Kyng
http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/jul/15/thor-is-a-woman-in-new-marvel-comicbook-series This is not Thorella. This is Thor. Apparently in this canon, Thor is less of a character, more of a title. Do you think it is a good move? Or not?
.Rai
Inevitably, it will all be retconned. It's fine. If an alien can wield Mjolner, so can a human female. It's fairly reasonable to suggest that they're also pandering to a predominantly male straight audience, and also riding the neo-feminism wave, but that's okay. Actions matter, not motives, in this particular case. Probably.
PrimeAceJohn
I mean it's a good edition to the Thor family (if you consider it a family). I'm always one for a strong female lead role. The whole Thor name stuff still confuses me. I think all of which we know now still won't convince us. I'm also confused whether it's a whole 'what-if' gender-bend kinda' thing, or if it's just some other wielder (like Beta Ray, Dargo, or Thunder Strike). However, I really hope it is a whole nother wielder-thing so it can provide a background story, history of a new character, etc. Cuz let's face it, I think out of all the main avengers, the background behind Thor isn't really too big for me. Then again I'm big on Norse Mythology and already knew everything about him. Still I think what Marvel's really trying to do is create a Wonder Woman without going through a long process of convincing us to like her - as if Black Widow isn't that much of a bad ass already. I kinda' like the idea with a strong female hero, but confused on a lot of points. I'll just have to see more of this character.
LordCowCowCowCowCowCowCowCow
I don't mind it, but I worry it's just Marvel trying to look good to the public. We'll see what they do with it. I mean, at first I was like "Wait, Thor is a God, why not just make a Norse Goddess into a character". Which I still think would work. But then I remembered, in the comics, Thor is whoever wields the hammer. (I wonder how they'd explain this in the movies, where Thor is just Thor.) Tentacruel
If in the comics Thor is whoever wields the hammer then this really does work 100% in terms of canon. It's funny though, if this had happened 30 years ago, I feel like people would make less of a deal out of it. Anyway. I don't really care about or follow American comics, but all that matters is that she's a good character and she's used well in good stories. Sometimes it's best to just let thing happen as they may. Goose
I was hoping the real Thor was trangendered. This is less progressive and mroe offensive
Mr.Robot
And Sam Wilson(Falcon) will take the mantle of Captain America. Knowing Marvel, this will all revert back to the original status quo when either Avengers 2, Captain America 3 or Thor 3 comes out.
Just Crouton
Well, this is from being as weird as DC's decision to turn Nightwing into Secret Agent Dick. Hopefully, they go for more strong female and less titillating the teenage male demographic with this.
Agro
tbh, I keep reading this topic title as "Thar is a female character"
Fusion X. Denver
I'm actually not positive on whether Steve Rogers will go back to being Cap or not. Marvel's never really had legacies the way DC does and passing the shield to Sam Wilson would honestly be the best place to start doing that. And in Captain America 3, they could have Steve retire the name of Captain America and let Sam take up the shield for the next trilogy (if Marvel's movie success can go on that long). As for Thor, I'm fine with the change. The thing is, the Thor we all know isn't going away, he just isn't using Mjolnir at the moment. It's not like Superior Spider-Man where Peter Parker was just gone for over a year, so we can see a new story about Thor struggling with not being himself. But I'm pretty sure Thor's status quo will revert within a couple years. Maybe Cap's too.
Admiral Tim
Don't take me wrong, I'm not against woman or empowering women or having strong female leads/heroines. However Thor is such an iconic hero, he's part of many people's childhood and memories. To change such strong image seems lazy and dumb. If they want a female superhero Marvel can easily create a new character and put in money and time to develop her. Changing Thor's gender is like changing a political figure's gender. That's like erasing textbooks and making Gandhi female. Changing such an iconic figure annoys me, not so much the female part but any changes whatsoever, especially drastic ones such as this. Your opinion doesn't make you sexist or anything, but I would disagree. I don't see this as actually changing Thor the person's gender, but having a female take on the mantle and position of Thor for this iteration. I don't see it as being the same as making Gandhi female.
Agro
If you think changing who a comic book character is is a travesty, well... you clearly either don't know or don't care for how comic book characters function.
LordCowCowCowCowCowCowCowCow
Gotta agree with Agro here. You may say that "Thor is an iconic character" but the truth about comic books, is that they CONSTANTLY change things. There are so many different versions of every character practically. There is a frog Thor. His name is Throg. I'm pretty sure making Thor female is a much easier step than making him a frog.
Tentacruel
Yeah, that's kind of why I don't like American comics. It's just a mess. A massive, convoluted mess. I feel like the best thing that could happen for American comics is for Marvel and DC to both disappear.
