Job References and Letters of Recommendation

Agro

Recommended Posts

I need to ask my professors to see if I can get one or two for job recommendations on my resume and see if any of them would be willing to write letters of recommendation form me... and I don't know how to go about asking or who I should choose to do it. Also I'm just nervous in general 8D

So... any thoughts? D:

This may be obvious, but preferably look for professors you have worked with in projects or professional/academic practices, or otherwise know you well enough to not only have an opinion of you, but also a positive one (that is, not a neutral/indifferent opinion, or worse, a negative opinion). Also, it should be better to, if possible, meet and ask them in person because through email, phone, etc. they may not give you enough attention. And when you do, it really shouldn't be more complicated than simply asking politely "may I please get a letter of recommendation from you for X or Y purpose?" or something among those lines; the worst that can happen is that he/she will reject the request for whatever reason (too busy, etc.) but that shouldn't be much of a big deal so there is nothing to worry about (unless the professor in question is known for having a bad temper or not being supportive towards students in general, and such questions may bother or upset him/her; in that case, best to not ask him/her at all).

What if I don't think I have any of this :'D

Ah, I see the main issue now. In that case, I guess you could look for the professors from the classes/subjects where you got your best grades, or did your best works, etc. They should know, or at least remember, that you are a good student and from there they may be able to write something for you, even if you don't know each other too well. I think some professors even have their own generic letters, so speak, to give to their students, and they just edit information like the student's name, major, etc. so they don't have to write letters from scratch, nor write custom letters for each student; this in a way should make things easier for you.
