The Nim Rod

Trebuchet MS

Recommended Posts

[Continuous Spell]

When this card is activated: Place 15 Nim Counters on this card. During each End Phase, the turn player must remove 1 to 3 Nim Counters from this card. When the last Nim Counter is removed from this card: Inflict 4000 damage to the player who removed that last counter, also send this card to the Graveyard.

Basically, adding a minigame of Nim into the card game, with devastating results. Person to remove the last counter loses the minigame so that you cannot cheat using Counter Cleaner. Naturally, if either player is on the verge of losing the minigame, they're free to take this card off the field.

Variations to consider:

  • Have this card use Spell Counters instead of Nim Counters to add another layer of interaction with various other cards.
  • Changing damage to life loss to prevent cheesing the loss of the minigame.
  • Tweaking the degree of damage or changing the penalty for losing the minigame.

Now with image. See it here, and direct further commentary to that thread too.

No, gain Life points.

4000 LP is nice to have, but you can't won just by getting more and more LP (short of decking out the other guy after getting some kind of infinte LP Loop). 4000 LP Is half of what you start with, and 1 good battle phase after that away from victory.

I object that this is not proper Nim because there's only one heap, and also that this type of card is impossible to balance with any effect because of the possibility that the minigame is mathematically solvable.

Does anyone with math skills know if expanding the options (for example, by starting the counters at 120 and removing 6-18 per turn) makes the game implausible to solve mathematically, or if the same solutions apply, or neither?

To balance this post's cryptic dryness, have Tutter. 250px-Tutter-pumpkin.jpg
