Now, if you didn't understand that, here's version 2.

1. On the bottom layer (You know, the one called background that's locked?) set your foreground color to black and use the fill bucket, so it's all black.

2. On a new layer, set your foreground color to white, and brush in desired amount, but not too much, and don't use the same brush over and over unless it's a "scattering/procedural" brush.

3. On a new layer, set the foreground color to black, and brush again in desired amount, but not too much, and don't use the same brush over and over unless it's a "scattering/procedural" brush.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have an appealing base with good balance and flow that isn't too harsh. (PROTIP: Try playing with opacities and layer settings. e.g., a Soft Light layer on 75% opacity.)

5. When it looks appealing and such, make a new layer, and apply the image. (Image -> Apply Image...)

6. Use color balance with Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights to obtain the desired color scheme. (Image -> Adjustments -> Color Balance... OR Control+B)

7. Use the blur and sharpen filters/tools where and if needed, to fine tune it.

8. Congratulations, you should have a moderately appealing background, and the knowledge of how to use some tricks to do your own.

You're welcome. (This means you, OldMaster.)
