somewhere else.
 4. Tech level? Sorry if you put this in your first post; I must have missed it.

With all due respect,

Ah, what the hell. I'm a sucker for magic school stories, and if I don't roleplay in something soon I think my head will explode. I do have a couple questions, though:

 • You referenced Thor and Norse legend in your character's app. May I take that to mean that Aldaria is actually a post-calamitous Earth? If so, where on Earth are we? (I assume western Europe, probably England or northern France, based on the language and mythology that's been referenced so far, but...) If not, how do you get mythologies to reference?

1.
Basically, this is the plot. Way back when, a super strong wizard managed to collide universes open universes together. (I.E. Asgard, Earth, etc.). When they collided, they brought everything from their world with them. The humans, being one of the my intelligent beings that collided, founded a small country that flew under the radar. Quickly war broke out. In th end, everyone who fought in the war died. But, the small country managed to stay untouched. The resident wizards formed a group of the surviving wizards together. They decided that 1.) No wizard that powerful should ever exist again and that 2.) The surviving city would be used to slowly recreate the race that they were. That's how we have elements of earth.
2. They are all seperate, small cities. Imagine (if you live in a relatively populated area) the closest city to you. That's about heir vicinity. Once you choose a school, you cannot leave the premises, and the schools are self sustaining. The exception to this rule is of course the council. They conduct any types of political conversation necessary. (Like the United Nations, but with less country interaction, and more secrecy. The other exception is those who work in the trade sectors of their cities. The cities trade their "specialized product", or products that are produced easily with their powers.
3. Education is up to you. More than basic literacy is not necessary, as you don't exactly have to use the Pythagorean theorem to light shit on fire. My character was intelligent because she recieved personal tutoring
4. Medieval, though if there is a solid reason for higher level technology, then go for it, but don't always expect it to go through.

Oof, very well. I'll simply assume that I'm safe referencing terrestrial mythology and preserve the plot for myself. ^^;; I'll draw up an app tomorrow, probably; for the moment, consider this a reserve. Thanks for answering my questions~

EDIT: ...actually, it occurs to me. How would people in different schools of magic interact in the roleplay? With so many schools, if people are distributed evenly, wouldn't there be really little interaction? I ask because I'd like to play an LG Dictial characer, but if the players of different schools won't interact then there wouldn't be much point to not playing an Elemental character.

Basically, here's what will happen. Note, some sort of refrence to Mangiject d should exist in your App. What is going to happen is we are going to get kidnapped by a small "rebel group" who will protect us from those who are trying to eliminate people who know about
The Mangiject, then sent back to our schools. We will go through initiation at our schools, and interaction depends on how much the characters want to. Basically, there will be a hub about 15-30 minutes out from all the cities city underground that we can meet at.

Note 2: those who apply first to a certain school have the right to create a full character or NPC for their schools council member.

Mine application:

It's purely a self-defence weapon, unsuited to anything more than blocking a light sword or slashing an unarmed assailant.
Magic: With an enchanting voice, great magical power, and an intimate acquaintance with the darker sides of human psychology, Meredith's magic will stop just short of mind control. She'll be able to disrupt her opponents' spells and bolster her allies in combat, but out of it is where she'll really shine: with careful diplomacy and carefully applied Dictial magic, she'll make people dance like puppets on her strings.

Radish was the word, right? No, turnip. Turnip. Yes. That was it. Turnip. I'm terrible at these things.
Two things
1.) Read the rules real quick again, I think you forgot something.
2.) I'm assuming your character is a lesbian.. Am I correct?

Welcome to YCM! It looks all right, but I would like to ask a few things:

Most of your Bio is more about why he chose the school instead of his life, which is what the Biography is. (If youre a first time Rper). I think put your bio into the personality, then right about his life. How were his parents? Did he have siblings? Was there any tragedy in his life?
